Thought I'd briefly introduce myself in here before hitting a specific forum with a VERY lengthy question.

Im John from Doncaster. Adopted Yorkshireman as I'm originally from a little town in Cheshire. Born and raised in a music mad family, where there was (and still is) always some sort of tune playing somewhere in the house if someone was awake. As a result, music is my absolute passion. Wanted to get into the DJ scene since I was a teenager but I've waited until now - I'm 36 - as I wanted to start out when I felt I was old and wise enough.

I am starting from scratch and know it will be a very long and arduous road, which may be successful, may not, but I'm gonna give it a bloody good go. Thought I'd try and tap into the knowledge of the experts as a starting point. Please be gentle with me as I have MANY questions.

Sorry I've just looked at other people's introductions and noticed I've been a little brief. So.....

- Favourite Genre: Indie. Particularly the Britpop era, but I'd encompass the likes of The Jam, Stones, Beatles etc within that.
- Favourite song: Slide Away - Oasis
- Type of DJing looking to do: May be controversial, but I'm actually looking at quite a specific market, namely, themed evenings (Indie/RnR, 80s and Cheesy Pop). Im aware this may limit the amount of bookings I may receive but that's the path I'm looking to take initially.
- Food: Steak and chips (medium rare obviously)
- Drink: Quite partial to a Birra Moretti, but I'm slowly becoming a real/craft ale bore.
- TV: The Sopranos, The Shield, The Wire, Sons of Anarchy, Breaking Bad.
- Film: Goodfellas, Casino, Donnie Brasco, Carlitos Way, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs.

And most importantly....

- Favourite crisps: Pickled onion Monster Munch.

Oh, married and have a 5 year old son too.

A few things, John.
First up, welcome along. Next, your intro was just fine, you happen to have walked in on one of our merry little whimsies. :) You'll get used to that. Us Yorkies are prepared to welcome most folk, but be warned, your naturalisation papers will be a while coming. ;) ( More whimsy ) There are a few folk in your general area just starting up, so you'll be able to compare notes. There are also some who have been doing it since Dinosaurs roamed the Earth, but I'd take what they say with a pinch of salt.( Whimsy again, you'll soon learn to spot it. )

This is a wonderful place for sharing knowledge, any questions you have, just ask away. :welcome2:

Ah, I feel (a little) loved now.

I'll be honest, I'm terrified jumping in and asking the questions I know I need to ask, but this just seems the obvious place. I'm literally starting from scratch so I basically need to know the job lot, which I know will be a bind for many. I can almost hear the moans and groans before I've even posted the queries, but nothing ventured etc...

One question I will ask, do you know how I can add a picture to my profile? Struggling. I thought just tapping on the standard default grey PIC would give me the option, but seemingly not.

Funky, funnily enough I saw you dabbled in indie (the website), so had a gander through your link. I must say mate, your website is really impressive.

Very wise words and thanks you for that, made real sense. I've decided to go for the specific market as I want to start off playing genres where I'm comfortable and know the songs, hopefully have a decent enough knowledge to know which songs would be apt for the occasions and those certain moments. If I'm even remotely successful and gain more confidence over the first few years, then maybe move into the more general market. But I need to learn to walk before I can run.

As you say, no doubt I'll be pecking your head over the coming weeks/months so I apologise in advance!

Saw the name of your website so was naturally drawn to it. Very impressive mate.

Very wise words you used, never actually thought of it the way you put it across so thanks for that. I wanna start off in the specific markets so I can get used to the whole experience and iron out my faults playing music I know so well, and that I'm passionate about.

I've been DJ'ing for over 40 years and graduated from vinyl to CD but haven't moved on to digital mainly due to the familiarity of using CDs, the cost of uploading al of my misic to digital format and, for me anyway (touching every kind off wood, black cat and rabbit's foot I can find) the complete reliability of using CDs and CD players. Never had a failure. There, the fate has been tempted.

Electromusic in town used to be good for DJ gear but they are now mainly misician based and, though sell DJ gear, its not somewhere to go for advice etc. from DJ orientated staff

Re CDs versus digital playouts, it's a six and two threes. CDs may be cheaper, but they're bulkier, heavier, and DJ software is so simple to use that even I'm using it. That says a lot. :D:D

Even more so now. 10-18 years ago it did have a separate DJ section which was staffed by working DJs who were very helpful to me when I was starting up again round here. However, when they gradually all left, they weren't replaced and the band boys took over.
