Guys - which version of this should I be playing? I always cosidered this to be a James & Bobby Purify song thoguh it is not a song I generally play all the time but the other night it was asked for and I was severely remonstrated for playing the wrong version! It's the only version I had, perhaps they wanted some cover version?

Hi Rich,
The one I would guess most average Joe is familiar with would be the version on the Blues Brothers soundtrack, which features one Ray Charles on lead vocals.
Personally I like the James and Bobby Purify and Ike and Tina Turner versions.
Edit: Your experience brings to mind the countless times I got grief when I played 'The Time Warp.' If I chose the version from the original soundtrack to Rocky Horror (the one with Richard 'Crystal Maze' O' Brien) I'd get some oik moaning they wanted the rather bad version by Damian, which had that dodgy Pete Hammond remix. The original version Damian did wasn't that bad as it was closer to the original. Can't please some folk.

The Five Du Tones was the original (which was in Hairspray) or Ray Charles with the Blues Brothers are the only other ones I have besides James & Bobby Purify - there’s no ‘wrong’ one in my opinion, but depends on what your client was used to hearing I suppose.
Funnily enough I had a Canadian guest at my party last night who couldn’t understand why the Chipmunks version of Shout was so going down so well - until I explained it was Lulu, he was obviously used to the Isley Brothers (I also prefer the Isley’s but Lulu was the better option in this particular set).

There's also an Ike and Tina version, but Blues Brothers is always my first choice.

Cheers Guys
I always believed that James & Bobby Purify was the original - not Five Du Tones (which I have not heard and will check out, thanks for the info)
I have heard the Ike & Tina Turner and Blues brothers versions, though I did not have them
Is this just an example of a cover version being better that the original? For example Take That / Lulu - Relight My Fire compared with the original 1978? Dan Hartman / Loleatta Holoway recording, or for that matter numerous versions of Unchained Melody before the Righteous Brothers?
Oh PS Funkymook - I agree - the Isley Brothers recording of 'Shout' I believe from 1958 and predating their recordings on the Motown label by several years far outranks any other better known versions IMHO ;)

I love the James & Bobby Purify version, and tend to play that most.
