For the last 4 or 5 years I've been booked to DJ for an American women's college thankgiving dinner and always have to guess a bit at the music they like. They're only over here for a year and I don't know what they listen to. I always do a bit of research, but I guarantee that there will be a tune I play that will clear the floor every year as they don't know it or it wasn't released in the States.

Some memorable ones from the last few years have been:

Mavericks - Dance the night away (didn'trealise they were from Leeds at the time!)

R Kelly - Vibe

And last night - Bon Jovi - Living on a prayer!!!:eek:

I played it after summer of '69 as I normally do and it cleared the floor and they said they didn't know it. (Although a few seemed to recognise it after a few verses)

they don't know it or it wasn't released in the States.We had a wedding earlier this year where everyone was either American or Canadian, so we know what you mean about things being a bit different.

However, the bride & groom had also appreciated the situation and so after meeting with them and chatting, they put together a huge long list of stuff that would be North American continent friendly!

I know that a lot of you aren't big fans of playlists..... but in this case, it really did make a huge difference, as there was some stuff on there that we would never have thought of, and it took away the risk of playing stuff that they didn't know and clearing the dance-floor.

PS - It also helped that the couple were decent people and really thought about all of their guests tastes - not just their own. They gave us a list that would probably have filled a week, let alone a night... but it gave a great base to work from

I was on holiday in Orlando in May and in the night clubs at downtown disney they played it without fail every night!

I've done functions where there have been American guests present, and have found that their musical tastes differ greatly from those of the UK.

I did a wedding a year or so back where the Groom (who was American) wanted real heavy funk music which he provided on original CD's. Selections included Ohio Players, Parliament, George Clinton (without Parliament) and some real 'off the wall' Kool & the Gang stuff. I quite liked it (as I would :cool: :eek: ) but the UK guests didn't know it and disappeared into the bar !! :eek: :beer1:
