I'm an ex, ex DJ. That's not a typo. I got a grant in 1986 and set myself up. I went t through various consoles, all Citronic, from the original Severn II popular to the Thames II. I gave up because of two things, firstly my first wife hated me doing it, and secondly the scene was getting too rough, with a lot of young upstarts going out for beer money. I'd had enough of what had become a rat race. That was in 94. Fast forward to today and I'm 60. I bought some used gear and set up again, only doing charity gigs, nursing homes etc for free. My current wife doesn't like me doing it, but sees it makes me happy. Her concerns are I'm two unwell - I'm diabetic and have fatty liver caused Cirrhosis as well as working full time from home (I've never drank), and that I've got two nursing homes I do for a couple of hours-once every two months, alternating so I do one home a month or so. I don't want to get on that treadmill again. I do 50's-80's music on vinyl and CD.
She's concerned that I'll get into trouble as because I don't charge, I'm putting other DJ'S and entertainers noses out of joint by taking their work from them. What do you think? Is she right, or is she wrong? I'd love to hear your views.
