Hi signing in from MEXICO on a few weeks hols.

Does anyone have experience of using their TRADE IN YOUR USED EQUIPMENT facility?

I'm looking to buy a powered Sub and trade in my Peavey Subs and pro 15s.

I wondered if they offered peanuts. ?

The problem with second had gear is knowing just how old it is and how much it has been used.
Can you believe the seller when he says hardly used ?

I have bought second stuff off ebay and ended up with rubbish.
Disco dual CD player lasted 2 gigs.
Bought rope lights and half of them didn't light up.
Cost a fortune to send them back for a refund.

Maybe I was just unlucky ?

To make it clear the item is headed NEW rather than USED on the why buy new site so should be a warranty.

My main question is their trading in your old equipment facility which appeals as I have some speakers in perfect working order to move out my house.

Just wondered if they are like the car buyers on the TV who I'm told offer silly low money to trade goods in.

in which case I won't bother.

I can ask when I get back from hols but any advance information would be useful.

I'm not surprised over used e bay items.

Yes you have I think. 90% my kit is second hand pretty much and I have bought so many cheeky little deals over the years. I have hardly ever been ripped off or got sent items that were not as described. The only thing i have bought is a projector as you can't buy decent ones SH or from Chinese imports. :)

I think it just requires the right nose to suss out the muppets, and only buy from proper sellers. Having said that I got my first con last month in god knows how many thousands of transactions. Bought a ridiculously cheap SSD and paid via bank transfer. Never again!!! Lost the money. I have their address and plan to visit them at some point in the next year. :mad:

Looking at the prices for retail i would say their trade in prices are also a bit low, but it would depend on the item and also the ease of the transaction.

Obviously they are looking to make a profit on equipment traded in so I'm not expecting much, but would be useful to know.

I'm not sure if I can be bothered with e bay and there's tons of Peavey speakers for sale on there.

I swear by WBN, most of their stuff is actually ex display stock, so in essence new, plus their second hand stuff has been checked over & in a lot of cases reconditioned & all comes with a warranty.

HOWEVER His question was about trading his kit in with them. I'm guessing they'll be something along the lines of We Buy Any Car & the money offered will be marginally below the market rate for second hand kit, so they can make a profit on it.

Rang today to find the item I looked at in Mexico---- it wasnt including the Vodka and Tonic in Mexico---so 20per cent more and out my budget.:daft:

Re the trade ins--they dont take passive speakers so thats not much use to me unfortunately.

I read the OP and I DO have experience in attempting to trade things in to them.

My advice....advertise it on a Facebook group or fleabay. DO NOT trade it to WBN if you want a sensible price (this is my own personal experience....others may vary)

A lot of my gear came from them (I used to visit their showroom in Colchester quite regularly until I tried to trade something in which I'd purchased from them).

I had a Yamaha DXS118 which was 9 months old (cost something like £750 new from WBN) and they offered me £200 (I had the box, the packaging, the manuals, in fact it was in mint condition....and it had been used a couple of times - it was just too damned heavy and unwieldy to lift without an assistant

I put it on the MDJN FB group for £500 and it went within about 2 minutes (to none other than our very own Ian Scott!). OK....it cost me in the end because I ended up "trading" it for 2 DXS12's and 100 pieces of folding paper which was MORE than worth it in my case when coupled with the absolutely awesome DXR8's (but that's another story which Peter can't wait to hear when I bring them to the next Coalville meetup).

Moral of the story.....they will offer the absolute minimum they can get away with.

As much as I will happily recommend them for buying from....you can get a lot more money for second hand kit by selling elsewhere ;)

Thanks for that, obviously they have to make a profit but on a relatively modern item ( powered speaker) in good nick you might expect something a bit better price wise--they won't take anything that's older like my passive speakers.

So I'm still looking for a punchy 15 inch powere sub---anyone?

When they ultimately sell that piece of kit on as second hand, they have to charge VAT on the sale, so that VAT goes straight to the taxman without any chance of recovering any of it back to the purchase.

So they will base their net profit on VAT exclusive amounts before having to add HMRC's 20% for resale.

Had they bought the kit from their wholesaler/manufacturer, the would have a VAT invoice to support that and been able to reclaim 1/6th of the purchase price back from HMRC.

So, it is always likely that you can get a better price selling privately as you'll be VAT free against a retailer selling second hand whose price will be VAT inclusive

Actually that is not true
If you are a trader in second hand items you only pay VAT on the difference between the price you paid and the price you sold (less any costs incurred such as repair/refurbishment) not on the full sale value, even if you bought the item from a private owner who is obviously not going to be VAT registered.

I know this for a fact as I used to own a computer shop and regularly sold second hand items.
