Hello Guys
Would a pair of these be any good for small party's less than 100 people on there own without a sub?
Will they produce adequate bass?
Small back of pub type rooms?
Thanks

Yes and no.
I think they'll do a job, but they won't produce enough bass.

Ask Wayne. :) Logically, no. But...........
They're amazing little blighters, and I wouldn't bet against it. I ran a 12" Alto sub and two 10" Alto tops for 120 youngish people, and I reckon that number would be the maximum I'd want to use them for. Two 12" LD tops were cruising that number in a venue three times the size.
Not enough bass, Benny? Coalville suggests that's a moot point.

I don't think that they do. They are very impressive, and fantastically powerful for their size (as are my 408s) but they don't produce enough bass on their own.

You rang?
Hmmm....my personal opinion being the proud owner of a pair of these timorous wee beasties would be no....unless you've got them sat directly on a wooden floor or the stage (and to be honest they're going to be a trip hazard then). Whilst they do produce quite a bit of bass, I personally wouldn't want to run with those alone, it's just not low or punchy enough.
If you wanted to rely on just a pair of tops on their own, look towards the 10" or even better the 12" versions. Slightly heavier and bigger but not a lot in the price in the grand scheme of things.
Failing that, (and I'll get shot for this), you could add a lightweight QTX15" sub for under £100 to sit under the booth which will give more than enough boom to back up the 8" tops. :sofa:

Other low cost, low weight subs are available. ;) They sound amazing over a 15" Alto, and I'd be desperately keen to see whether downsizing to the 12" had a big effect.
Hmmm, I foresee a lot of pick'n'mix between Wayne's Yamahas, and my Altos. How I shall laugh if my Alto sub whups his Yamaha. :)

Thanks for the reply's
I am a bit stuck as a small child switched the power on and off while i was playing Saturday and knocked one of my alto black 15"s out,it lights up and has a signal but no sound!
Anyway i was thinking i needed a smaller set up so i was going to buy the Yamaha's however although the reviews are great the consensus is not enough bass without a sub so back to the drawing board!
Thanks

Considering some people here rock 15" or 18" active subs in pairs, yes the DXR8s on their own may not produce 'enough' bass. If you were to slim your number down from 100 to 60.. then yes maybe they'd do well without bins.
10" tops without subs is probably as small as I would go for 'up to 100' people, and I say that advisedly - not all 10" tops are alike.
I got by without a bass bin for quite a while. It was 'okay' with my Mackies (SRM450) and 'acceptable' with my Alto 15"s but since adding the bin I won't be going back to not using it if I can possibly help it.

I do have 15" tops and 18" subs however they are total overkill for about half of the gigs i do then there is the matter of space too which can be tiny in some venues.
I am now leaning towards a pair if these:

As a traditionalist, 15"subs and 12" tops could be regarded as the standard. I now use 15" cabs on their own for very many gigs, this losing the subs.
However, modern day systems are beginning to deliver far more performance than they have a right to. Wayne is in raptures over a 12" sub/ 8" tops rig, and I keep looking at the Maui5 with interest.
I'm doing a few lately with one 12" sub and 10" tops.
Probably the least used cans are my best ones, 12" wooden cabs.
It's a funny old world. :)

I'd definitely prefer to go out with a 12" sub and 8" tops over just 15" tops.
Not sure I'd want to go out with a Maui 5 for anything other than background music - and even then I prefer to use smaller tops.

Funny enough I'm the same these days.
The 8/12 combo goes out to the majority of gigs now with the DXR15's only really seeing the light of day when I go out with the retro light screens (they just look better on the floor like how we used to do it)

Twelve / eight versus fifteen, I can understand your logic, but feel it would depend on venue, gig and audience. An eighteenth or twenty first for young folk and it's fifteens every time. An older audience and/or speech based gig, and the little ones win hands down.
The Maui 5 just seems to impress everyone who uses it. Perhaps that's because they don't expect it to fill Wembley stadium and use it accordingly, who knows?

I was thinking of getting the Evox 8 but I'm starting to think I will go for Yamaha DXR10 with a pair of RCF 702 subs any thoughts ?

My primary sound system choice are my RCF 408 tops with a pair of 905 subs. I just like the sound of that combo.
But when I want a bit more oomph (one of those technical phrases, that) or I'm at a gig where subs can't be used due to access issues, I swap out the 408s for my 712s.

18th/21st, I'd be wanting some subs under those 15" speakers too. I wouldn't want to rock up with just a pair of 15" speakers to that!

All depends on the quality and money,i use a pair of Nexo 15 inch and will blow away most of the stuff mentioned but they cost a lot of money.

I wouldn't want to now either but I have done in the past. It was bearable but not what I'd have preferred. Did anybody complain? No. Did anybody ask for it to be turned up? No. Did most people seem to enjoy themselves anyway? YES! The only time my pa without a bin has ever really struggled though was a prom with 130 teenagers. That was easily the biggest dancefloor I've had to play with in years too though.
A lot of discos (and bands) are simply too damn loud all the time. Me, I play to the venue & cicumstances. My sub doesn't mean I can go louder.. It just makes me sound much better.

Totally agree.
It's not about volume, it's about how it sounds. Many people I perform to are chatting whilst on the dancefloor without having to shout in to each others ears.
I've pulled back the treble a lot more recently - the "perceived loudness" is much lower, but is sounds far better, letting the sub cut through better.
I can't imagine doing a gig without a sub - that punch makes up most of the sound without needing to be "loud" and I've never managed to achieve that from speaker tops alone.

I have just bought a cheap Sub-- Alto 15 with that in mind and to see how it pans out.
I dont need quick turnround kit these days so wouldnt mind a bit more bass for my own pleasure!
As you say no one ever complains about the sound --only the music

If I was determined to use subs, the tops wouldn't be 15" though, they'd be 12" at most. That's the whole point. I've never felt anything was lacking with just the fifteens. I tailor my PA according to what's needed.

Fair point - the 12" will sound much better.
Hence why I don't own any 15" speakers :)
