Another Scam?

Hmm, has anyone ever had strange phonecalls, that initially seem to be wrong numbers, but they then attempt to obtain 'your' address. One a couple of weeks ago asked for 'Peanut300600'??? When I gave a bemused repsonse, they then asked me about three or four times what my address was. I have a Yellow Pages advert, but understandably without my home address on and I wonder if any DJs have had their homes specifically targeted or even broken into?

Have had my home broken into but they didn't touch a single item of the dj equipment. Sooo relieved....

I was going to post this elsewhere in the forum, but I think this probably counts as a strange phonecall. Earlier this evening I dialled 1471 and the message said I was called by 0.........., which turned out to be my number. Now I may not be brainy but I do know this should not be possible so I called Customer Services who confirmed that and have passed it onto their engineers.

I got suspicious about this because I know that scammers can send you an email that appears to come from your address. I also vaguely remember something from a few years ago about peoples phone numbers been used to run up huge bills.

Do any of you know how this might have happened. Having had money taken from my bank account recently (got it back again, thankfully) I am a bit wary of anything out of the ordinary lately.

OK let me try a wild guess here, do you have call waiting and do you also not with hold your number automatically everytime you dial out (ie if you ring someone would your number show up if they have a phone that displays caller id)

If so then when you ring yourself you will not get an engaged tone, but when you ring 1471 you will get your number back because that was the last person to call you and the number was passed through when that 'please hold the line, the person you are calling knows you are waiting' message goes out.

It's impossible to ring yourself. I tried that yesterday evening but as I suspected nothing showed up on 1471. I am with Talktalk (I don't think that would make a difference) and when I rang my number I got a message about accessing my voicemail from another phone. Maybe it was some kind of error because the phone did not ring. My partner said the only phone call she had yeterday was from her daughter earlier in the day. I can just hear that theme tune playing now lol.

No it's not impossible to ring yourself, you get an engaged tone, but it is impossible to ring yourself and get a ringing tone, however if you have call waiting you can hear the message telling you that you have a call waiting as you are ringing yourself.

At this point your CLI (Calling Line Identifier) is now in your phone so when you dial 1471 it will give you your own number (unless you have with-held your number when you rang yourself).

OK try this, ring yourself and use ringback!!!!!!!
