NiN... They industrial metal? I think they are but not sure. Closer is a song that's gone down well at a few gatherings of metallic types I've done. Everything else it seems I've forgotten already.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but unless he's released some stuff I haven't heard, I don't remember Harry Belafonte doing a lot of heavy metal.

Sorry Shaun, while I've played quite a few on that list, I'm no expert.

Great version that Steve!
If they're up for a mosh then I'd suggest Jesus Built My Hotrod by Ministry.

Good list by Steve - I'd also add in Korn and Coal Chamber too.

Perhaps get someone else to do it or bring someone along that knows about that sort of genre?
I got Dave Mills to DJ an event as the bride was rather peculiar to say the least (probably totally normal to Steve).
Her wedding was on Halloween and she wanted some very obscure tracks that I had no idea about, so did not DJ.

I had a booking at my residency where the girl told me to play her very obscure list and nothing else and it ended up with only them dancing all night. Very frustrating when the bride, groom and their friends only like the music! I only take on rock wedding when there is a mix of 'normal' tracks and a safe list of rock to fall back on. I always tell them I will try my best and usually do play most of the set list. Classic rock, teenage dirtbag / greenday / Nirvana / metallica type tracks are awesome for that as it pleases both parties.

Parov Stelar is big in Electro Swing, here are some suggestions (Parov Stelar) from folk for my first foray into this area.
Sak Noel can be good, but a teeny teeny word of caution. Some of his songs are a tad " interesting". Check out " I am the law ", particularly the video. I posted it on here before, can't remember if it was deemed unseemly, or as Steve reckoned, just garbage.:)

Plenty of "hard rock and heavy metal" in my first post? Pretty broad criteria the way I am reading it, but i guess Shaun is ofay with those genres so sorry if that wasted your time? Just trying to help as i had a cracking list from an actual client. Yes the second list has very little to do with it so fair point. :)

I have a 3 hour list of tracks that encompass modern electro swing, but I dare not post it.
PM me if you want it Shaun. :)

I love some of the PS remixes. Love - Remix is a great track (yes I know its not swing): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYWUK-sm9OQ
Its the first track on my background track if I have a younger or slightly clubby crowd before FD.

Jeepers Creepers - Louis Armstrong

I love this track. In the second (older) list I sent you. :) The Gatsby could form quite a bit of the early evening. You could go between new and old. Quite a few tracks from the other list I posted Steve. But also a few I have never heard of - lets hope the guests know them huh? :p

Tik Tok? - Is that grove metal then? By jove. I have found that my metal head brides have a very strange selective EDM tastes as well? They have picked tracks i would never have imagined and would have never guessed. The power of a track list. DJ's that just turn up and say they know what to play are kidding them selves if you ask me as everyone likes different things, looking at some of my set lists.

Heavens above Shaun, I've not played Ink Spots at a disco for a while. Don't forget Whispering Grass, either. :) The Platters are of a similar time and style.

Not sure about the classifications of some tracks, ie Sweet is Glam Rock, never Heavy, but what's in a name? Hope you and the guests have a ball.

Haha they always make me laugh out loud. Somebody posts about a provided music list & they go off on one about professional integrity of the DJ, reading the room, yada yada yada. What a crock! Yeah boy, let's put you in a room full of smartly dressed metal fans & see how long it takes you to find out what they like by merely testing the water with your 'tried & tested' DJ tropes! ... is what I think of those guys.

Even the biggest hardest bearded, tattoed, 'bad mad and dangerous to know' metal head might like Beyonce or backstreet boys. You just don't know. I like metal and I look like a 5th Harmony fan :p

All the people that have said that to me are ex record and CD DJ's that just did not have the access we have these days to music on the fly, or have worked blind to the client. Certain weddings, minimising requests and a set list works a charm, but I would say 80-90% of them work better with a detailed pre event set list and guests request on then night especially Shauns event.

Wedding/personalty occasions this is, lots of corporates and some parties work well treated like a club set, depending on the vibe and guests present. :)

I was at a wedding fair this time last year and was the only DJ there as I am recommended by the venue (Pitt Hall Barn).
A girl approached me with her Mum. Her Mum was doing most of the talking and asked me to tell her about how I went about things when I did my job and I told them what I tell everyone and that's that I am very 'request friendly' and thrive on music input from my customers and their guests because I like to give them the music that they WANT to hear and NOT what I THINK they want to hear, despite my experience.

The girl, who'd been pretty quiet up until then started taking notice of what I was saying. I had no idea what type of music she liked. All she had done until that point was smile and say "hello".

I also said another thing that I nearly always say and that was that it was my job and I take it seriously just like anybody does with their own job.
If went on to say that if I played the music that I liked, I probably wouldn't be a full-time DJ because they wouldn't be as many bookings coming my way so I adapt and play what the customers want. I think that's the same with all of us (hence Shaun asking about this particular genre and why forums like this are great for helping).

