THE DJ DANCE - is there a cure?

As you'll see when I post my gig log video er.. I do 'the DJ dance' thing. I just can't help it. Only now though, after seeing video of myself doing it do I realise why some people find it amusing. Maybe not quite to the point of being hilarious (each to their own) but it makes me cringe a bit. This is the thing though, when the crowd are having fun, I have fun, and then I get into the DJ groove.. which results in my little jiggle about as I DJ.

Do you do a 'DJ dance' while you're working, and how do you feel about it? I'd honestly never videoed myself DJing til last night and oh boy..

Usually have a jig to some of the classic 90`s anthem`s , or serious cheese songs.

I thought about this at tonight's gig... I'm not sure I that I do dance, more I pace around trying to keep my tired feet active. I do sing along quietly though often enough.

I was thinking about this very thread last night as I stood there nodding, drumming and giving it a little movement.
I wouldn't call it 'dancing', I'd never even think about daring to call it 'dancing' as it's just not me. I don't do it, never have but for some reason when I am getting into what I am doing I will move about a bit.

One thing I always do (which I really should stop doing as I am always seen and feel a bit silly when that happens) is the drumming. I am constantly doing it, especially to the Indie stuff.

It's funny actually because I'd never even sat behind a kit before and did it last year during a band practice, asking if I could have a go.
Our drummer at the time said I was a natural!

It's definitely not full on dancing. Just involuntary movements related to the task of doing things on the beat or just being engrossed in the beat. My actual dancing would be much more embarrassing I think.

I suffer from a condition called DJ's leg. It means using my right foot and leg to keep time with the track playing while beat matching the next track on the headphones.

Apparently there is no cure.

I get stuck in and don't really care.

I do a bit of air drumming, shooting the clouds, mix out toward the crowd, clapping, singing along and whatever else takes my fancy.

I played in bands for years and trained myself to do anything but stare at my feet or the fretboard and DJing is the same.


There's no shame in it and it's fairly common that my feedback mentions it was good to see me enjoying myself along with the guests...

We had a DJ who sang through the mic to most songs.
He sounded dreadful but no one had the heart to tell him.

If there is one thing worse than someone who cant sing its someone who cant sing but are convinced they can.

I do that, but with the mic turned off. The important this is to look as though you are enjoying yourself (even when you're not).

I record the output of the desk separately then combine it with camcorder audio in post. I don't record video continuously so have to do jiggery pokery to locate the corresponding audio. Takes a while but well worth it.

It's the number one thing that bugs me about a lot of other people's disco videos.. really poor sound. Since adding my bass bin all my phone puts on the soundtrack is distorted mush.
