View Full Version : Newbie!
Hey there, would like to say hello and that I'm thankful that I have found this site due to embarking on becoming a mobile DJ. I have got my first booking in July and are seeking all information on what equipment I will need and what music I need to purchase. I'm hoping to get at least 2 gigs per week to bring a wage in and have fun doing it.
I have recently finished a BSc Sound Engineering degree and have been a bedroom Dj for a good 20 years mainly electronic music but love all types of music. I also enjoy dabbling in music production and sound design using the most common DAW's and have enjoyed Studio recording for bands/Artists etc
I look forward to meeting like minded people on here and hope that maybe I can help people out too when I get more experience.
I thought I may as well include some of my current kit to give some kind of idea of what I use......
Pair of Pioneer CDJ800 MKII
Pair of Audio Technica AT-LP120-USB
Behringer DDM4000
Native Instruments Traktor S4 MKII
Focusrite Scarlett 18i20
RME Babyface
Pro Tools 12
Cubase 8.5 Pro
Logic X
Ableton Live 9
Akai APC 40
Akai APC 20
Macbook Pro Retina Early 2015

Hello Anthony.
There will be no shortage of advice, some of which will be conflicting. That's the nature of the beast. Your background is not unlike one or two on here, so I reckon there are some kindred spirits.
Your biggest hurdle will be music, and here's a thread we had earlier (http://www.forum.mobilediscodirectory.co.uk/showthread.php?42377-Music-collection-from-scratch&highlight=mastermix) on the subject.
Pull up a keyboard, and get stuck in.
:welcome2:
Much appreciated and thanks for the info as I have heard different things about licensing to do with the music which I find quite strange due to being a newbie.
I have so many questions Music, Hardware and Venue related so I'll get posting.
Many thanks,
Tony.
You seem to have some decent kit there, but what are you intending to use PA wise, and what plans do you have regarding marketing to attract/find the 2 gigs a week you are planning on? Getting decent kit is important, but it's the easy bit, getting a regular supply of well paid gigs in the early years, is frequently the hardest part. Good luck with the venture.
Hi there I was thinking of a pair of RCF 715 Active MKII's to begin with and then possibly a Sub or 2. Do you think the RCF's will do the job?
I was hoping word of mouth will help with getting gigs as thats how I got my first, but yeah when it comes to advertising I thought I would use social media and the web primarily as I think that is the way the world is going. Whenever I want something the first thing I do is fire up Google and thats what my niece did to book her DJ for her 18th birthday party. Basically I will try to use the cheapest forms of advertising to begin with which to me is the internet. If I were making enough money maybe I would try local newspapers, directories etc
To be honest though I am new to every aspect of the mobile DJ thing, I can produce and mix music and have a good ear for good tunes however playing at disco's is new to me. I see people doing it though and I check out their gig logs/recordings/mixes and feel confident I could do it to the same standards and if they are getting gigs I feel I may as well try myself as I have half the equipment already for personal use.

I think the RCF 715 Active MKII's would be a great choice if you have the budget, and I doubt you would need subs with them unless you are getting some pretty big gigs.
I wouldn't rely on newspaper ads for work, they've not produced the goods for years, Facebook and Google are the way forward but Google can take quite a time to get up the rankings so the sooner you start with that the better. Make sure you get a 'reactive 'site, i.e. one that displays your site correctly across the various potable media devices, there are a few people here who can advise you on this far better than I can.

If you're planning on getting subs further on down the line, I'd buy the 712's. They sound great on their own, have enough bass and will save you a little money. :)

Thanks for that mate! I'm intrigued when comparing the 712's with the 715's as the only difference I can see apart from the dimensions and weight is 1dB SPL. They both have the same frequency response therefore I need to see if I can demo these against each other in a store somewhere.

Yeah its great I've found this place as I have my first booking in July and I feel like the time is closing in fast. I still have to buy my music, PA, lighting and Booth/Stand. I have so many questions and are wondering where to ask them, can I ask in this thread or do I need to go in to the respective sub forums?

Posting them in the sub forums will usually get the best response, and also helps other people who may be looking for help there.

Best place I've ever been to for side-by-side comparisons is RSD music. Bit of a drive, but worth the journey.
Ok so I'm back after days of research over the last few weeks and have 3 weeks to get everything sorted!
I thought I would carry on posting and asking questions in this thread to hopefully get some answers quicker and also help any other newbies when they first starting out, I hope this is ok.
I thought maybe to try and buy the whole lot from one place to try an achieve some kind of discount (the sales guy said its best to do it this way) however I'm still shopping and need some help, mainly with the lighting I think.
Music wise I have decided to purchase plenty of second hand Now this is music compilation albums as I feel there are plenty of great tunes for an 18th Birthday party and the Now this is Disco for some old classics and party tunes. I will also purchase some digital downloads for some new tunes for the kids, things that are currently being played on the radio, some Disney Frozen for the very young, any other tracks I think were quite big over the last few years and some classics for the older people/parents etc. I may also try downloading any requests on the night if I haven't got them, however I think this is risky if I haven't checked/heard them first incase the music becomes corrupted whilst downloading. I know this is probably unlikely but there is a slight chance.
I will be using my Macbook with the Native Instruments S4 for digital downloads to an external hard drive and my Pioneer CDJ's routed through the S4 for the CD's therefore this way I will not need to purchase the weird Pro Dub License. I will also take my other Sony VAIO laptop as a backup and also a back up on my Samsung galaxy tablet should both of my computers fail. All of these will be routed through a Soundcraft Compact 4 mixer which will be outputted to a pair of Yamaha DXR15 active PA speakers. These speakers will be placed on some Gorilla PA Speaker stands although I'm also looking at some Hydraulic speaker stands.
I have decided to go with a Gorilla GDS-5 Twin Bar 4ft Disco Booth that comes with a carpeted shelf and an Equinox Foldable DJ Screen White (Bag Included). Im thinking all of my lighting can go above me on the T-Bar across the top however I'm getting kind of stuck and are wondering whether I should buy everything DMX and go down that route? I am thinking of buying lights in pairs (I'm a complete novice) and I will list what I have been looking at so far considering around my £300-400 Budget....
American DJ Micro Burst
American DJ Vertigo HEX LED
Equinox Interceptor
American DJ Tri Gem LED
Cameo STORM - 3 in 1 lighting effect
Equinox Triclops LED
Atmotech VS400 Smoke Machine
QTX QTFX-B3 Mega Bubble Machine
Will I need any of my stuff PAT tested as its all brand new except my Soundcraft Mixer and Pair of Pioneer CDJ's?
Public Liability Insurance I have found through here and thinking of the UK's Cheapest DJ PLI at just £29.99 from MOBILE DJ NETWORK.
My first gig isn't going to be massive and I'll try and find a way of posting a picture of the venue however I would really appreciate some help with this as I don't want to disappoint my client. If I have missed anything please don't hesitate and tell me off!
Cheers!

Yes you should really get even new stuff tested. One or 2 members here have had brand new gear put through its PAT paces & found it to fail on things like earthing - if I remember right one fix was to de-lid the unit, undo a bolt & scrape some paint off the inside of the case to make better contact.
I didn't buy all my gear in pairs & I ended up regretting it later. Nearly everybody here favours symmetry - and I suspect your public will too. It's fine only having one of something if it's in the middle. There are probably some exceptions to this but that's a rule of thumb :)
As for whether to bother with DMX or not - pretty much every fixture these days has it, even the mega dirt cheap & nasty Chinese effects on Ebay. Buy DMX capable lights where you can, then you'll have the luxury of commanding them with it further down the line.
Far & away my wisest lighting purchase to date has been my Equinox Gigabar - I can't go anywhere without it. I wouldn't advise anybody tries to rely on dotty LED lights for illuminating a venue. Some places get really very dark when the lights are off & dots just aren't enough IMHO. you could do much worse than take a peek at the Chauvet WashFX. It's got a face even its mother doesn't love, but boy is it ever a bright little thing.
Thanks Juski, I'll look in to getting some PAT testing done, hopefully it wont be too expensive!

