My favorite reason was "if you reduce the price we will allow you to take photos of your set-up for promotional use" this was offered because at the time I had never worked at this particular venue

I did a wedding at a huge pile in the forest. The daughter phoned me from her business in Hong Kong and said.

"my parents have to sell the house as they are not making the money they did, we had such lovely parties as children and it will be the last one, so can we have a discount".

I thought, well they could sell the house for 1-2 million buy a lovely cottage near by for £6-700 and comfortably live off the profit for the rest of their lives as both kids had moved out ages ago. Oh well worth trying i guess?

We were finally able to fix the client up with an acceptable deal for everyone as a local operator has been able to do the job a bit cheaper!!!!!!!

Only last year, I had a bride and groom ask me if I would consider doing their reception for free as, in return, they would be happy to promote my services through their church magazine and local community events in some backward village in rural Kent. I actually laughed out loud as I thought it was probably a prank call from another DJ...only to hear their palpable disappointment on the other end of the line.

You hired them the kit for an iPod wedding yet stayed the duration of the party, and didn't get paid upfront, why?
I hope you got paid the hire fee plus a suitable fee for your time, assuming you did, did they actually save any money?

I do a number of these DIY discos and I have to say it isn't always about price. Some have just seen awful DJs and rather do it themselves or they're really into their music like their friends so know exactly what they want to hear on the night. Considering our packages go out for £180+ a night it's more expensive than a number of DJs I know charge.....

They don't know it but I didn't actually do a discount on it, I just charged my usual fee.

After I set up I started to walk into the bar and the bride asked where I was going.
I said to the bar as they hadn't paid for a DJ.
She lost her rag with her new husband.
They refused to pay more for a DJ so the best man took the mic and controlled the Ipod.

It finished about 11:15pm as everyone has gone home or to the bar.

It was pretty boring night not having anything to do.

We had a bit of a hiccup when I setup. On full volume the disco was very quiet.
I had to tell them to turn up the volume on the Ipod !

Yes, that's my experience also, sometimes it's about price for sure, but not as often as many would suspect, my guestimate would be < 20%

I suppose it was inevitable, now being messed about by not giving the gig details so we can set up the Contract.:Censored:

Looks like its the pay a deposit in 48 hours or find someone else threat.

Oh well time to toughen up yet again--we have increased our cancellation policy to 30 days and asking for 50 per cent upfront with no refunds for Charity gigs.

A band we know just had 2 Burns Night gigs cancelled, mine has been as well.

I'm not sure I can top it but I once got the heads up and then had a phone call from a lady, who asked for a quote for a 6 hour disco on a Saturday night and then asked if I could do it cheaper because she was on income support.

I was not sympathetic.

I had a lady on the phone who only had £100 to pay for a disco. She spent around 5 minutes telling me a sob story that she was unemployed and on benefits, and how she never realised how expensive a disco would be. By the end of the call I felt a little sorry for her until I realised that I had a living to make.

I gave her the number of a local dj who goes out cheap.


Also on facebook the other day someone was asking for any spare disco lights from any Dj's who had some that they no longer needed, as they couldn't afford to hire a disco.

Back in the 80's I was once "booked" to play music, compere and generally help out at what was the forerunner of today's Wedding Fayres. I had to provide music for a bridal catwalk and microphones for the bridal shop owners as well as doing raffles, announcements etc.

I agreed what I thought was the fee but it was only on the day that I was asked for the money! They deemed that I was standing and advertising and that I should pay to be there, not be paid for all the work I was doing!!!!

I switched off and started to pack away. Funny how we came to some agreement (in my favour of course) after that and folding bits of paper with the Queen's head onwere produced for my sweaty palm to grasp.

I glad you posted that, Jim, because I completely misunderstood the original post. I read it as she wanted money off because she wanted to buy perfume herself. That didn't make much sense but your post has cleared that up for me!! :daft:

I still blame ebay, the Internet and Black Friday for making people WRONGLY think you can get discounts on a LABOUR INTENSIVE service.

Many people expect something for nothing.

I write software and sell it cheap £20.
Then I get daft questions like does it do what a certain £400 package does ?
Of course the answer is no or I would be selling it for £400.

I did a simple app for Windows and sell it for £1-50.
People still expect it to do what a £400 package does !

People want to pay for a Mini but expect a Rolls Royce.

I never understand that logic, how does leaving a few lights at home make up for the fee deficit? You can only do one booking per evening regardless of how much gear you take with you, OK a bit less set-up and take-down time but you’re still on less money. And if the clients are negatively commenting on the show you’re presenting then it could even have a detrimental effect.

My point is that people expect a full disco even when they ask for a discount.

Its OK for those earning £500 a night with top notch gear.
When every customer is asking for a low price then cuts have to be made somewhere to compete.
Pretty much every enquiry asks what the price is first.

My point is that not taking a few lights isn’t really making a cut on your side of things, how does that make up for the discounted fee?

And if the number of lights is important to your clients then taking less isn’t being competitive, if there’s a price ceiling then taking more lights is.

I agree with that totally.

I would also add that when it comes to Disco work, customers are paying for my time and experience and not the number of lights or fancy equipment I may have.
I don't personally see how leaving a couple of lights behind makes any difference to me working for 4 or 5 hours.
