What are the latest products for good Battery operated Par cans ?

Could have really done with some this morning, however using 36 par cans and 2 par bars, don't fancy paying £000's per can. I really don't think they would benefit me financially, but would really cut down on setting up times.

Other thing which bothers me is the battery life. I had to have them setup by 1pm and the night finishes at 1am so a minimum of 13 hours life would realistically be needed - often longer.

So what are people using ?

Cant see products lasting 13 hours--they cant even design a serious battery driven car.

Or if they did it wouldnt be cost effective.

As most gigs are four or five hours at least that would be a minimum requirement.

Be interested in feedback though its probably early days for lengthy use to be experienced--interested as potentially my son needs some.

I wonder if the batteries eventually go the way of my laptop batteries---- after a while practically useless.

I think one day they will get there - (maybe efficient solar use too ?), think at the moment they aren't really suitable for most mobile use. The ones I have been looking at are around 5/6 hours, and as you say may decrease with use. Even 6 hours isn't really much use.

Some battery powered lighting kit is still using old fashioned battery tech - NiCd or NiMh which can pretty rapidly be affected by the dreaded 'memory effect' - where charge capacity markedly slopes off to nowhere over time. This is where charged life of the unit just gets worse & worse - as with laptop batteries & can't be improved without replacing the cells (it usually only takes replacing one or a few cells to bring them back to life, but that often involves breaking up a sealed pack).

More modern stuff has lithium ion batteries more akin to what we have in our smartphones & tablets. With high capacity and a good tolerance for fast charging these types are currently the best game in town for portable power but even they can suffer cell degradation over time & need replaced.

If manufacturers had the foresight to make gear capable of handling battery pack options or upgrades this wouldn't be an issue for those folks who feel they need 12 hours battery life but for now, we'll all have to make do (unless we want to 'hack' manufactured units) with 'up to 8 hours' battery life.

The 64,000 dollar question is--

Will they still have long life after 12 months use ?

Whats your experience?

They are part of our hire stock ,so most people set them up in morning and they run all day no problem ,just give them a remote control kids play and a great money earner all are packed in a flightcase which you just plug in to mains and it charges them all.

And how often have they been used/recharged ?

Over 2 years about 60 times.

I have used 2 types of battery par over the last 7 years. The last ones have been awesome, but now need new batteries after about 3 years of regular use (up to 13 hours). You really need to do the research and make the financial investment with these products unless you want to pay a fortune with ADJ etc. stuff. I am looking at wording another batch soon so email me if you want between 4-16. I need 10 x new batteries plus some 4 x non LED pars. I would estimate about £100 a unit with import tax and postage.

Like this although this is not the company I use!!

Thanks. :)

Cheers Toby, it will be next year before I would be looking at ordering as ideally would like 24 in one go. I'll contact you nearer the time though if ok - sounds good if the batteries can be changed too :)
