hi guys

sorry if this is in the wrong place ..... can anyone tell me where i can buy a mobile dj booth from or how to make one of my own? know some of you have some great ones and i find myself with a couple of free weeks twiddling my thumbs except weekends now ... so i thought id give it a go ...

any ideas on looks would be appreciated hopefully relatively easy to make as im a technical numpty and needs to collapse/fold as small as possible..... some of you guys are really good at the build it yourself stuff so any tips hel appreciated looking at about a 6ft wide front ish maybe more if it folds small.

thank you in advance.

S&H make starcloth booths and they fold flat, but are a pretty penny at around £700.

I bought a kit from maplin a 10 channel 12v lighting effect generator. Just finished soldering it today (took about an hour) am going to wire 10 sets of 12v led christmas lights (40 led's on each) to create a new either starcloth or I may fit it into a light box.
Will let you know how I do but it has cost me about £40 to do so far. And the 10 channel effects are miles ahead of anything around in the shops. i.e 2 - 4 channel max.

What are you defing as a booth?

I'm considering this for the new year: http://www.terralec.co.uk/prod.asp?i=20100&1=PRO_DECK_STAND

And will add a star cloth from Zelma (Ebay seller) to complete the look.

Hi Will

I used to use one of these from Terralec, had it a year and chucked the over head rig away. It was not stable and was wobbleing all over the place. I used the base for a further couple of years, up until last weekend.

I have now purchased a stand very similar to the one from Terralec but made by Ultimax. Much much more stable and you can extend the light rig if you need to. If you can afford to strech your budget go for it, it will pay in the long term as it will last you a lot longer.

I think he means something like this..

As Darren said though, they're not cheap. A good compromise would be the prolight front star cloth. Or, if you have an ultimax stand, then they make just a plain black frontage for £50, its what i use.

Sam, is the one from terralec the Pro Light one?

If not does anybody know the quality of the Pro Light version of the Deck stand with single cross bar?

Cheers.

Will.

What about this Dave http://www.djkit.co.uk/acatalog/info_1941.html

You might need another case to make your deck taller though?

I've got one of these and they are excellent. I would recommend them to anyone but they are expensive.

What about a DJ stand, and make a folding frontage out of wood, pait it black (Matt Paint) then Varnish with clear varnish, Put hinges on for the sides, before you paint it however predrill holes and add in a pair of either clear or multi coloured xmas lights, hey presto, you have a fully functional hard wearing, easilly put awayable, Deck frontage, for the cost of a few pieces of MDF, two sets of xmas lights and a couple of hours of work and TLC....

Can any one point me in the direction of where to get some black cloth from, to make a frontage. Have seen Black cotton material on a roll but not sure if it's suitable, fireproof or thick enough ?

Cheers

Although Christmas lights can create a buzz when very close to sound equipment (beware)

Though, I don't know why you'd want to pay that much when they are on Ebay for £80....

Oh dear, I have come in late on this one...

Nice to see I have set a trend without anyone actually realising I have! If you check out any of my show pictures you will see the very frontage that dragon is looking for. I've been using mine for about two years now. It was cheap and self made, but as a similarly non-diying man, not the easiest to make.

As has been suggested, it's just 2x1 timber, hardboard or similar, matt black paint (use a roller not a brush - learnt by hard experience!). You can make these any size you want, make them fold in the middle, add folding side, in fact as unique as you want.

When I first made mine, two years ago, I then went on to build and sell about 5 more (and I will absolutely NOT be making any more for anyone), some of which are still in existance - and if any of the guys who bought them are hear, I always forget who you are so hands in the air please. I think at the time mine cost about £70 to build and is probably the single most impressive thing I use - or that's what the clients say.

If you're interested Dragon, give me a buz and I'll try to talk you through how to make one!

I think there may also be a fire engine limo in Glasgow that has one of mine in the roof!

Yup--ive seen Rices and it looks good--but what about carrying space?

I think Rice carried it in the trailer?

Talking of which i have just invested in a Big Roof Box to carry stuff--

Anyone else do that --sorry if this is cross thread but could be relevant if Dragonfly needs to carry more stuff---ill ring you later Dave:D

And now rice carried it in his lovely Yellow Vito!

Actually, as my bulkhead is mesh and as such you can see through it, it does serve the additional purpose of screaning my gear from passers by

They actually have a section for flameproof fabrics here: http://www.whaleys-bradford.ltd.uk/products.cfm?catID=7 so that should narrow things down for you. From memory, you can also get samples sent to you for pennies

Slightly off topic, but I saw the biggest "starcloth DJ booth" I have ever seen on Saturday night. The DJs in the big room where I was working had 6' "star panels the front span was 30' one side 12' the other only 6' to allow access. Everything was inside the booth except their speaker stacks.
