Rustic booths. I can kinda see the appeal to clients but when speakers and lights don't look rustic it's kinda like putting lipstick on a pig IMHO. Come on people, bring out woodgrain effect cabs, I dare ya...

They're a Marmite thing (like LOVE letters), but couples are going WILD for mine at the moment. At the moment, the Rustic has more bookings for the next 12 months than anything else :)

(a new and improved even MORE Rustic version will be appearing online after the weekend)

More power to you then.

I've got ideas for 'different' booths which will hopefully see fruition before the end of September.

What if we've completely got it wrong? What if Dogs don't like chasing balls, but instead love putting it in a certain place and we just pick it up and throw it only for them to retrieve it and put it back in their favourite place?

Hessian of course. But special, acoustically transparent Hessian, naturally! Ha.

I've not yet seen a rustic booth I don't like (bar one) but my issue comes from the fact it's near impossible to make other functional parts of the rig fit the theme too.

Here's one that will be really unpopular, but one in response to seeing the whole 'Sole Traders Should Get SSP During The Corona Virus Outbreak' schtick that I've been seeing on Social Media:

In my opinion, Sole Traders shouldn't get SSP.

We all know that there is a steep downside to being a sole trader but to balance that off, there is a steep upside. As is with running our own business comes the responsibility of looking after ourselves both professionally and personally.
The option to have income protection insurance for sole traders is out there. We all decided that we didn't want to work for someone else and as a result, we lose out on the benefits that comes with being employed in a 'proper job'. We, as Sole Traders, get so much that is a lot better than being employed and being responsible to ensure that we have measures in place for these sorts of occurrences is just part and parcel of our choices.

I didn't think that SSP existed anymore (as paid by HMRC), regardless of circumstances. I "employ" a number of people to look after my daughter and a few years ago one of them managed to accrue enough hours to get the right to sick pay, and then went off sick for almost 6 months. We had to pay SSP directly ourselves and that completely crippled our ability to hire a replacement and provide support for her (from memory it was literally a few weeks after the rules changed and SSP was dropped).

The current SSP rate is not a lot of money (£95/week - £2.375/hr based on a 40hr week) so it's almost not worth debating. Ask anyone who is self-employed and has had to try and survive on SMP (Maternity pay)...

Julian

SSP is now paid by your employer, NOT HMRC (and employers aren't overly chuffed that they've now got to fork out from day one of calling in sick as opposed to day 4 - it's coming out of their bottom line).

The only time it's paid by HMRC is if an employer goes bust, when they then take over paying the entitlement.

I've been doing some reading up on this whole thing because, well yes I'm worried should we enter the Italian scenario where Force Majeure comes into play.

Apparently (and I honestly wasn't aware of these schemes and always thought that self employed lived off savings in these scenarios), there ARE insurance policies we can get to cover us. By all accounts, you won't be able to take a new policy now which covers Covid (or that's what I'm being told), but it's certainly something I'm going to be looking into for the future.

I've got income protection insurance, have had for the last 17 years. IIRC it doesn't kick in until I've been unable to work for a month, though, so quite different from the SSP scenario!

I looked into policies a few years ago, but were so expensive and didn't kick in till after between a month and 3 months (longer for some) they just didn't seem worth it

Although I would benefit (maybe) I totally agree as think it would be impossible to govern and most people would take the p:Censored::Censored::Censored: - we do not have bosses to encourage us back to work.

Also, there are many who are self employed but also have jobs.

End of the day, if this benefit did come in, it would have to be paid for in someway and Mr HMRC has already been very successful in emptying my bank account.

I'd counter that with self employed people don't get any of the security benefits of a "proper job". Pensions schemes, holiday pay, sick pay etc....

My personal preference is that the government provide interest free overdraft facilities for businesses for 12-18 months. They bailed the banks out making daft decisions while this is something that's totally out of our hands. I can see this being the final nail in the coffin for many business if there isn't any help provided.

That is an excellent idea - could be based on your previous years income so get an idea of how much the overdraft should be to stop people taking advantage.

I am confused at these DJs saying due to the current climate they are selling up.

What have they got that is worth selling realistically, who is buying, and what is it worth ??

Unless a diary full of bookings there is nothing (most) DJs have that is worth selling up.

They basically have with the Bounce Back Loan.

It's 12 months interest and fee free.

You can use it for 12 months, and pay it all back.

Can't pay it back? Then there's a structured monthly repayment plan.

Yes, I DO actually have an exit plan just in case it's needed (for instance, if it's looking like things like Social Distancing are a more permanent part of life).
I'm not going to get rich from it, but then the disco doesn't actually owe me any money (apart from the ongoing insurance and lockup rental costs). Worst case scenario, I start selling kit (so long as people buy it, I'm in profit) and wave goodbye.

This sounds daft, but I'm actually enjoying being out in the world of work again for the moment. It's not the most glamorous job in the world (training to be a supermarket online delivery driver), but I get to be with regular workmates, share banter, and a week in I'm already starting to notice fitness levels improve.

I got wondering about this one evening as a lot of businesses do have exit plans and they can actually be key to walking away from a business with money in the bank (as opposed to it actually costing you years of earnings to close out!) With some business/industries where the opportunity is relatively short lived (e.g. Pay day loans, PPI, etc) it's essential to have a plan on how to close up shop, or the money made during the operation could be negated by the startup and shutdown costs. I've done this once before (I sold another business) and it's probably not as straight forward as you'd think. Some costs disappear quite quickly (advertising), others don't go away until the business is done (insurance, professional memberships, storage, transport, etc), others hit you a long time after the income has gone (tax/vat) and if any part of the business was paid for using finance, then you'd also want that to be paid of when the income stops. If your cashflow is in good shape then winding down isn't a big deal, but if you're reliant on cash in hand for bills and you've been spending deposits/advance payments as they come in, then you could be in a position where you're working without a lot of income as soon as you stop taking new business. If you're not heavily dependent on the income and you've got relatively low levels of debt then it's easy, otherwise, not so much.

I got to this because I've been looking very closely at how my household income would stack up if the disco income is on hold for 6, 12, 18months and then what income/expenses would look like without it, and I'd have to manage it very carefully.

I'm going back a few years now, but my Uncle and Auntie used to live near Cambridge with their 2 kids, both in reasonably demanding jobs and when my Auntie's mother died, they took the opportunity to change pace and moved into her house in Scotland to enjoy their kids as they grew up. They managed to both ditch their jobs and my Uncle used to work nights in Tesco and my Auntie did bits and pieces of music tuition to keep them going and he used to love it.

On the plus side, you're now a key worker :D

My fitness levels have improved a fair bit since we locked down and I started working from home full time. Mostly because I've spent the time catching up with 5yrs of odd jobs that I haven't had the time to do (I've got 5 builders bags of garden waste to shift now!!) I've moved on to dealing with maintenance of some of the disco kit that I've never got round to (sorting out my booth/cloth, switching out XLR connectors for Neutrix, finding a better way to mount those :Censored: ADJ UV bars onto stands). Still lots to keep me busy... Sadly my increased activity has been offset by my :Censored: appalling lockdown diet

Just can't understand the thinking behind this, why waste your time photographing and compiling listing for equipment you have no chance of selling?

I don't think many people starting business's have an exit plan, they assume it will work out, but statistics show this is far from the truth. A massive 60% of start-ups fail within 3 years and 20% fail in less than a year leaving many of the owners bankrupt with all the consequences they will inevitably face, very sad really. The biggest cause of failure is reckless expansion on borrowed money instead of accumulating a cash reserve in the business for the unexpected events that often befall new business.
