Hi all,

Spent yesterday changing, tidying up and re-wiring the crossbar on my ultimax.
I thought it needed a change so reluctantly took off a couple of lights (H2o's) and replaced them with a couple of...........Dynamos.
Yep, the Dynamos came back out of storage and were like a breath of fresh air. It's funny how a little change can make a difference here and there.

I was quite amazed at the amount of lights I have that I am not using at the moment but I am going to keep hold of them.
Currently stored away are the following:
2 x Obsessions
2 x Mystics
2 x Dynamos
2 x H2o's
2 x Martin EF2
2 x X Move Moving Heads (Going to try and use these this year if I can)
3 x Green Lasers
2 x Red Laser
1 x Cluster Laser
1 x White LED Mirror Ball type effect

My crossbar now looks like this....

ADJ Starball White - Dynamo - Swarm 4 FX - Revo 3 - Revo 3 - Swarm 4 FX - Dynamo - ADJ Starball White

Everything apart from the Starballs are linked together Master / Slave

I also tidied up my lock up and cleaned stuff and noticed that I have quite a few lights for Uplighting so I don't think I'll be buying much this year.
I currently have:
10 x KAMRGB 192 Panels
4 x ADJ Megabar 50 RC
6 x Equinox Power Baterns
4 x Slim Par 56

I didn't realise I had so much stuff. I also have a couple of things that need fixing but I haven't got round to it.
I have a spare Denon DN2500 that needs looking at as one side was playing up.
I also have a Numark Double CD that needs to go into a flight case and I have 4 spare mixers.

I've made the mistake in the past (especially with vinyl and CD's) of getting rid of stuff so I am reluctant to do that with this equipment. I would like to keep as much as possible.
I am always thinking of the worst that could happen (for example: My van getting broken into) so a lot of the technical stuff is kept elsewhere in a warmer and safer environment. This includes all of my speakers, playout systems, projectors etc...

It is a pain in the butt doing all of this but it is worthwhile. Has anyone done the same yet or is thinking of going through everything?
(I forgot how good those little Dynamos are / were)

No but all my cables are going to get a damn good clean & a check. I thought I'd knacked one of my altos the other week because of a dodgy xlr cable (nothing but hf coming out!). I wouldn't care, none of my cables are exactly old. Well, apart from the ones I made 20 years ago that are still going strong (but are a little short).

I need to sort out an overhead rig for my ultimax. I have the solid uprights for it but I don't know whether to ditch them in favour of telescopic poles or just use a truss on castings. I guess if I go with a ladder truss I might also be able to use it with tripods too, for when I'm not on the ultimax.

I've ordered another four wireless DMX boards so I can continue saving myself setup hassle. Then the next job after converting the rest of my lights to wireless will be to make some new programs.

I might add a quad phase HP as a centrepiece soon & I'm starting to see some good second hand bins come up, which will give my pa a nice kick in the low end it's so sorely lacking. Better this than a completely new pa for the moment I think.

I've done better than break even in the first six months of operating but I need to increase my turnover before a pa upgrade.

Quite a few spare lights you have! A lot of setup time evaluation and slight improvements. A few things I've done :

Bought ddj sx to upgrade from mc6000.
Got new case to fit IEC, XLR, DMX cables ddj sx and all the essential bits like tape, cloths, extention leads etc where before the controller had its own case and I carried loads of spares on the same case making it much heavier!
New taller sturdier lighting stand, prewired to a much better standard with God knows how many cable ties and velcro straps. Also fitted quick release bolts which speeds up the process a little.
Need to get new led for my xmove but still feels like robbery paying nearly £60 for a single 20w LED.
I've brought a numark orbit for controlling my lights via freestyler, very excited about using it!
Also I've got some of those diffusers for widening beam angle uplighting / dancefloor wash. Was about £20 for enough for 14 lights which seems alright to me!

I've had a big clear out of DJ equipment on gumtree, mainly all the stuff I had when first started out but has been sat around for ages.

