Hi Everyone,
I've not done DJing in years after falling out with the Youth Centre Manager at the centre I used to work at about 5 year ago. I really miss it and a local pub landlord has asked me if I'd be interested in helping her setup her own equipment in the pub and then do a karaoke night on Fridays.
We now have all the sound equipment sorted so we are now wanting to look at some lighting. I've not kept up-to-date with equipment so I have no idea whats good to start out with that isn't going to break the bank. Obviously we want LED as is the future, but what would everyone suggest?

If it's just for Karaoke, you wouldn't need anything major. Maybe a Chauvet 4-Bar (https://www.djkit.com/chauvet/chauvet-4bar-dmx-led-wash-light-system.html?cat=282).

Yes it is mainly just Karaoke but with abit of music playing while singers change. I just think lighting is a great way for people to see from the outside that something is going on

Par cans like the Chauvet 4-Bar or the Kam Power Party Bar will be more than enough for that. No point getting effects lights.

Add me to the suggestions above. Some form of Powerbar or equivalent. You can have static, slow fade, or sound to light. All you need really. If you want icing on tha cake, for not a vast sum of money, you could add a cluster laser.

A cluster laser, or even a revo type dotty effect. Much as I hate them they're a cheap way of filling a room with light. But then, so are PAR bars.
Tell you what won't break the bank... a couple of these:

Bought my son one for Christmas & tried it out at a gig last week for giggles.. it's actually pretty good! Output & throw is impressive, never mind considering it was less than £15! Cheaper if you don't buy one with DMX of course but linking two lights is dead easy & makes for a symmetrical show. If you're only pottering about they'd not be a bad buy IMHO. I'm going to buy another 2 to light up my facade screen sometimes.

I use a Powerbar on the ceiling, and angle one of the pars down on the singer if possible.

Benny, we obviously disagree on the subject of these lasers. For the price some of them sell at, I can't think of any effect light to touch them.
Juski, well you're trying hard to produce even better value, aren't you? :) I don't think it's the answer, though.
Chris, well I'd disagree about the Gigbar. I'm a big fan of them, but in this case, I suspect they'd get more mileage from a powerbar type unit.

I don't like them either - I think they are old hat now.

I don't particularly like them myself, BUT they are still getting chosen by customers on over 50% of lighting hires, they're by far the most popular effect after the Tri LED and GigaBAR bars, the 18 x 3W LED UV bars are also well up the list and probably go out on around 25% of hires.

Not as old of a cross bar full of effects going batcrap crazy s2l all at once though ;-)
I absolutely love my Gigabar to bits. I might buy another one if this Thomann order doesn't come in soon (long story).

There's a bit of a theme in the above photo. I didn't ask for the pink uplighting but I thought "sod it, go with the flow".

Having just bought 2 more KAM POWERBARS im with Peter and Darren here.
Using inbuilt effects or even DMX would impress further.
TBH some of the effects suggested are Maplins style--which is all well and good but really doesnt do it for me.
Peter are you going to recommend the German POWERBARS :D which seem to be very powerful and reasonable in price?

I won't be recommending Thomann for anything after my last experience with them. Or more accurately, ParcelFarce. Somebody at the depot really likes kicking boxes to within an inch of their life. Everything I've ever had from there has arrived damaged in some way externally & they don't seem to offer a shipping upgrade.
I've got a Stairville PAR bar kit coming. It better be good or it's going back & I'll buy a gigabar from my local outlet instead. I already wish I'd done that in the first place.

Not that I posses one anymore but I think the cluster laser can work well. With atmosphere and without any other lights on ... they can look very good :)

Might do.

Parcel Farce, a plague on all their houses!
Thomann allege that good old UPS will be the couriers, but the Red Devils always attempt to bring things. I am currently in discussion with Thomann over one trifling matter which ought to have been done and dusted a month ago, and a repair which could be sorted easily of they could only source the required circuit board. Thus, I've got to admit their customer service isn't as brilliant as it apparently used to be.

Worth noting that won't pass a PAT test - there's insulation around the earth pin of the plug.

Not on the one I got. All fine here. I can't help but wonder what the difference is between an ADJ Jellydome & one of these. Onboard IEC connector maybe, and little else? I've had a look inside mine & it's really not all that bad.

Only two differences I can see.... RGB vs RGBW on the Jellydome and one clear plastic cover with lens segments vs a translucent cover with individual lenses on the Jellydome.

Yeah.. the projected light isn't pin-sharp with the cheap little thing but hey - it was £12. It's scandalous really. For projecting onto a lycra facade it's ideal IMHO.

Yeah, it creates a different type of effect, but for the money no-one is going to complain :D

Just spotted this thread. I do a few local village "Strictly Come Dancing " evenings in our village hall. iI have a couple of them I agree for the money they are ideal for the ballroom dances. Not for Latin American though!

A different approach if I may..... I recently got into rental of DJ rigs, got a second rig already built and having some success on renting it - this one uses passive speakers (Peavey Subs, Cerwin Vega Tops and a couple of Ecler/C Audio amps + Crossover I repaired or got second hand which give around 1.7KW RMS output and sound very nice), it has a 6ft over head bar and uses two Old school Martin Ego lights to hit the far end of the room, two Triclops to give some 'movement' and a KAM Ultracluster laser plus another laser mounted in the centre. A 3ft DJ booth I built for myself and a £50 LED star cloth from ebay. As an option you can have two Lanta Neptune Tumblers on top of the speakers. Cost me under £1000 to put the whole rig together inc the Tumbers (some new stuff, but mostly stuff i repaired)
It looks like this (without the tumbers and star cloth)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFDb-itMa5I
My other thought, and what is going onto my own next rental rig together with a 2ft micron booth, mixer, plus a couple of FBT X-Lite 12A active speakers and a KAM Ultra Cluster laser............ is the Acme Dynamic series (2 barrel rollers, 2 scanners, two 'moonflowers') and costs about £1000 quid for the lighting, and it all works seemlessly together without messing about with DMX and personally I thought as a good solution for small/medium venues such as a pubs and especially for rental
The Acme Dynamic setup (six lights) looks like this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCBRHz5axo4
Cost of this full setup with the Booth, Mixer, FBTs and laser/lights is a bit shy of £2000 - all new kit
But then maybe I think of these things differently that others ;)