Too many cheap lights there doing the same thing.
Get a couple of really good lights.
Just having 1 x Chauvet Wash FX and 1 x ADJ Quad Phase HP will outperform all of that.
Don't get a bubble machine unless you're doing kids parties, and the smoke machine - I've used mine twice in twelve months. Very few venues allow it. So if money is tight, drop it.
Here's my big tip: you can easily add further lights down the road. But sound system is much harder - you end up just replacing it. So spend as much as possible on sound, with the aim to not need to replace it for 3 years, knowing that you can easily grow the light show later on. That will save you so much money.
Thanks so much for the help guys as I really need and appreciate it. Its 3 weeks to my first gig and I'm kind of brickin it haha.
I will check out those lights, I think my budget for lights to start is around £300-400. I was thinking of getting a DMX buddy and DMX lighting, what do you think?

I wasn't going to buy all of those lights, they were just the ones I had been looking at. I'm really appreciating the help with this though as I'm a complete novice and could do with help choosing the correct stuff.
I have looked at the lights you mentioned and like them, I also looked at the Chauvet Cubix 2.0 Moonflower Lighting Effect which kind of interested me too as I like the patterns it creates, what do you think?
Obviously I don't want to purchase a load of lights that do the same thing so I think I'm going to spend the afternoon researching lights as I'm seeing different names like wash, moon-flower, scanners etc and don't understand what they all mean.
In the meantime though I know you said the 2 you suggested would outperform all of the lights I listed but will a couple of lights be enough?
Thanks again for your help so far!

Surprised that nobody has mentioned this (https://www.djkit.com/chauvet/chauvet-gig-bar-20.html?cat=288), bearing in mind so many folk on this forum were banging on about it last year.
Personally, I hate the thing with a passion BUT I think that it could prove to be ideal as a 'My First Lightshow' thing.
And on the other end of the 'smoke machine' comment, I use my haze machine at most of my gigs. Each venue is different, but I will echo Gavin's sentiments on spending more on sound than lights. Clients notice crap lighting, and they notice uh-mazing lighting. Anything in between goes largely unnoticed.

Sound has always been at the forefront of my purchase wishlist and have decided to go with the Yamaha DXR15's as thats all my budget allows is around £1000. I hear these are enough for most small type of gigs around 250 people I think. I thought I would purchase the subs to go with them at a later date. The speakers come with a 7 year warranty so I thought they are also a safe option and should last me at least the 7 years. What do you think?

All good advice, especially smoke and bubbles. Only add them later if you think they're a worthwhile purchase

Sorry, no idea. However, if you buy a couple of good lights to start with, you won't need to look into DMX for a while. Let's trot out a couple from me.
Compact Teutonic powerbar. (http://www.thomann.de/gb/stairville_clb4_compact_led_bar_4_tripar.htm) Will light up any venue, and many of us, self included, are happy to do gigs with no more than this.
All-in-one. (http://www.djanddiscostuff.com/lighting-c1/led-lighting-effects-c4/stinger-ii-led-lighting-effect-p2903/s3017?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=american-dj-stinger-ii-led-lighting-effect&utm_campaign=product%2Blisting%2Bads&gclid=CjwKEAjwqdi7BRCL6Zmjk5-rsTwSJABmrVab_K21akEBITD7ZacfIJr5hh4bpY6tssUNCiw8r gAGlBoCffzw_wcB), or the latest model Chauvet Swarm 5. Five colour LEDs, strobe and laser in one box. The new models are better featured than the old ones. The significant downside is that these are a little manic at times, and more suited to eighteen year olds and under, I feel. My rig for anything 13-18 is likely to be two of these and an LED wash light.