Changed the booth gantry on my main rig

This last year it has had

ADJ RGBW Octobeam - Triclops - Six Shooter - Six Shooter - Triclops - ADJ RGBW Octobeam

I now have

Acme Dynamic 25 Spin - Dynamic 25 Scan - Dynamic 25 Roller - Dynamic 25 Roller - Dynamic 25 Scan - Dynamic 25 Spin

I still have the old lights so I can use them instead if I feel like it or use them on the second rig I have built, I have rented this one out a couple of times and I am also looking for someone with DJ experience who would like to do walk-on bookings on a fee-sharing basis but has no rig/van themselves.

Many of us have. :o:o

I'm hoping to use the Swarms and Equinox battens a lot this year, and having moved the Samurai on, to use the EFX more.

That sounds familiar !

I'm hoping to use the Swarms and Equinox battens a lot this year

My new t-bar had it's second outing last night....and apart from a couple of bits I was impressed.

Apart from the time it takes to put it up (literally under a minute), it looks quite tidy. It's currently running an Ultrabar along the top, and underneath it's Equinox Blaze - Swarm FX5 - Swarm F5 - Equinox Blaze.

The only thing letting it down at the moment are the Blazes - you can't see them with the other lights running (to be fair, they were some of the first lights I got when I started back up a couple or three years ago). Soooo...thinking of replacing those either with my Dualize LED's (I'd forgotten how bright those things were), or maybe my Headbangers (which last night were on the floor next to the booth). Not a big fan of moving heads on a t-bar though due to the amount of movement they create.

As for the battens - I have a brace of those and until last night hadn't really decided what to do with them. The original idea was to use them to back-light my Equinox screen which I've since retired. So until last night their use had been limited to illuminating the speaker poles (either with or without scrim). Last night had no need for poles (I was on a wooden stage and put the speakers on the floor....plenty of bottom end :) ). The stage though had a "lip" running along the front of it, so I ran the battens in master/slave one either side of the stage angled at 45 degrees to the floor. I still can't believe how good (cosmetically and brightness-wise) those things are!

For the first time in a few years, I changed my show just before Christmas. Now using RCF Evox 8, Denon MC6000, ADJ NE1 controlling a pair of Starbursts, Wizard Rush and Chalet IRC255 heads on 1.5m truss totems.

Really like the new look, but do the starbursts not bug you - having lights moving/flashing about behind your stand ?

If they're DMXed properly I expect they can be really tasteful looking. Not the motion sickness inducing flashing nightmares I've seen in too many DJ videos lately. Yeah so what if the motor can spin them at 60rpm - it doesn't mean you SHOULD ;) FWIW the videos I've seen of untamed Wizards in action provoke the same emotion in me... as in ARGHHH! Slow them down!

I have just the one starburst on a totem that is uplit and I place it elsewhere in the venue because I obviously don't have the symmetry of having two of them.
I just let it do its own thing and think it looks great.

Yup - one of my jobs this weekend now I've actually sussed DMX, found a system I'm happy with and have a weekend off (hooray!), is to tame my Wizard knock offs (I've got the Acme Jaguar 250s).

As much as I like the idea of only having one going though....the thought of the bulb going pop mid-gig would scare the life out of me (and yes, I carry a couple of spares but you've still got that period where you have to let it cool down and then actually replace it)

The trouble is Chris, is that I am comparing apples and oranges. I have a Wizard Rush which is a £900 fixture and uses a short arc discharge lamp that projects very crisp gobos to the back of the biggest room and then I have a couple of £180 ADJ balls. The Wizard can do a mirrorball effect and the gobos are perfectly focused and shaped. The ones on the Starburst are not. But....they are effective round the disco area.

Clean and lean is what I was aiming for. For 4 years, I have just been using 2 x Wizard Extremes, so that is a lot of effects for me! It only takes an extra 5 minutes to set up though strangely.

I am very pleased with the Evox. Great looking and fantastic sound.

