Bass-bin recommendation

I'm downsizing my gigging and looking to sell my Evox 12 system and keep my ld maui 5s and thomann DSP 112 tops.
If I sell the Evox i'll replace with single (light) sub to complement the thomanns and am looking for suggestions. The
Yamaha dsx 12 mk 2 stands out for spl to price ratio. anything else I should look at? thanks

From looking at the german sites i can get a RCF 705 mk2 for around the same price as the yamaha above. 15" v 12" and 131db v 134db.
Really don't want more than a 30kg carry.

From experience the 705's are HEAVY (more than 30Kg each).

I've been reliably informed that the FBT and Alto 12" bins are lightweight and pack a reasonable punch.

I've got a 705as, I can carry it by myself but it's heavy. Just bought an alto ts212s, I haven't gigged it yet but it seemed quite reasonable sound from a small lightweight subwoofer.

I'm getting the impression that the Maui 5s are going to do that side of things, and he needs a fairly lightweight 2.1 rig for larger gigs, ie a sub to add to his existing tops.

I've had both sizes of Alto sub, 15" and 12", and I'd be inclined to suggest the fifteen under twelves.

I can't see how 1 x sub is going to provide a significant improvement.

Whilst the Maui 5s are good, the Evox 8 significantly outperforms it.

I've often considered a 'bigger' system than the Evox 8, but my conclusion is that you need to get significantly better to see any major improvement over the Evox 8 - and that means bigger and heavier.

I guess to bring it back to the OP - what gigs are you looking to use this 'new' system for? What are you currently using the Evox 12 for?

If it's standard weddings and functions up to 150 people, then the Evox 8 will be fine. The reason I ruled out the Evox 12 was the size and weight.

Evox 12 has a total weight of 36kg per side, and comes in 2 parts.

The Evox 8 is just 24kg, significantly smaller, and comes in 1 part, and can be easily carried in with one hand (many manage 2 x Evox 8s in one trip). My Rock n Roller does the work for me though ;)

IMaui 5s are good, the Evox 8 significantly outperforms it.

He may want a different sort of system as the Thomann tops are directional, where as the Maui, & RCF are arrays.

I must say those tops have some fabulous specs and reviews, especially as they are dirt cheap at £200!!
I have an 8 inch box pro and its phenomenal for the price.

For 12 inch cabs I would say they would do just as good job on their own!

Evox 8 is a bit too expensive and yes the maui 5 would suffice as my small system and the thomanns plus sub would be my bigger system.
My typical gig ranges from 60 - 120. I play specialist music and don't tend to take on the larger weddings anymore and having
gone back to college and family commitments means I'm unlikely to do more than 20 weddings a year from now on. I think it's
a good opportunity to get back a lot of my investment in the Evox 12 and spend a small amount to supplement the Thomann tops
which have seriously impressed me with their power and performance. Can the maui 5 subs be used without the top attachments
as an interim measure?
Ideally i'd like to get a better sub than a 124db as I think you'd need two of those!

A certain gentleman from Yorkshire will be able to answer that one accurately, but as the owner of the Maui28's I'd say the answer is a resounding no. It might be that the 5's are different, but the 28's "check" to see that everything's connected.

I am touched by your faith, Wayne, but sadly I can't say whether the 5s will operate sub only. Whether they would add anything of value to the 12" tops, I don't know. :confused:

Due to a recent Senior Moment, I can however confirm that if you fit the tops to the Mk 1 11s the wrong way round, you only get the sub output. :o:o

Also, you don't see them very often, but dedicated bass bins were made for the 28 Mk 1, to boost the low end,and I have seen them come up sporadically on Ebay.

Your cunning plan to run one stick rig, and one three/four box seems logical enough to me. Your dilemma will be whether to buy one high grade, high output ( probably heavier ) bin, or two cheaper, lighter budget ones.

I managed to pick up a used set of FBT promaxx 15sa with poles (but no covers unfortunately) for €800/£700. Think I got a really good deal as they needed to sell as a set and most people wanted to buy a single. Will probably sell one and the other will suffice for my needs. Thanks for the advice.