Correctamundo. Until the lights go down, it's one of the ugliest fixtures I've ever seen. Darken the room, and switch it on, and the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. I've used one, and it does what it says on the tin. In effect, it's a Swarm and a Powerbar in one, but less powerful. Fabulous piece of kit to have for quick set up gigs. It's probably not the answer, but it's certainly an answer.

.
Pe7e's absolutely correct.
If you need subs with those cabs, you'l be playing to over 300 people, I'd say. That's a big gig. Personally I'm happy to do many functions for 100-150 with a pair of 12" speakers of lesser grade than the Yamahas, and with 15" I can do much bigger/livelier ones.
I have subs, but they don't go out every gig. 15" Yamahas will do all you need for a very very long time. The only proviso, ( and I think with cabs of that quality, even this is debatable ) is that if you were doing a lot of speech based functions, twelves would be preferable. That's splitting hairs, really.
Great feedback guys, much appreciated......
One thing that I am wondering about is how loud do you know what to play at? May seem like a silly question but I don't want to get told off haha. Do you use a SPL meter or something or do you just judge it with your trusty ears?

So many possible answers, so few of them serious or helpful..
Let's settle for remembering that some venues nowadays have noise issues, so loosening Aunty Mabel's dentures at fifty paces shouldn't be our main aim. Quieter is usually better than louder, depending on the function and the audience.
You can get apps for most phones to show you decibel level, but on its own that's not the whole story, just a guide.
Benny Smyth

Good rule of thumb is if you can hear them talking, it's too quiet. If they're on the dancefloor and you spot that they have to shout at each other to communicate, it's too loud.
Venues will let you know if it's too loud. They won't give you both barrels at the first prompt (unless you really are taking the mick), so you won't be told off. Just smile, apologise and dial it back a bit.
Or, at least, pretend to do the latter. ;)
Use your ears. Don't use numbers on a device.
Thanks again guys, much appreciate the advice to help me with my first gig as its quite daunting doing it on my own.
I've been finding out other stuff on Youtube and various sites today especially with the lighting however I definitely need more help choosing some. I have come across the Mega TRIPAR Profile Plus which seem like a good deal; still more research to do though as still feeling unsure. If its ok I'll post a pic up of the venue somehow and see what anyone thinks of my light selection.

Excellent piece of kit, but:
1) For best effect, you'll need four.
2) Also, a controller.
3) On an overhead, you'll have a lot of wires in view
4) As suggested earlier, a Powerbar of whatever nationality will cost less, have a controller built in, come with its own tripod, have no wires showing, and be cheaper.
Thanks Excalibur, I haven't ruled out the power-bar however I was thinking of using a couple of the Mega TRIPAR Profile Plus. One each side of the DJ booth on the floor as uplighting as I'm thinking of purchasing the Gorilla GDS-5 Twin Bar 4ft Disco Booth with Disco Screen & Shelf.

It's a viable option. Please take it as read that all the members will advise you to go for an Ultimax stand, cos it's better. It is, but the Gorilla should work fine if you take care.
Re lighting the screen, your biggest problem is illuminating all the screen, not just pockets of it. I'md, suggest battens, but you'd need the tape measure out first, to see how they'd fit. Personally, from what I've seen ( not used, I don't have a screen ) I rate the Acme Mirrage very highly for this.
There are many options, most of which will work. Personal taste is going to come into it, I've been in a DJ shop today, and it's clear that if the owner and I were given a lighting/visual task to do, we'd go about it in very different ways. There's no right or wrong, but hopefully we can shorten the learning process for you, and save you spending money on stuff that doesn't do what you want.
Le bt's see what other folk say, cos I feel I'm on my soapbox at the moment.:)

FWIW don't use tripars to illuminate a booth. You'll have 2 hotspots & the lighting will be very uneven. I get really good coverage with my WashFX if I can get it far back enough - Mike at Phase One in Darlington was who demonstrated to me why I'd be better off with the washfx than a couple of pars & was he ever right - top bloke :D

My advice would be to get yourself a Deckstand booth V2 if the budget allows, (they're not cheap) 2nd choice would be an Ultimax, they're pretty much bullet proof but spares are readily available if you do manage to damage or lose a part. After that it's up to you really, I can't recommend the Gorilla stand since I've never owned or used one, but I've not heard any negative comments about them either.