Well....I've finally spent this evening DMX'ing one of my Jaguars (I'll clone the other one)

The wife's dead chuffed with having various gobos and colours all over the telly screen tonight

I'm impressed. Once tamed, it's actually one hell of a fixture - brighter than the sun and beats anything with LED's in it that I currently own hands down! Plus - I've now got a first dance routine which is similar to a glitter ball....all from just ONE fixture!!!! :beer1::beer1::beer1:

So...I've now ordered a new KAM hazer (my QTX went bang :( ), and a winch stand (the Jag's are heavy)

So...looks like the new setup is going to be [either Pocket Innospot/Headbanger] - AJD MegaTriPar (top and bottom of the bar) - Jaguar - AJD MegaTriPar (top and bottom of the bar) - [either Pocket Innospot/Headbanger]

So that's the general party setup done then :)

Anyone want to buy a pair of Equinox Gigbars? ;)

Weddings - add my totem trusses with Spherions (sorry....they just work for the first dance) and the job's a good 'un. Total setup time.....(sharp intake of breath)...probably 30 minutes tops :)

Looking forward to this year then :)

When you consider that a couple of Wizards will set you back at least a grand (and that's without cases or spare lamps and at a rare discounted price) you're getting a hefty lightshow. I've seen some DJs who work in the realms of four figures & they've had but ONE wizard on a pole and a couple of wash panels on their speaker stands. Only three lights?! Ah yes, but what lights they are.

I can't make up my mind whether I like Wizards or not. Yeah they throw over a wide area and are mightily bright, but do I want disco lighting to reach absolutely everywhere?

Yeah, sorry, should explain...with smoke (or fog outside my house!) they are great. But without, you get small dots/bubbles that don't really reach anywhere.

Two Wizard Extremes have much better coverage than 5-10 led lights. Trust me, I have observed many other DJs lighting whilst running a photo booth and 2 of these are brighter, have much better coverage than most other effects and whilst under control, can take the place of quite a few other effects. :)

+1 on that.

OK - mine are the Acme version of the same thing (same factory, different Gobos)....it's still a 250w fixture.

Although I own two of them, I've actually finished re-designing one of my many t-bars now (I treated myself to a winch stand last week just to make life a little easier) I now roll with:

4 x MegaTriPars along the top of the bar for washes where needed
Then underneath it's Headbanger10 > Jaguar MSD250 > Headbanger10

I could have used several different variations of moving head, but took the Headbangers out of storage because they're lightweight for being on a bar and unbelievably bright.

I've also now got the whole shooting match under DMX control (I finally got around to teaching myself how it works). I'm impressed. The Jaguar has been tamed and can now be used for literally anything from slow dances to raves (and with just a little haze....or vape juice depending on where I'm working), I've changed my mind on investing in a couple of lasers...I just don't need them.

I'm now a very happy bunny. The whole lighting setup is going to be around as quick to put up as sticking up and slaving a couple of Gigbars (which I can see now becoming all but redundant apart from the smaller pub jobs). In fact my total set up time now from getting stuff into the venue to turning on the show is going to be around 20 minutes

I'm now in the process of sticking Freestyler on an old Windows based tablet I own so that I can run DMX on a touchscreen. I may even look to see if it can run VDJ as a backup solution rather than carting a second laptop around (more space on the booth that way if it works)

This year is most definitely about working smarter, not harder :)

Been doing some toying around tonight after the weekend's wedding with the "new look" lighting....

I've use Jaguar MSD250's on the Equinox uprights for weddings (along with a t-bar behind me) and on Sunday night...I was impressed. But...it's always worried me that the Equinox uprights tend to flap around a little bit with the weight of the Jaguars on top of them, and let's face it....a square section upright into a round top casing is never going to end nicely is it?

Don't get me wrong....it works, it looks pretty and it's safe (those uprights are designed for a lot more weight than that).

The other main problem is that one of the venues I do weddings in is a pain for ceiling height. Remember, the Equinox uprights are fixed length and in this particular venue they're either too high, or too low, depending on the uprights used. Believe it or not, I've been known to have the uprights "floating", i.e. clamped halfway up the booth.....it's always worried me that they're going to slip.

