Fitting a square peg into a round whole

Well, not quite but....

I have a 19inch rack mounted DMX controller in my main playout flightcase, but want to replace the DMC controller with something different. The problem is that the new item is a little under 13 inches wide (and my flightcase is 19" wide). How do I fit it into my flightcase? At first glance I though (for a stop gap temporary measure) it would be as easy as buying a shallow 19" empty housing to fit in the space the old dmx controller left. So I could sit the new controller in it, and still have a little space at the other side for bits and bobs like song requests etc. I would have been as well looking for hens teeth online.

Are there any solutions out there?

I've seen rackmount kits that are just a bare frame with holes in so you can bolt in anything you want up to 19". In fact, I'm sure that's how a radio mic receiver was set up in an old case I sometimes used to use when I was subbing for someone else.

Thinking about it, would they not be rack rails? Put two 19" rack rails in horizontally then some smaller ones (1U, 2U, etc.) then fix rackmount ears to your controller and bolt it in.

You didn't say how many "U" the space will be but if it's a simple shelf solution you want your options may be something like this 4U shelf:
