Terrible party night

Thankfully not one of mine! We went out for the staff party for the Wife's firm. This year it was suggested to go to a chain hotel advertising on the local ILR station, who were apparently providing the disco. Arrived at the place , wonderful setting, first shock came at the bar. £3.50per pint bitter, £2.25 per glass of Pepsi, £6.50 lge glass of wine. Had visions of running out of cash very early!
Sat down to meal, portion control had gone crazy, food very acceptable, just scarce in the extreme. Throughout the meal we were treated to live music, no better or worse than one would expect, and then we got "THE STAR ATTRACTION" Two names from the radio station turned up, dressed like poorly paid roadies, did a very lacklustre set for under an hour, and left us to the tender mercies of the resident DJ. Now my own gear is not the highest spec, biggest lights, or loudest rig, BUT: I could never turn up at a relatively large room in a posh hotel with two small ABS Peaveys, two colour changing cubes, one colour wash, and one small moonflower type light. If I had taken that kit to a children's disco, I would have expected complaints.
We had a fun night because of good company and a good attitude, but I cannot help but feel we were fleeced heavily. Needless to say we will not be going there again.

LOl couldnt be me, my peaveys are wooden.
When you say colour cubes are we talking light box here or 4 inch plastic things from woolies. And when you say small abs peaveys wea talking 8" ?
I use peavey cabs for my gigs these days and find I get good sound from them, mind you I use 15" driver versions and wouldnt use smaller for any gig.
Turned up to a gig the other night and was told there would only be 60 people all night. Turned up and by 8 oclock there were about 200 - 240 in the room.

Peaveys still handeled it ok, even got told to turn it down at one point. Wouldnt take less than 4 projector lamps as minimum for any venue though.

So you would have rather had a rubbish night with a DJ with loads of kit then?

You just said you had a good night and there was a good atmosphere, so what difference does the amount of kit make?

Actually I didn't say that! We had a good night because of OUR GOOD ATTITUDE. The atmosphere was very poor, the DJ was not of the highest order (ie pretty poor) the kit was poor in sound, and in a very long room we couldn't hear announcements at our end. There was no radio mic, which is quite useful if you want to chivvy customers into taking part in their games
( all three of them) The whole impression of the entertainment was "couldn't care less/ only there cos I have to be".
The hotel prices were simply extortionate.

How many where there?

For 90% of my work I use a pair of Eurosys 3's but wouldn't have considered it in this room, cos it was so long and narrow. To carry sound you have to move air, so more drivers always helps. I didn't get the tape measure out, but guess they were 12" not 15".

When you say colour cubes are we talking light box here or 4 inch plastic things from woolies I have not seen these before, approx12" cubes, white plastic, changing colours sound to light. Quite good, as a bonus but not as 50% of your light show!
