Mobile Disco - unload and set up in 5 minutes???

Hi all,

Just thought I would share a good joke, or rather it now seems like a joke. I had a call from a potential client yesterday, wanting to book us for a disco, in a popular venue in Leeds.

We sent the booking form etc., and asked for the booking fee, as usual. Today they called back, saying, we noticed in your booking terms that you require up to an hour to set up and about the same to take down.

The client wanted, or rather expected us to be able to uload the van, take the gear in and set it up within 5 minutes. Have you ever heard the like to it before. Some people just dont understand.

We said if you want someone who can do that, then get a DJ with their own (carry on the shoulder) getto blaster and discs and sit back and not like the poor/bad sound etc., etc.

We turned down the gig as you might expect.

I've always wanted a "go go gadget" disco where I can press a button and the disco miraculously folds out and set's itself up in a matter of seconds.

Seriously guys/gals. Have you ever come across this problem. Must admit I haven't. Commen sense tells everyone that you cant do it. It would take 5 minutes, just to get parked correctly to offload etc.

Its a shame we cant educate the public about this basic need. Do we cover this in our general info for clients/venue propriators?

I am thinking of including set up and take down times before and after the gig in my contract, got caught out earlier in the year when the Hall was being locked up and all my kit was whisked outside by the party guests and left in a big pile---luckily nothing got damaged and it didnt RAIN::eek:

i get this all the time .. how long will it take you to set up? about 15 mins? think one or 2 have seen discos with a t bar with a couple of effects on it (not calling at all those of you who have that) but in that case set up time is drastically reduced my sisters wedding was a guy with a t bar with 5 twister 4s on it all pre wired and attached which were obviously just chucked back in the van at the end him and his lady friend just plonked it on a stand

wheeled in the huge wheeled flightcase with the sound system in 2 stands and 2 speakers. job done 20 mins.

of course the other problem is takedown when you have to be out of the building BY midnight ...... can we finish at 11.45 please .....erm....

I'm not sure why you ended up turning it down. I mean, they're not going to find anyone else who can setup in 5 mins. When i get asked about setup times I just tell them it depends on the size of the room and how much equipment is needed / wanted.

I can have a small rig (2 tops, 2 bins 6 lights on a deckstand) up in about 30mins. Music playing in 10, lights in 20 and tidying and any troubleshooting in the last 10. This is all provided the access to the venue is simple enough, although i'll always check this beforehand and arrive earlier if needed.

You can't do that if the wedding breakfast is in the same room as the evening reception though. Most of the time i'm usually left with a window of about 30mins to setup, whilst the venue staff change the room round.

Hey guys/gals,

Can stop laughing, the one about the bouncy castle was great, and the picture of the drums.

To add to the bouncy castle bit, perhaps, we could include say half a dozen squeaks, you know like in dog toys, but having different tones, which go off everytime someone bounces on them. I would call it the ASBO attractor, or the Mobile Bouncy Disco.

Often get "Oh, I didn't realise it would take so long" - but it's usually for kids parties when they book the hall for 2 1/2 hours and expect a set up, 2 hour disco, and take down in that time!

Mind you.... I had a questionnaire back from a customer yesterday and, although they gave us top marks, would recommend us, fantastic etc.... in answer to the question 'Is there anything we could do to improve our service?' they answered "Yes - cut down the amount of time you take to set up"!!!!!

On this particular job, they were running late, Steve had to wait around at the venue for the best part of 4 hours before he could get in. He had some music on within around 15-20 minutes and had everything rigged and had changed clothes ready for full steam ahead within 45 mins!!!!! :eek: WHAT DO THEY WANT!!!!!!

How about this one:rolleyes: You make a vidio of your disco, just bring a big screen and projector, and play. Can be set up in say 10 mins. lol.

A security guard who was going to allow me 20 mins to set up the PA (which was quite a few floors up) and then said if I hadn't moved my car from the loading bay he would have it towed.

I did tell him where to go and then he told me access was "denied":eek:

I wouldn't mind, but during this 4 hour wait I had trolleyed everything round to outside the fire exit that I had for access & set up my stand. (shame Ian hadn't lent me the ultimax wheels at this point or I could've set up the sound system outside & just hung the lights & put the speaker stands up once inside, now that would've been a quick turnaround) As it was I only tok the same time as the hotel staff took to sort the room out!

Some of the Gaelic Athletic Clubs here in Belfast don't open until 7.30pm during the week and the keyholders always turn up late. That doesn't help when the punters have 8pm start on the tickets and it's a surprise party.:( .

So what I have to do is set up the night before. Bloody nuisance.

Most other gigs I do what what groovy-nites does. I collect gear next day. Nothing worse than wading through 100+ drunks with a ton of gear and having to watch gear in boot of car at same time.
