Just took a booking from a local venue to test their newly installed sound limiter, in the presence of the council and a local neighbour who is responsible for the damn thing being installed in the first place.
Song recommendations welcome. :daft:

They tend to be my go-to sound check songs when I'm at a new venue and I feel like winding them up a bit. ;)

Don't worry Peter - I got it (must be an age thing ;) ).
The big question is.....will the venue ONLY contain that little handful of people, or will it be a full blown party to prove the point in a real-life situation? And will the clowncil be monitoring the sound levels from OUTSIDE at the same time?

The songs I suggested aren't useful at all. I sound check with them to troll the venue staff.

But Benny- if they're not tracks designed to run through the gamut of musical frequencies, and they're not whimsically titled tracks, I fear they are outside the remit of Shaun's question.
For what it's worth, especially if I've got a larger PA in use, I love to check with a bit of Skrillex, or AC/DC- Thunderstruck. :) Kasabian -Fire is nice as well.

From tbe information they gave i will only be venue staff, complainent, and someone from the council. No mention of whether sound levels will be monitored from outside.
I got the imression that they just wanted a suitably loud sound system so they could set te limiter at a level that appeases this one complainent.

Well if we're going to be silly, then given the battle lines drawn up between Shaun and the venue on one side, and the council and complainant on the other, there's only one possible choice. Gustav Holst anyone? Planets suite.

Exactly my first thought. These people are clueless, but at least they are trying to test it. You need to explain that with a room full of people even just talking it will add a lot (even up to half) to the overall limit. I would demonstrate that not every track is the same also, so it needs to be in a good position. It would be good to educate the neighbour if poss but in the right fashion. Could be a good political move on your behalf with the venue esp if you bring along some handheld monitors and perhaps print off some information?? Feel free to copy this: http://yourdj.co.uk/sound-meters-noise-limiters/
Are you being paid for this Shaun? :)
As a test I would use every breath you take as it has a really great high, mid and bass to it.
I would compare it to brightside and then perhaps Bob Marley as it has a lot of high end.
For a funny track. Rihanna - please don't stop the music. Good one to test as its sampled from a disco track so will be consistent.
100db would be the goal for a start off, ideally 105??

I have seen both sides of the argument.
I have DJ-ed and so need to play fairly loud.
When my next door neighbour moved in they would have very loud parties from mid evening until about 7:30am next morning.
Just how or when I was supposed to sleep I don't know.
So I complained to their housing association and haven't heard a party since.

Toby, for heavens sake!!
He's Scottish.
He's nearly as tight as me. I once dropped 50p, and got struck by it on the back of the head. :)

.
Not cause and effect. DJs need to play at the level required to suit location and circumstances. Not necessarily loud.

In all seriousness now, the tracks we used when doing a similar test / calibration for a venue:
Kings of Leon - Sex on Fire (because it gets played at a hell of a lot of functions)
Prodigy - Firestarter (because it's a heavy dance track)
Steely Dan - Do it again (because it's got a good dynamic range)
Clint Eastwood & General Saint - Another one bites the dust (Just listen to it, you'll see why)
Is it too late to suggest they get an AVC type limiter? (it's what we have for the above venue)

Seriousness? Don't recall the OP asking for that?:confused:
Grudgingly resigned mode engaged> Sigh. If we must, I'd put Van Morrison - Brown Eyed Girl in. One of the most constant high level bass lines there is. < Mode disengaged. Grudgingly. Harrumph. :(

A little more info. The venue at this point are on their very last warning with the council - this has been an ongoing issue for quite a while now with the complainant making things very difficult for them every single weekend. So at this point they are doing everything in their power to appease the complainant and the council. the sound limiter is the last resort to save their license.
Whilst it would be good if they were to consider the needs of the entertainment, alas, I don't think they'll be inviting any input from me. If they ask though, I'll gladly add my thoughts.

Somehow I don't see them having to ask. :D
Right, I've taken the tablets: This could end up being another case where a business or venue has operated happily for many years without issue, and someone moves in, complains, and gets the place closed or restricted. It's been seen before. :(

What they mean is, they would rather fit a limiter than do remedial work to limit noise spill properly. Because it's much cheaper.

Be fair. It could be a listed building, which would effectively rule it out. Other factors maybe need to be taken into account too, we don't know. It may even be leased, which could also rule it out, who knows?

I tend to agree this is most likely. A venue I've been to a few times has a limiter, the room is under ground level with doors going out to steps to ground level... Nowhere for the sound to easily escape except those doors aren't thick sound resistant doors they're thin wooden ones with windows. Oh and they're building more new houses around the venue as well. Nutcases!

I've found limiters are either very bass sensitive, otherwise, they flash like crazy the moment I talk on the mic...

Frivolous answer: Modern DJs don't use microphones, so that's irrelevant. :D
Sensible one: You're absolutely right. I've had them where you can play the music loud without any problems, but as soon as you use the mic, you're in trouble.

Well, today was the day.
The council guy asked for a song to be played as loud as possible, during which, he was on the phone to his colleague who was nearby at the complainants house. My job was to turn down the volume gradually till it couldn't be heard by the complainant outside her house. Bass bins completely off - still too loud. Bass completely down on my mixer EQ's - still too loud. Volume lowered even more. The volume was akin to background music levels.
The venue has it's hands tied, they either comply or lose their licence.

Now you see, I'd say that's wrong. I'd have expected reasonable levels ( ie audible ) inside the house. There's no way on God's earth you'll be able to achieve sensible levels inside and silence outside without some very heavy duty insulation. Crackers. :daft:

Have the venue considered turning off the music at 11pm?
Also, noise levels MUST be tested from WITHIN the dwelling that the dwelling that the person has complained from.
I recommend the venue pursue this properly to avoid being restricted to a point that significantly affects their earning potential.

Yep that's the one! To be honest though whoever thought it was a good idea to mix a wedding venue with residential property with only around maybe 6-7m to separate them (the road coming in) was asking for trouble. No idea which came first but they're building even more flats I believe around the back :daft:
I guess that's what happens when you have a lovely location in an expensive area, it gets squeezed for every penny they can make.

I wonder if that venue will eventually end up closing down as a result? I've seen that happen more times than I'd like. :(

The complainant isn't selling their house, are they? I've seen this before *cough*, where the only way for the venue to operate is to buy the property from the complainant and rent it to someone who won't complain...but the complainant will put a premium on the price ;)
