View Full Version : How do you get motivated...

...when you've had a few weeks off?

I know I'll be fine when it comes to time to press play, but I'm having a bit of an "oh god I've got to DJ tonight" moment. Aside from a Steampunk event (which really is more of a weekend away than work as far as I'm concerned), I haven't DJed in a month & find myself seriously lacking motivation.

What do you do to get back into the right frame of mind when coming off a break?

Unfortunately, rule 19 dictates that I cannot disclose what I do to get motivated. :p

It's like going back to work at a 'proper job' after coming back from holiday. I don't think that there is a hard and fast way of getting motivated in such a situation - I tend to just get in the groove as I'm loading the van.

It's bloody hard isn't it Steve.
It's like that period after Christmas when you've done lots of nights in the month and things die down a bit afterwards.

I'd possibly get motivated if I was looking forward to playing some new tunes that I hadn't had a chance to yet.
Other than that, 2 things - 1. I'd listen to some of the tracks I'll be playing at my next gig and 2.......I don't know!!??

Not much help eh!??

Look around at the jobs that people do that can't enjoy their jobs. No disrespect to the jobs - but no one can get excited about being a bin man, getting up that early in the morning, in all weather.

When you put it in perspective, you realise how lucky you are.

Then think about all the young up and coming DJs who will be wanting your work and that should help provide the motivation to want to create an amazing night :)

Equally, once you've done the first couple, you'll quickly get back in to your routine :)

Maybe I haven't been back long enough (5 years this year), but I find myself champing at the bit to get going most weeks (I say most because there's ALWAYS going to be the one that you know isn't going to be the sort of gig you're hoping for).

I'm not out until Sunday this week (turned down plenty of stuff for Saturday but needed to be fresh for the wedding I've got.....fireworks with coordinated music, barn dancing, live acoustic set in the orchard outside the marquee....it's going to be one of those special ones). No motivation needed :)

Think--this gig helps pay for a Holiday.

With loads of sunshine AND NO RAIN.

I'm getting seriously cheesed off with weather here.

Go for it Steve:D:D:D

No help at all Steve, sorry. I guess the facile answer is like you said, to stand in front of the play button. My last gig was as much of a pleasure as a job, and I'm just coming back from Norfolk, all yee-hawed out. There's only so many times you can listen to certain country standards. Eight dofferent acts meant some classics were on a very heavy rotation. Fields of Athenry and Silver Wings will not be pn Saturday's playlist. ;)

A few weeks off? Chance would be a fine thing. But, there are some gigs I find I have to dig to motivate myself for. Like tonight's murder mystery where the form is typically that come disco time half the punters put their coats on & leave as they'd always planned to.

Try to look at the positives & keep an open mind. I'd say think about the money, but we should all still be in this for more than that.

Working full time at the day job, the DJing still feels a bit like the hobby that pays so never really struggled for motivation. I am a bit more selective about what I take on but pressing the play button usually does the trick.

To be honest it's when I've had a break I look forward to Djing, it's when you're doing another three day 18 hour working day like it is at the moment I struggle to get up for it.

Cue some white haired old Yorkie pouring scorn on your efforts by telling you that when he was your age he worked twenty-five hours a day, eight days a week. :D:D

And pay 6d to t'mill owner for the privilege of doing so. If you tell the young people today, they'll never believe you.
