We've had quite a lot of discussions about the Cortex on here (put Cortex into the search box and you'll see what I mean!). Also, the Numark version and the Denon version which is due out in the forseeable future.

I saw a cortec hdc 1000 at the DFB open evening. All in all a nice unit, the controls are very firm which gives it a very rugged feel. The jog wheel is very free moving , feels like a numark cdn 88 one. Buttons are very firm making it feel like it wont break very easily. The sound is very good (although they placed it next to a fridge that kept clicking on and sending clicks through the system). The search feature is very like an i pod with a different menu for either artist, song title , wordsearch, playlist or genre. It is very intuitive and i found i could use it in seconds. However the system is only as good as the person who sets it up, if you do not fill in the correct artist genre and other fields when setting it up you will find it nigh on imposable to find a track amongst thousands.
All in all a good piece of kit I may be considering myself in the coming months, but remember you must buy a USB drive or similar to work with it.

If you are looking for a new set of cd players i would consider it a better buy than a new set of denon or numark mid range cd players. Worth it if you are looking to change to digital but not if you are not quite ready yet.

thanks spin very informative .... didnt go to dfb tonight as couldnt find the cortex on their website so didnt know if they stocked it? your evaluation is great and im now quite serious about trying one for myself.

Although not on their website the guy from cortex had a stand there on the evening showing their wares and letting me fiddle a bit. Just a shame they put him on the same circuit as the fridge with the dodgy compressor.

External hard drive is the usb drive. Basically any form of usb memory storage device is compatable. So ipod, usb hard drive, usb zip drive , usb cd drive , sb pen drive. You get the idea.
