What is this place coming too, left my van for a hour outside my house, with some dj stuff in it, and someone smashed the window and knicked my tom tom sat nav, honestly in the middle of an estate under a lampost, no one saw a thing, police dont care and wont even come out!!!

Thankfully Disco stuff was not touched (this time) but no doubt who ever done it, they now know.

So guys dont leave any stuff in your vans/cars even for a few hours because some low life will have it.

Sorry to hear about that Mike, hope your insurance will pay for it.
Its always a worry with keeping things in cars, but I know we cant avoid it in our profession.
Try watching on ebay for it, failing that check out any pawn type shops in the area.

mike ive had all my gear go on two occasions same sort of scenario and it just makes you so angry that someone has taken what you have worked your thingys off to build up and buy, in 10 mins with no thoughts or respect for other people.

the police never want to know. i had two laptops nicked from my car, they never even came out. far too busy checking tax discs and people doing 35 in a 30 limit. i really resent paying them from my poll tax.

Not much use to you now, I know, but - while we're on the subject...

More than one person I have heard of has come back to their van, found the side window smashed - the thieving scumbags will see the mounting for the sat nav and will pop the side window to see if it's in the glove box... so remove the mounting as well as the sat nav.

It's very upsetting I'm sure, but the answer is, do not leave anything in your car or van.

Why leave a sat nav in your car?

They are very small and portable, so take it with you. (Not having a pop Mike, but this is common sense)

Apparently they see the suction marks on the windscreen, and that'll be enough for them to have a smash and check inside, so carry some screen wipes too!

Best solution is fitting security deadlocks for the van. Added to an alarm, these will deter most thieves from trying to have the van away. It will make it really difficult to get into the back too, as long as you have metal panels in place of the rear windows.
Also, although it won't stop a break-in, the Disklock steering lock is one of the best on the market. It spins on the steering wheel, so there is no leverage to break the lock. If you back the van up to a post (if there is one about), and then turn the wheel so it is locked onto a kerb, with the steering lock in place it would be a nightmare for them to get in the back.

I lived on a dodgy South London estate for a while, and used to do all the above!

They broke into my car and tried to pinch it, but the van was untouched!

theres just no respect for other peoples property anymore an in fact most of the tykes who steal cant see what they do is wrong - bring back the birch - wont stop everybody but i bet it will cut the problem down a lot

People caught stealing should have there hand chopped off (like in far east...I think). Nasty I know but I guarentee you they wont try it!! Would you have stolen that chocolate bar from the shop if you knew your hand was going to be cut off.....NO is the answer.

I normally take the sat nav out of the car, but as I only popped in to house for 1/2 hr it didnt seem worth it, iam not emptying a car just for that!

But any way cheers for all the comments, and it turns out to be a waste of time insureing stuff as its not covered by car or household cover:(

A friend of mine went to court last month.

He caught a couple of kids breaking into his van.

He glued them to the doors and drive them to the Police station and told them that he caught them messing around in his tools and had played with his Superglue

Thrown out for unsufficient evidence and the kids .............................

suspended sentances for 12 months

Had my flat broken into a few months ago - through my bedroom window. DJ kit all around the room and packed into my walk-in wardrobe. They touched none of it.

They only took a few bits of my flatmate's jewellery and his laptop. I was so relieved. We had only just moved in so I wasn't insured yet. 10k could have went way down the drain....

All insured now....
