Classic Soul?

Hi Guys,

I've taken on a last minute gig for this Friday at a venue I've worked at before, upstairs via a narrow fire escape :(

Anyway, the initial music brief is Motown/80's for a 60th birthday.


Turns out the birthday boy is a fan of 'classic soul', I've been given a list of some of his favourites (which I don't have)

So what I'm looking for is :

a) Any other 'classic soul' which would be recommended.
b) Can anyone recommend any classic soul compilations which would contain the said tracks?

Hi,

Usually if you're looking for tracks that are part of a compilation I just google the track name + 'compilation' and it'll come up with albums including that track leading you down a rabbit hole of similar and hidden gems.

Sounds like the Danum in Doncaster and that's through an underground car park where you can't usually get a parking space!!

Thanks Peter, Northern soul has always confused me (as usually the people that ask for it don't know the difference), its something I really need to brush up on or at least have 20 definitive classics. I will put a NS playlist on my laptop as I get confused myself with the other hits from the States. I will have a look at the top 10. In terms of the question, I am guessing you are still on CD? Rather than buying a load of compilations, can't you buy the tracks and burn them to disk?

Same here, also I did not know that classic soul contained different genres. Again, it's not something I've heard of before, or even been asked for. I'll be creating a folder with the top classics that I can source.

I have a soul mix that includes a lot of tracks like the blues brothers film music etc. One is 8 mins and the other 15, so I usually play that as it covers a lot of bases. Its also a great time to check on other parts of the wedding, when MCing, or go to the loo. I will get a wedding with some Northern Soul people at some point so I have created the following list just in case. Are there any super popular tracks that i have missed? Or ones on this list which are not so great for the average guest who likes very commercial soul? Funnily I know 80% of these tracks, but did not really put them down as Northern Soul.

Useful Northern albums are Soul Survivors Vol1, ( 2 isn't quite as good ), North of Watford series ( although again, Vol1 is the stand out one )

For Motown, Hitsville USA (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hitsville-USA-Singles-Collection-1959-1971/dp/B000006NUW/ref=sr_1_56?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1526283830&sr=1-56&refinements=p_n_feature_five_browse-bin%3A382534011) is a great start ( there's a Vol2 as well, which follows the later years, and appears more expensive, and CD only.
The Motown 100 is a good album, too.

Soul? Well some say if it's not Stax/Atlantic, it's not really soull, and this Now Album (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Thats-What-Call-Classic-Soul/dp/B072F55Z7Z/ref=sr_1_7?s=dmusic&ie=UTF8&qid=1526284215&sr=1-7&keywords=soul&refinements=p_n_format_browse-bin%3A78186031) is mainly Tamla. It's good though.

There's also Philadelphia Soul, and this (https://www.amazon.co.uk/100-Hits-Best-Soul-Album/dp/B07958ZSDF/ref=sr_1_25?s=dmusic&ie=UTF8&qid=1526284453&sr=1-25&keywords=soul&refinements=p_n_format_browse-bin%3A78186031) has a fair smattering.

That's just scratching the surface, and I'm not the Oracle on this. He's on holiday in Turkey, sunning himself.

Indeed, that's where I usually turn to for Northern Soul etc. Mastermix Classic Cuts have two Northern Soul CDs and also have a Philly Soul one too.
