Line to XLR adapter?

I need some advice as i am not that technical as i have been spoilt by working clubs for 20 years and never had to really mess with much cable wise apart from a mic cable and photo to cdjs etc:)

Speakers i have are XLR and my Traktor s2 has phono/line out and no XLR. I need an adapter. Did a quick look on maplins and drew a black.

Is it one of these i need?

Ah balls. I have bought 2x 10m xlr's :(

I am a tad confused what cables. Do you only ever piggy back the xlr's to add extra speakers and run xlr right left if you have traditional xlr's on your mixer?

I'm not sure what you mean by 'piggy backing' XLRs, but essentially you'll just need to have two Jack to XLR leads - one goes directly into your left speaker and the other goes into the right.

If you have balanced outputs use them, be they xlr or jacks (TRS.. looks like a headphone connector), every time over unbalanced RCA connections.

So what if you just bought two cables, they're only a few quid & will see you right when you upgrade your controller to one with xlr outputs :)

In theory you should be okay running unbalanced audio to your speakers but a DJ working for me over Christmas had a laptop earth loop when he used my mixer with RCA outputs on his first night. I solved it on the spot by disconnecting the grounds on my lead going from his laptop to the mixer (it was fine either way til the charger was plugged in). The next time he played, I'd put my old formula sound mixer in the way with xlr outs & the earth loop was gone.

And this was all with the speakers, mixer & laptop plugged into the same extension cable. Go figure.

Besides anything else, xlr connectors are robust, certainly more robust than jack plugs & definitely way sturdier than RCAs.

Indeed i agree the xlr's will come in to play soon enough. My Kontol s2 will do for now but for mic inputs i am already looking at the two channel denon mpc4000.

Fret not, XLR to Jack adaptors are readily available (basically it’s just a very short XLR/Jack lead), just makes sure you get the correct XLR (male)

Yep, they’ll do it, personally I prefer the short lead ones though, those all in one options stick out too much and are easily knocked which could damage the jack sockets.

Ah yes i see what you mean.

For now the S2 will do fine in a gator bag to transport laptop and controller etc, but i will probly upgrade to either the denon mpc4000 or one of the Pioneer units. Both will have XLR on the controller.

The only reason I asked was because if you do use your S2 from inside the Traktor flight cases, there would have been no chance of using what Steve suggested as they wouldn't fit.

But you don't, so no problem. :)

I'd go with Benny as I much prefer all-in-one leads as opposed to using adaptors. It means there are less weak points that can go wrong. Connectors and connections are always the weak point in the setup.
