I want to promote a decent "your name in lights" type of service and have spent all night weighing up the pros and cons of traditional GOBO lights and modern projectors. I am very confused as to what road to take?
Here is what i have found and am looking at:
Chauvet 75 watt gobo projector (http://lighthouseaudiovisual.co.uk/chauvet-lfs-75dmx-spot-light-gobo-projector-46664-p.asp?gclid=Cj0KEQiA4LCyBRCY0N7Oy-mSgNIBEiQAyg39tsbkAVr8EZTUrsU8bLaGbQPg5hkGjqt2vjDq HtCnAJoaAgVa8P8HAQ)
£400
8,710 lux @ 2m
Zoom Angle: 14° - 22°
perhaps up to 20-30 metre effective throw?
Or
HD projector
Approx £1500
15,000:1 contrast ratio
5-8000 lumens
15 meter throw
The toss up is what to choose. The gobo projector is cheaper, brighter but requires printing at a cost of £40-50 per gobo. It also throws further and is cheaper. The projector on the other hand costs nothing for gobos and you can get the client to choose on a range of styles and colours, which adds unique service and value for money. you can also include interactive gobs (butterflies flying over there name etc). It does however cost 5 times more and may need a laptop to operate. The throw and brightness is also considerably less, but it can also be used for image projection, speeches, and home cinema.
My guess is that i can charge more for the projector. I am considering getting a super bright one from Alibaba and if it does not work well then i can at least sell it for my money back. if I sell this at £100 it will take 20 events to make the money back for projector and 9 for the gobo light.
I am not sure tbh which the best option is.

Thanks for the inundation of advice on this (inserts sarcastic smiley).
I ended up buying one of these (http://uk.hardware.info/productinfo/204944/optoma-eh501) as they come very highly recommended:

Looking forward to doing my first interactive monograms.

See? If you'd have waited, I'd have saved you tons of cash.

I would be mostly concerned on the short throw distance, how you are gonna mount it in a portable way without blocking part of the projected image, and what surface you are gonna project it on to......... but good luck and I would be interested to see the results :)

Wow. A £1500 projector vs £400 gobo fixture. Mind, you won't have to pay £40+ per custom gobo & all you need do is slap a new image together. And there won't have to be any gaps in the logotype or text. This'll probably work out cheaper in the long run if you do a lot of gobo/monogram business.

Our colleagues yonder side of t'Atlantic are dead keen on their monograms and I've seen some really good ones. All of them over there are using projectors as opposed to gobo projectors as they are more versatile and, as has been said, you can create your own images quite quickly and easily. But the biggest thing at the moment is "image mapping" and I've seen some stunning videos of Stateside operators who are offering this service. It's something, if I was full-time, I'd be looking at offering. Being only part-time, I don't have the time to set these effects up. I'm still really interested in it, though! :)

Oh yeah. Image mapping onto the cake. I've seen some stunning examples of that. Must get messy for keystone correction & so on though.

Seen it being used at quite some distance (up to 15 metres) and its still been very bright, without any boxing. Obviously not as far as a 75 watt projector, but I could always get one of them as well and mix it up depending on the venue. This very much suits that venues I play at as they are all under 100 number rooms with pale walls. :)

Yes thats who i have been chatting with. The results they have created are stunning at quite some distance also. They rate this projector as the mutts nuts. Apart from a Benq model they have raved about nothing else. I was looking at Alibaba model for £1200 with 6500 lumens 15,000:1 ratio, but was advised to stay away from Chinese products when it comes to projectors and stick with the big brands.
There was a thread on here recently about "the next trend" and living monograms/cake mapping seems to be one of them. It also takes a lot more investment and skill to set it up when compared to throwing out a load of Stairville up lighters, so should represent a more specialised extra.

I've seen some much better effects than that, Shaun! I'll dig them out later on tonight and share them on my Facebook wall if you want to take a look. But it'll be after 10pm probably. I'll tag you in when I've sorted it! ;)
