Outgoing PMs not working

Could an Admin or Mod help please? I am receiving private messages but unable to post replies.

Apologies for posting this here but I don't know where else to post about this as I can't post a PM to an admin! The mods can always delete this thread after reading.

I reckon Marc J is the man to solve this. I will make him aware, if he hasn't already seen it. At a wild guess, it's a setting at your end.

Thanks Excalibur. I just replied to your PM and it looks like it's disappeared into the ether again. I have no Sent Items since October 21st - when I was first aware that something wasn't right. Previous PMs are still present. Thanks if anybody can help.

Not sure why you tested the PM system with a reply here, that would send you an email (if subscribed to the topic), not a PM. I think you may be getting your terminology confused?

No problem.

I just looked in your account options and you have the saving of sent PMs set to off. Go here (https://www.forum.mobilediscodirectory.co.uk/profile.php?do=editoptions) and scroll down to "Private Messaging" section - "Sent Private Messages:" and set that to save a copy: -

18940

Remember to scroll to the bottom and [Save Changes] ;)

I've done exactly as you said. Still not sure how this came to be marked as 'Off' as PMs *were* working fine, Sent Items too. I run a phpBB bulletin forum elsewhere, nothing to do with discos, and should have thought to check this, but since I hadn't actually made any changes I assumed something more technical.

Will give it a try again and report back if anything is untoward.

By default it should be set to save sent items. The only people who can change that are yourself and mods / admins.

Loath as I am to gainsay the Oracle: I thought that was a very likely reason*.

Oh bring back valves PLEASE! Far more reliable than this modern stuff. I still have a 1960s valve radio which works - and works well!

Just testing this further now, but the reason for failures escapes me... scraping the barrel for possibilities now!

Lengthy PMs failing - test a shorter one. A new one, not a reply. There are a lot of security rules around the text in messages (forum posts and PMs) and the longer it is the more likely it is to trigger a rule.

PMs between members is allowed regardless of user group / post count etc. I've sent you (John) a test PM from a test account (this one (https://www.forum.mobilediscodirectory.co.uk/member.php?52525-MJ-Test)), feel free to reply to that or send a new PM to it to test.

ETA: It seems save sent items to sent folder is off by default. As far as I can see that's just how it is, needs to be turned on by the user.

These things happen. Servers can be temperamental, etc. It's almost certainly just one of those temporary glitches we have little control over. I have problems elsewhere, Ebay for instance gives me loads of grief. I lost access to my Facebook accounts (personal and business) for a week recently. No reason, but it works again now. The fact that this issue is intermittent may say something. We have to expect these things from time to time. Thanks again marc.

Got your PM no problem on my test account.

PMs have a max character limit of 5,000. Maybe you've been exceeding this... or triggering a security rule (it's pretty tight). There are no server issues here ;)

For the record, I usually delete quoted text. I'm not sure there's much point in retaining it unless there's something specific you want to respond to. Each to their own with that one though.
