I've got an Ultimax booth/stand thing I have a love/hate affair with. But, until my budget improves I'm rather stuck with it for now. I didn't get the overhead kit with it because somebody else already bought that but I have 2 upright poles which are (I think) 32mm diameter. Now, these are all very well & good - I can mount things on them quite easily with half couplers (I may change to different couplings since Hammerited the uprights) but I'd much prefer telescopic poles to ease lifting things up high. I certainly don't see any point getting an overhead bar/truss without being able to inch each side up. My LED lights are - well - light at well under 10kg each but the mass soon adds up.

I've searched & searched for telescopic pole sections online to no avail but have seen some booth stands offering them as custom jobbie extras so I figure they must be available somehow. What are my options? Will I have to (gulp) waste money on tripod stands with the right upright diameter & cut the bases off?

Good news,bad news.

Good news, Ultimax make what you want.

Bad news, they won't fit your stand, and they're expensive. Are you sitting down? (http://www.ultimax1.com/tripods/winch-tripods.html?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage_images.tpl&product_id=110&category_id=40)

Before you flex your spending muscles, check they'll fit your stand. It's worth ringing Ultimax, they're really helpful.

Winches are heavy, John bought some wonderful winches and truss, and the winches weighed a ton, not very user friendly. A set of steps to let you reach your fixed overhead can be a better way. :)

They don't necessarily have to be winched - I've seen Paladin Innovations have custom extras for mounting at the side of their casebooths where the uprights are telescopic. I could safely manage a couple of lights each side that way I think. I've not decided whether I'm to bother with a truss or overhead bar yet.

A small step ladder is a really good idea Peter.. it'll help me in more ways than just putting my lights up - reaching the top shelf of the ultimax for one!

This is the kind of thing I meant:

Basically it looks like what you see attached to a tripod base, only without the tripod base. The lower section of pole would go into the parts of the Ultimax designed to accept poles. Simples, see?
