In need of ideas

OK - I'm pretty happy with my various set ups before we get too deep into this one....

However, I need to make a small change. I currently run a pair of ADJ Jaguar MSD250's which I absolutely love (they're a lighting show all on their own don't cha know), but my gawd they're heavy as was proven last night trying to move them up a grassy knoll in the rain to the van.

So, I'm after something similar, and open to ideas.

They need to be lamps as opposed to LED, just due to the brightness factor (unless anyone's invented something on a par with a 250w halide in LED format yet). They also need to be barrels as opposed to the flat wobbly mirror thingy's.

The only other requirements, must have color and gobo wheels inside, oh and obviously DMX compatible.

A nicety although not a requirement would be for the on-board controls to be digital rather than dip-switches (I've broken a couple of pegs on the MSD's already :( )

Budget - let's see what comes up. I've not spent much on kit this year and I'm open to ideas.

In all honesty, I'd like a Martin EFX 500, but just smaller, lighter, and with an LED source, though to be fair just the first two would be enough, cos lamp life on those was phenomenal.

60w LED - I'm really impressed with its brightness.

Replaceable gobos which to me gives it an edge over a Wizard style light, and much smaller/lighter.

I've been really impressed with them - and at £400 each, far cheaper than a Wizard - and no worries about bulbs blowing.

Okaaaaayyyy.....

A couple of days ago I took the plunge. I've now got a pair of the Intimidator 305 barrels (reluctantly as I LUUURVE lamps). DJKit were offering them on a 10 month interest free deal...what's not to like? :daft:

Oh My God!!!!! How bright are they? They're on a PAR with the 250 watt lamps for starters.

So a pair has cost me a shade more than a single Wizard (which will still go out on the road from time to time). These bad boys really, REALLY fit the bill though - I can't believe an LED fixture is so bright :). And don't even get me started on the weight of them. I don't need to look like Sly Stallone anymore to lug them up onto poles.

PLUS - there's no cool down time for them. In a lot of the venues I work in, get out time is at a premium so not having to wait until the lamp side of the fixture doesn't remove my fingerprints is a big bonus.

I've already DMX'd them to do what I need (they seem a little crazy without). Next step....find a 5v power out in them and make them wireless.....dream setup :)

They do go like the clappers when on sound to light so, unless you can DMX them down, I prefer to use mine on Auto settings and control the speed with the remote.

These are the new Wizard effect.

Mine arrived last Tuesday and had their first outing at a wedding on Saturday just gone. All I can say is....."WOW"!
They're equally as bright as a 250w lamp, they're responsive to DMX (they really do move fast when needed!), and I'm told (but haven't actually looked into this) that the Gobos are replaceable.

They're also a LOT lighter (even Peter would be able to hoist these onto an overhead without assistance :sofa:)

I don't do anything too fancy DMX-wise (I really don't have that much time on my hands and the dear wife gets fed up of having bright lights shone in her face whilst she's watching Holby City), but on a simple DMX program, they've just made my Wizards redundant

They're out again this weekend in a much bigger and darker venue...I can't wait to see what they look like. I don't think I'm going to be disappointed

I not long sold a pair of the older 300 barrels and they were stupid bright.

Last summer I had the dimmed to about 30% in a big marquee during the day time and you could still see them on the far walls.

Peter could lift the Samurai barrels he had, but couldn't make them do anything useful. :( Perhaps this DMX voodoo is an anwer. :confused:

I have the Obey 70 too and I've managed to do a few things with it but mainly simple colour changing for live music nights.

The problem is, the built in programs in a lot of the new lights are so damned good, you can't really improve on them.
OK, the 305's needed slowing down and I've done that, but basically the movement is the same as the pre-programmed stuff.

The main reasons I use DMX (and it's not fancy stuff I'm doing)

Colour wash for wedding background (so just literally pars/battens set on a static colour or fade depending on what Bridey wants)
First dance (slightly more subtle and a quick change to a spotlight/open white slow gobo)
Party mode where the overhead pars follow some sort of pattern (which is replicated by the LOVE letters if they're on the road with me)
Strobe mode on the pars


The main benefit to me was clicking a mouse to change all of the lights in one go rather than fiddling with half a dozen IRCs :o

Tried MyDMX when it first came out and couldn't get used to it. I know its all moved on in leaps and bounds now and I could control stuff via my iPad or iPhone if I wanted to but I just prefer using the OBEY 70 (at the moment). When I move I'll have around 6 weeks to get the house sorted and overhaul my equipment, tidy it up and possibly learn new stuff.