Anyway, the Mum (still doing most of the talking), firstly asked what my type of music was and secondly told me that her daughter was quite specific about what her and her fiance liked. I told them both that my preference is Alternative, Rock, Ska and Punk and as soon as I said that, the daughter suddenly looked interested. It didn't take long for her to start listing bands that she and her fiance and friends liked (Disturbed, Sepultura, Korn etc.) and it was her that asked if I would be able to play that kind of stuff at her wedding. An email quotation followed and I was booked the following day for the wedding which is in February.

Since that initial conversation, the Bride seems a different person. She can't believe she has booked a DJ that will play the music they want and I guess the reason she didn't look that interested when we originally met was because she expected the usual wedding disco which she really didn't want.
I have advised that the guests need taking into account because it won't be everybody's cup of tea and she assures me that most of the guests are into it so we'll have to see.

I was suited and booted when I met her and her Mum. I just looked like a bloke with a shaven head. When we got talking we got on to the subject of live music, tattoos and piercings and we ended up comparing ink because she was covered up too and had lots of tattoos too.

her fiance and friends liked (Disturbed, Sepultura, Korn etc.)

I get really annoyed when parents take over and don't let the bride talk. Its their wedding, let them say what they want. On occasions I have directed all my questions from the mum to the couple and they look shocked and don't know what to say. I did have one mum that kept trying to organise meeting with the couple. I ended up saying "would it not be easier to do this directly" as things were starting to get confusing.

Nothing else matters first dance.

I think from memory disturbed was what my couple here were dancing too later on in the night and they were the only ones on the floor. Several older couples left the room and went and sat downstairs for the rest of the night. They were happy as larry though and did not mind me also playing chart stuff & classics for most of the other guests. :)

On the occasion I was talking about I don't think the Mum was taking over. The Bride to be was just very quiet at the time and I guessed it was down to the fact that she expected, thought or imagined me to be just another wedding DJ. No disrespect when I say that.
Like I said, once she realised that I could cater for her because I knew the genres she liked, she was more animated.

I've done a number of weddings like Shaun is going to experience and so far, they have all gone well.
I looked at the email after I'd posted earlier and they've requested that the more heavier stuff (like Disturbed for example) is played after 10.00pm. They want a mix of Indie, Ska, Rock, Punk and Nu Metal amongst other things.

As for 'Nothing Else Matters' - I had a string of weddings where that was the first dance and I got bored with it very quickly which was a shame because I did like that song too.

Oh yes you :Censored: well do. (It's just as well I've not long got back in* from last night's gig, after a 19 hour working day (& a stupidly long journey home) & am too tired to go into that one any further)

Contrary to popular belief it is possible to have fun to music that you don't particularly like. A good portion of last night's crowd (including the B&G) were into "Metal", but that didn't mean that when the set changed from Lordi, Turisas & Rammstein that they didn't dance to YMCA & Agadoo. Far from it.

The thing is the B&G wanted somebody who could handle either end of this spectrum (& most points in between, including some Steampunk), so were fully prepared to pay our usual fee plus keeping me fed & watered, the extra travel costs involved in my doing a 300+ mile round trip, & hotel room for the night & breakfast this morning.

As an aside...

A thought has occurred to me. What's happened to looking like the tribe you belong to? Things were much easier when you could tell the Mods from the Rockers.

I wonder if people just don't have the courage of their convictions any more?

*Just realised I didn't click Submit Reply when my food delivery arrived, do I have been in a while, but really can't be arsed to rise to pathetic jibes.

I must admit that I didn't understand Toby's comment either.
Just because someone likes (for example) Metal....does it mean that they are the hardest, maddest, meanest to know?? I don't get it?
Does that mean that all Punks are glue sniffing, gob merchants and that all of the New Romantics are frilly wearing ponces and not as 'hard' as the Skinheads?

Anyway, Steve.... I was talking to someone about 'tribes' and identities just the other night.
I loved it back in the day when you could walk down the streets and see Mods, Rockers, Teds, New Romantics, Goths, Skinheads and Punks for example. There doesn't seem to be that around anymore. You may see some about and I always think it's cool because they're not conforming to the 'norm. They're keeping that retro look and I love it.
Everyone seems to be a clone of what is happening fashion wise at the time.

That's not me and never has been.

I used to wear a crombie and zebra striped brothel creepers and listen to mod, punk, soul, funk, goth etc - that confused a few people.

I wore a crombie, fred perry, braces and monkey boots and I was into Gary Numan!
I still wear a fred perry and doc martens but like loads of stuff.
A guest at a wedding once invited me back to the bar afterwards for a chat as he'd seen my Tubeway Army tattoo. We chatted for ages about music and under his suit he was covered in tattoos and battle scars from his punk days. He was old skool and was there at the time when it was all happening and in full flow.

Don't get me wrong, I do understand that you also DON'T have to wear the gear to show the music you listen to but I do like that identity thing.
I went to see Numan for the first time in 9 years just a few weeks ago in Norwich and it was great but the crowd there were nothing like they used to be and there weren't many copycats there. I was stood at the back and someone actually asked me "what's a skinhead doing at a Gary Numan gig?".

Not sure if I am getting my point across? I know what I'm trying to say but it's not coming out properly (heavy night at darts last night!).
