Carts wheels and rock n roller questions...

Currently I've got a sack truck and a small platform dolly... Somehow I'd never seen these rock n roller carts and the thread about best purchases has got me thinking about buying one.

I'm probably looking at the all terrain version with the handles being the same height either side I can see it being useful but my questions are:

A) how well built are these, are they quite solid / do the brakes work well?

B) is there any reason I wouldn't be able to load it all up on the cart and wheel it into my van to save unloading?

C) would it be suitable to make a desk to fit on top (maybe making a few holes) and replace my table with the cart?

Im not a regular DJ, however I have one--

A.Not bad but ive had to get my garage to club hammer back into vertical the stop which keeps the collapsible upright pulling handle er upright and tight because there can be a lot of slack otherwiswe -not an issue just maintenance. Brakes useless for such a heavy load--i dont event think of using them. Clearly you want a one stop journey if possible --I cant do it as old school with big heavy speakers etc sooo you are going to load on AS MUCH ON AS POSSIBLE.:rolleyes: Hence brakes not fit for purpose.

B. How longs a piece of string, how much gear do you have--see my comment above--Mr Average DJ will be along soon with the answer.:D

C. No idea, gut feeling is no--

D. Additional issues--wont go up stairs, forget gravel. Even over a step into premises can be difficult UNLESS a kind helper yanks it for you.

Has limitations on turning circle which impacts in premises with tight turns at access points.However not yet had a refusal to go through doors.

Wheels may break--friend uses for Rodeo Bull work and has had a broken wheel, probably overloaded.

Overall my view is absolutely brilliant, bear in mind because you probably want a ONE STOP journey its going to be a fair old weight to drag--
for example ramps in Hotels which are put down to avoid a set of stairs--you need to be a Sherpa to drag the load up the steep :daft:slope

Enjoy and it folds down neatly.

I use one of the smaller ones (R8 I think) and I’ve had no issues at all with it. Solid and reliable and folds down so doesn’t take up too much space.

They already have shelf accessories to make them into a worktop, have a google and see if it’s worth buying or making your own.

As for how much weight it will take I’d say if you can pull or push it up a slope then it’s not overloaded. (They do tell you the maximum weight for each model and it’s quite a lot).

Bungy ropes or straps are a must if you want to stack it high.

Never used the brakes, probably ok on the flat to stop it moving but you’d need to use something else to secure it in a van, first corner and it will probably topple over as it’s quite narrow.

Ah good to know about the brakes - they don't look like most wheel brakes I've seen hence the worry!
And gravel no problem, I don't encounter it all that often!

I've seen the shelf and they have a nice double shelf which I cannot find to buy anywhere. Maybe the workstation idea isn't a great one though if it's quite narrow it'll be easy to topple when setup maybe...

I've just purchased a R12RT and used it for the first time at Saturday's gig.

I've just gone through my diary of 2015 bookings to see if I'd use it that much and it's reminded me of some long and painful trips that I'd forgotten earlier in the year a couple of which were over 100m from van to setup area. With loads probably being around to 50-60m van to setup area trip... what have I been doing with sack trucks making probably 6 trips all this time ...

I use the all terrain cart.

A: Very well built, and the brakes work great on mine.
B: No reason at all, as long as you secure the equipment with bungees.
C: There are accessory shelves you can purchase for the cart.

That might even be an idea for me. At the moment, I still cart round my Ultimax winch and wheels, even though I no longer use the winches. I could stick that behind the S&H and put my mixer etc on it and use it to carry equipment in and out and it would take less space than the Ultimax too. I'l have to have a look at the size spec....

Got to admit - I made the switch from the R2 to the R12RT during Christmas....and not looked back yet.

The wheels are bigger so I can get over gravel, I can stack it unbelievably high (this one even takes my 80's light boxes in one trip for retro nights).

I DO like the look of turning it into a workstation - I'll have to have a look at those shelves. Could just extend the life of my Equinox booth (which has a bowed shelf) by quite a bit ;)

The 2 shelves are what sparked the idea for me.
But you can't buy them anywhere that I can see?

I could easily make up my own shelves from plywood and some car carpet. The weight and size of ply not an issue because of the cart itself! Will have to wait and see when I get my delivery.

Note the top one has the rear upright leaning back quite a bit as I mentioned.The lower one doesnt.

And it arrived on Friday.

First impressions, it looks good. Certainly sturdier that the hand truck I purchased last year (both the front casters have fallen off it at the same bloody time!). The holes that you feed the pins through to attached the casters didn't line up, so I had to give them a considerable belt with a hammer, but other than that, it looks good.

It'll go on it's maiden voyage next month when I start gigging again.

That is one thing I found disappointing, the brakes on mine (R12RT) are rubbish. Wonder if there is a fault or something I done wrong on arrival ?

Mine still hasn't come :( ... I think it's because I added a lighting effect to the order and it was low on stock.

Just keep that hammer handy for when the uprights go slack because you have bent the metal stop underneath ===just club it back into place:beer1:

Got my cart today.
Are they brakes or just something to make the wheels harder to turn? Absolutely pointless! I can still turn them with my hand.

Needed to sand off some paint for the Castors and give the pin a whack. The stops for the uprights definitely gonna need some hammering at some point. Pretty sturdy though :)
