Marquee sound advice

Hi all,

I've taken a booking for a private party in a marquee, approx 100+ guests.

I'm just wondering if my couple of DXR15's will cope, or will I need help with the bottom end?


Any advice is much appreciated :)

I wouldn't sweat it. Since I got my 15" Proels, unless it's 200+ young persons, I don't take a sub. I'd expect your Yamahas to cope on their own, especially if there's a button on the back marked Earthquake or similar. :)
For a hundred people, you don't need an excessive amount of speaker capacity.

Yes, Marquees are different, mainly in that sound tends to go everywhere except where you want it. Many a time I've stood behind the rig outside the marquee, and the bass has been pounding, whereas it's nowhere near as pronounced at the other end.

From someone who does that regularly (well, a couple of times a year anyhoo), you'll be fine.

I normally stick the DXR's on the floor (mainly for safety's sake), and they've always been more than capable.

I've never actually put my dxr's on the floor, always had them on tripods, so nice and high.

Would the floor standing them work in a marquee, or would poles be best for projection?

Mine normally go on tripods as well. However, not all marquees have a safe/flat enough floor for this to happen, and those 15's are heavy blighters if they were to topple.

For me, it's just a personal preference for safety reasons. If you're in an environment where it's safe to get them in the air then yes, they will sound better and project further. I've never had a problem with them projecting at floor level personally in a marquee.

As long as theres no speeches or need for microphone work thats fine--by choice those at the front get blasted and those at the back dont get it so loud:D

If theres microphone work definitely have at least one on a stand if safe.

I love my new Ultimate Telescopic Stands as I can hoist even my heavy UL15s to a good height for projection.

Be wary of putting speaker stands on a sprung Marquee dance floor if provided--can be a major problem:daft:

One reason why many of us so love the floor standing twin 15" cabs. One side effect of putting any cabs on the floor is an increase in perceived bass response. They " couple " with the floor. That's one reason why subs with wheels should always have them on the back.

If you're providing PA for speeches, that's a valid point, and you want them as high as possible. You may wish to place them lower when the dancers throng onto the floor during the dancing bit.

For " Wary " read " Absolutely, totally and utterly forbidden under any circumstances whatsoever." In situations of extreme necessity ( and marquees laid out by :muppet:s who haven't a clue ) it can be possible to position tripods on grass at the corners of floors.