So...a little order to my friends at WhyBuyNew and I've got new wedding lighting :)

I ordered two of the Rhino 3m t-bars and four of the Rhino quick clamps. I've removed the legs from the t-bars (they can easily be refitted if I need them as standard tripods again), put the t-bar part into storage for another day, and used the clamps to attach them to the back of the Equinox booth. The result? It's a lot sturdier (the uprights are thicker for a start), and they're round-section so the top-hats are a lot more secure. They're also fully height adjustable so no more problems with the lower ceilings on this set up.

And then I played some more :)

Normally on the wedding rig, I also rock up with a t-bar containing four ADJ Mega Tripar profiles for a little bit of wash/background light. I hate having a tripod in my working area....I tend to trip over the thing more times than a little :(

These actually clamp quite nicely underneath the Jaguars (obviously angled in different directions to give a proper wash effect). so my entire wedding lighting rig is now contained on two uprights :beer1:

Now I just need to find some really short IEC extensions to go between everything and some really short DMX cables...just to keep everything tidy. What I also need is some sort of splitter for the DMX cabling so that I can go from the controller nice and neatly to both of the uprights without taking a cable from the last fixture on one upright to the first fixture on the other if that makes sense.

Now....if I could just find a way to fit wheels to the Equinox booth so it could be rolled from van to setup area......... ;)

Okey dokey......

I can't show you it assembled because I took it to bits last night, but those who've seen my setup will know it looks like this:

17800

Note the square Equinox poles from the upright kit on the side.....they don't half flap about a bit.

So, I went to my friends at WhyBuyNew.com and purchased:

Four of these (http://www.whybuynew.co.uk/accessories/lighting-accessories/clam10-prolight-multi-lighting-clamp_1.htm)

17801

And two of these (http://www.whybuynew.co.uk/accessories/stands-accessories/lighting-stands/rhino-compact-black-light-stand-stan02.htm)

17802

Note - the reason for these stands is that the legs can be taken off very quickly and easily, and hence can be kept and put back on if needed as t-bars again :)

So, how do I attach to said booth?

The Equinox booth has a convenient set of 2 holes on the back of the frame (I'm assuming for attaching things to).
So, take said Rhino clamps, replace the bolts in them with the ones from the t-bar (the ones they come with aren't long enough) and insert them into the booth thus:

17803

Then as you can see, there's a clamp at the top and bottom of the booth to hold the now legless extendable tripid pole

17804

Then it's just a case of using a standard top-casing (sorry, can't remember where I got those from) on the fixture to clamp it to the top of the pole :)

However, the bolt through the hole is just above the square hole where the cross support bars goes, and it means it is hard to get the cross-support bars in to the hole

And two of these (http://www.whybuynew.co.uk/accessories/stands-accessories/lighting-stands/rhino-compact-black-light-stand-stan02.htm)

Aha! This is likely just what I need to use on my ultimax to give me height adjustable uprights! Though I'm already considering buying a cheaper tripod stand without t-bar & dismembering it.

Next on my list is a gas lift stand for my gigabar. I've taken to using it (upside down) with a scanner each side on the bottom (top) and a cluster laser in the middle at the top (bottom). It works & looks okay but it's a right sod to elevate. 2X 4kg + 15kg + 3kg... And the friction lock on the top section no longer works so lifting all that and putting the holding pin in by myself is hard work.

I changed my top bar again at the weekend and removed the ADJ Starball's and replaced them with the ADJ Inno Pocket Barrels that I bought a while back.
I like them and on Monday I realised (D'oh!) that you can get a little remote control for them so I ordered one and tested it yesterday in the house.
It's a great little thing.

I've got a couple of those floating around (I DMX'd mine).

Going back a couple of years kit-wise tonight. It's my local primary's yr6 leaver's doo. Normally I'd rock up with good old fashioned light boxes to a school disco. Tonight, we're going funsized - Equinox screen (haven't used that in a while) and brace of Gigbars (again, not used in ages) in master/slave mode. Should take no more than 10 mins in and out.....it's too hot to faff around with big stuff tonight
