I suspect this forum does not allow political discussion?

So without going into the obvious reasons of why Mrs Dicky and Myself strongly feel we need to protect our ability (and indeed desire) to go and live somewhere else........ I came across this yesterday and it appears I am Irish!

Basically Mrs Dicky's maternal grandfather was born near Dublin though he moved to, and married in, England and her mother was born here

Now it appears apparently my wife has dual nationality by descent..... and as I have been married to her (not just cohabiting) for the last 32 years it appears I have dual nationality by Marriage!

Has anyone else ever even heard of this or can confirm this is definitely the case?

Having discovered we are almost certainly Irish, we were confident enough to celebrate with a few Guinness last night. Today I have a bit of a head ache for some inexplicable reason........ but hopefully we will have the paperwork for our new Irish (EU) passports application ready to send in next week.

Should We be saying CHEERS already?

As far as I'm aware, you are indeed correct. My dad was an Irish man so I'm also entitled to dual nationality.

I've always wanted to move to Spain at some point after spending 7 months in Ibiza back in 2009. I was also contemplating doing what you're doing after the vote to keep my options open.

Cheers Benny

That is indeed our plan at some point. According to the info My wife is 100% Irish citizen anyway so at least she can own a property, run a business or open a bank account somewhere in the sun even if my claim is more indirect..

It's nice to discover have options available, I hope everyone will find a way if they want :)

This is a really wierd feeling actually to find I have dual nationaility - I suspect it's a bit like finding you have a brother/sister/relative etc you never knew you had!

You and me both, Benny lad, you and me both.

Cue the joke: An Irishman and a Spaniard are discussing the meaning of the word manyana ( please excuse the missing tilde, I'm on the tablet(s) )

"Ah yes " says the Irishman, " but in Ireland we don't have a word that conveys the same sense of urgency ". :coat:

Mod note: Quite correct lads, no political discussion, so tread carefully, I'm watching. :)

If my wife is Polish would i be able to get a polish passport??
I would assume no, but in Poland anything is possible with the right bribe. ;)

My son is also a polish citizen (albeit he is only 9 month old) so having EU passport would be useful as my dad lives in Spain so I will inherit property out there before too long. plus my wife owns a house in Poland. I got married in Poland also, which may help?

Toby - if you read the link on the newspapers i gave you it says it does apply if you married a citizen of another EU country but the rules may be different

The Polish enbassy would be a good place to start.... or Google of course
