I.E.C product recall

For all of you who have bought any iec connectors from maplin (boo hisss) They are recalling all iec connectors sold since june this year due to a defect in manafacture.
As I bought about 20 of em i have to now rewire most of my lighting lol.

Picks up soldering iron mutters to himself and curses maplin to the deepest pit of hell.

my god, all my crossbars are pre wired with iec,s. cant remember wether they were ebay,maplins or other!!!

Yeah, i just had to order a load of new ones on line hope they arrive in time to switch over before the weekend or my lights are going to look messy.

Powercons are the way forward. :)

I've just made up my new amp rack which has one powercon in and one out that links up to the IEC input on my main console. So i can have music running from just one mains plug, then lighting from another one plug. Tidy-cable-tastic!

You can see the powercons on those pics... they're the ones that look like speakons.. but they're for power.

Main advantage being they can't be yanked out as you have to twist them like speakons. Also, they're rated at a higher current too.. but that isn't really of much interest for your average disco.

I presume you mean the "cable in hole, tighten screw" instead of the wrap around the screw job you find in most IECs?

Well you can get the "13A" style ones, although its generally pot luck if you get them!! I've only got a few.

The other ones are OK if you buy those cable attachments that have a hole and then clamp onto the wire...

Yeah I solder them myself as well, trouble is if you're not careful the resulting solder makes the pins no longer fit the casing.
Also no I have to desolder loads of em so i can get my money back lol.

Powercons are the way forward. :)



Powercons are useful as a secure connector on patch panels on things like CD/Mixer racks, OB racks, low voltage lighting controllers, etc as they're less likely to become inadvertantly disconnected, as can be the case with an IEC320/C13/C14 pair.

Powercons are also good in that you can daisy chain Powercon ''A" INs (the blue ones) and Powercon "B" OUTs (white ones), always good to fit both on a panel to facilitate this. Other plus points is they fit the standard XLR / Speakon4 cutout which is always handy and will accept 2.5mm.

Bad points are they're rated at 20a which I've always thought a bit weird, as no-one is going to connect them direct to a 20a breaker, so the best you can really pull through them is 16 or 13. And they're not rated to IP44.

So in summary, they're an OK secondary connector, but not a lot more use than that, although our friends at Rubber Box have introduced this (http://www.rubberbox.co.uk/new-products/RUB1306P.html) baby this year which I must admit finding quite cute :o when I got to hold it recently ..... it's so small and perfectly formed :)