Thanks for that Benny as I have bought a dodgy DJ stand before which had to go back however I will purchase it this week and set it up to see if its going to do the job. Its had good reviews on Amazon so are hoping it will be ok. The guy in that video looked like he had overloaded the bar at the top plus he never had any decks on it to counter the weight although it may have still been a dodgy stand and hopefully the company learnt from their mistakes and made something that has sufficient support and is sturdy. After the great feedback I've received so far on the lighting its looking like I wont be purchasing too many fixtures and the few I do buy will most probably be quite up to date and compact.

The Chauvet Wash FX has gone in my basket after seeing a video on youtube. I was quite impressed on how such a small light can light up a large venue and I also like your idea of not having too many fixtures however I would like a pair of fixtures that provide interesting beams of light on to the dancefloor. I couldn't find that much on the ADJ Quad Phase HP and what I saw in the demo on youtube it was ok but didn't look interesting enough for me at the price point. I have been looking at the.........
Chauvet Circus 2.0 IRC
American DJ Revo 4 IR
Chauvet Swarm 5 FX
For example if I had and a pair of Chauvet Circus 2.0 IRC's or Swarms and the Revo 4 IR in the middle how would you think this would look? Also Would I still need the Chauvet Wash FX to light up the rest of the room as the rest of the lighting is mainly for the dance floor?
I was thinking of getting the ADJ myDMX Buddy to control the fixtures however I'm still unsure how to connect a MIDI device as I know you have to purchase a software upgrade but I cannot seem to find it.; I could use My Akai APC 20 as a DMX controller
Thanks for your help so far!

Personally, I detest Revos with all of my being. I've worked with them loads of times & they do my :Censored: head in!!!!!!! I've tried to think of a more naff light & I can't. I even prefer £12 ebay jellydome type things to Revos. Yeah they're room fillers alright - they fill the room with ever pulsating, hypnotising concentric circles of dots. I'll see if I can dig out a video clip of why I hate them so.
Here:

Even in S2L mode they'll do something like that during a slow dance - my frustration was I couldn't turn the sods off without turning all the lights off.
Nasty, nasty music mixing in that vid. I'd only been back into DJing for about 3 months or so then.
The swirlish things you can sometimes see in the video are from an ACME Mirrage - a much underrated fixture. As filling as a revo, but nothing like as naff IMHO.
Juski mate thanks for that as its very helpful. Just wondering how high are those lights?
Maybe I need to think about some lighting for the slow dances as I forgot about that tbh. I'm thinking I could control the Chauvet wash FX with dmx and have some type of low light with a jelly dome or derby? Does this sound correct?

They're pretty high. The lighting was above me on the ceiling, and I was up on a balcony.
Ok Guys I think I have made up my mind so here goes!
Yamaha DXR15 Active Speakers
Gorilla Speaker stands
Atmotech VS400 Smoke Machine With 1 Litre Standard Smoke Fluid
Gorilla GDS-5 Twin Bar 4ft Disco Booth with 4 Panel Lime Light Foldable Disco Lighting Screen
For the lighting above my head on the T bar I have chosen:
Chauvet Wash FX for the Middle, also the ADJ Starburst for the middle.
2 x Chauvet circus 2.0 IRC (1 either side of the Starburst and Wash fx)
For the Lime Light Foldable Disco Lighting Screen:
Kam Moonglow DMX V2
For the lighting control I have chosen the ADJ My DMX Buddy
All the IEC extensions and DMX cables
What do you think guys?
