10pm last night, landline went out. Ever one to try new things, I reported it online. Eventually, the system told me " no problem our end ". I wanted confirmation by a diligent, helpful, caring real person, so I rang in the fault.

Automated system. :Censored::Censored: Calm down Peter, it's only a phone line.

Morning arrives, at 9.15am, I get straight through to said person.

She tells me all is fine her end, must be me. Try taking things to bits. :Censored::Censored::Censored::Censored:

I ring off, and do so, because I don't want to look a fool if she's right, but it makes no difference.
I ring back. Long, long, long wait now. I ask her to ring me back. Line's engaged, she says. No it isn't, I reply calmly and politely. ( Yeah right, believe that, and you can nail jelly to the ceiling ;) ) She thus insists fault's my end, and she'll organise a man to fix it.

On Thursday! :Censored::Censored::Censored::Censored::Censored: Better still, if the fault is anything to do with me, I'll be £130 poorer. :Censored::Censored::Censored::Censored::Censored: :Censored:

The Sherlock Holmes inquisitive gene in me gets the better of me, and I start ringing round my area. All the phones in at least a two mile radius of me appear to be busy as well. Hmmmm. Still think the fault's in my house, do you, BT? :whistle:

I'm currently awaiting a ringback from the fault hotline. They're currently experiencing " a high volume of calls ". Funny that, isn't it?

Now I'm only a simple soul, but I'd have expected a whole exchange going offline to show up on their radar by now. :confused:

The ringback informs me that, yes there is a fault outside my house, and yes, the whole :Censored: area is off, and yes they have been getting a lot of calls . What a surprise.


I think the little fella has had enough exercise for one day, I'll let him sleep. I'm eagerly anticipating the " how did we do " survey from BT. I don't think they'll like the answers.

I had a similar problem with Virgin Media a few years ago. Phone and broadband all to :Censored::Censored::Censored::Censored:. Used mobile to check the service status, no problem it said. Rang Bangalore, no problems reported mem sahib.

Sod it thought I, I'll walk to the shop before the rant-a-thon starts.

Lo and behold, at the end of the road, a gert big Virgin Media van with two blokes, heads buried in the green switchbox. I asked them if there was a problem and they told me they had been there a couple of hours sorting out a problem. Shame nobody told Bangalore I said.

One of them got straight on his mobile (it worked so probably on O2) and had a little sweaty. The other told me that they were just testing and it should be sorted soon.

On my way back from the shop, they were Sat in the vampire with cups of tea. Thumbs up as I went past and when I got home, all was working.

I did ask Virgin for an explanation and applications and apology but it must have got lost in the post.

Pattern developing here? The BT online status checker thing told me all was well in my area, but other poor sods were in big trouble. When I pointed out to the lady at the other end that I'd have been delighted if at 9am they'd answered my call with " I'm sorry, all the lines are down in your area, we're working on it as fast as we can ", I'd have gone away a happy and reassured bunny. Why couldn't they do this? :confused:

I got caught with the £130 charge a few years ago.

Talk Rubbish told me they were cutting me off for Slow Band as its known around here (24 hours) to improve things--load of baloney.

When the service did not resurface after 24 hours ( it was all clearly stated in a letter from them) I managed to contact them on the phone to be told no its ok.

But it wasnt.:daft:

Fiddled about and eventually got so annoyed THINKING it was my equipment that I apparently replugged something back in the wrong hole---silly boy.

This became apparent when the BT engineer finally checked everything. If they had put things back when they said they would I would not have had the problem.

So busy I couldnt be bothered to contest it.

Speaking to people in Timbuktu doesnt help.

Hope its fixed soon.

At least you have a choice of supplier, as I'm in Hull I'm lumbered with Karoo, can't even have a wisp supplier due to being surrounded by massive trees

You can take Waitrose off the list.

Nothing available today because too many people using the system ( apparently there is a limit to the number of people who can enjoy free wi fi at any time and I wasnt one of them :mad:)

Something to do with people who obviously get far too much holiday and instead of being back at work spend it drinking free coffee in Waitrose.:daft:

We now appear to have something approaching full functionality, as long as we don't mind not having a dial tone. :confused:
