I had a woman come and ask me to play Whitney Houston - I want to dance with somebody (who loves me) last night.

Nothing strange about that you're thinking....apart from the fact that I was actually playing it at the time.....:rolleyes:

She was ever so slightly embarrassed, especially when I mentioned it on the mic! :D

The thing is the client pays for a disco so really if they want a song on then you should play it.

absolutely ross but ........

do think a bit of common sense wouldnt go amiss i have a phobia against the arctic monkeys ..... some on here say their stuff works really well but ill never forget in summer a bride really wanting me to play it as it was her favourite song of the moment (i bet you look good on the dancefloor)

i played it for her saying it was a request for the bride and still have nightmares today as the bride and her best mate went mental on the dancefloor 2 full tables at the back of 10 or 12 people got up and left.

the purpose of the top ten threads on here earlier were a to help people to know what generally fills floors and gets people having a good time ....

but also to outline the fact that in a family party environment somethings just dont work.

dont get me wrong meatloaf can be great fun at a gig but with 15 mins left???
the difference is having a client that wants to dance have fun and a laugh or a client that is stuck in their youth when everyone around them has grown up or .... well i listen to this cd every morning on the way to work every morning so can you play it client.

as a little christmas challenge the meatloaf incident lets say :

bat out of hell 9 mins long i was in the middle of playing mickey modelles dancing in the dark.

last say 14 mins by the time that tracks finished can anyone tell me how youd work it in im keen to learn these things?

you could always play the shortend version of bat out of hell just obver 4 mins - but then you would get complaints as it stops at the guitar solo !!!!!!!!!!

I agree tho not a track to be played at the end of a gig - with a non rock crowd.......

last nite was fun was booked at a local pub/resteraunt and by the time everyone had finnished there xmas meals it was nearly 10pm - only booked till midnite (altho i went 15 mins over ) people still complained. But unfortuantly pub has a horible neighbour who hates music and always objects to music licences at the venue.

but as teh landlord said afterwards you left them wanting more so hopefully they will come back on new years eve :):)

nice bonus was 3 bookings there for dec 2007 :)

I agree somewhat, but...

If you booked Gordon Ramsey (as already mentioned :D) to cook a meal for your friends and family for example, and you asked him to make super noodles - do you think he would do it?

Sometimes the client doesn't know best, and you have to take things into your own hands and do what you know is right.

Although, after saying that, generally there won't be a problem to take requests :)

i always accept requests but I always check them out before deciding wether to play them - have learnt the hardway !!!! just sometinmes u get a request for a great tune that u have forgotten about :):)

I am with creature on this one. Its always worth taking requests, but it it has to fit in with the night the paying client wants.
That I think is the the key for me anyway. The person paying the money gets whatever music they want: However, the guests get complementary requests played at a suitable time.

I think Beerfunk, Creature and Paul have it bang on. I really like the Ramsey comparison!
At the nightclub, although it's the owner who's paying me, I am expected to play as many requests as practical/appropriate, but he won't sack me if I miss a few or decide something just won't work. But he will complain to me if lots of punters complain to him that I never play requests.

I think the same is true for mobiles. If a level-headed client is paying to do what you're good at, it's fair for them to expect you to play some requests but not expect you to play them all, unless of course they say different when they book you, then it's up to the DJ to decide to proceed and take the booking if the client says no requests/all requests or what ever.

At last nights wedding function i had a corker - a drunken "best man" asked for daniel powters's had a bad day, especially for the groom. i reminded him of the lyrics and asked if he thought it was suitable !! lol

the majority had been in the hotel all day and were a little worse for wear, one young lady asked me to play anything by girls aloud, while i was playing their version of "i think were alone now" and had already played "something kinda ooh" i wasnt up for an a discussion do i played "jump" lol

I always try to play requests.. but there are some that i wont because it doesnt fit at all.. but if they request a song.. and the lyrics don't fit.. i will normally play it anyway - especially if it is from the client - because they have payed me to provide their disco.

The guys who never do requests are, i presume, the guys who just set the music up to play on a computer and leave it - which, in my opinion, is fine - if the client knows that they work like that.+-

I always go 15 - 30 minutes over the said finishing time if they want me to.. but.. if it is late I will normally not do another 1 - 2 hours as everyone always asks me to.. i even had someone trying to pay be 200 quid for an hour extra.... but he was drunk so i decided not to because he would probs regret it in the morning.

Why?

Surely nothing is 'normal' about a wedding reception - everyone is organised on its own merits and clients can have what they want?

I find more and more clients having faster songs for their first dance these days.

Oh, I see.

To be honest, there are a lot of songs about like that, and I don't really think people take much notice of the lyrics.

When I started DJing years ago I used to play Cherish by Kool and The Gang a lot and lots of people had it for their first dance. I found out a bit later that it was about a girl dieing!

I do a lot of Weddings at a popular hotel in Falkirk and i have to say, weddings are the hardest gigs to play at and are by far the biggest challenge, but having said that i get to play a lot of stuff i wouldnt play at say an 18th birthday party, or even when im doing my club gigs and i do enjoy the satisfaction of a good night when it works out.

requests can be a hit or a miss imo, i usually just give the thumbs up if i have the song and then decide whether it gets played or not ( depending on what im playing at the time of the request or if its a suitable request to begin with), but if i know straight away its a bad idea i say, "sorry i dont have it"

Don't understand how you can say that. Most weddings are easy gigs, everyone's out to have a good night and will usualy dance to anything you play.

Talking of weddings, just booked the venue for mine and now need to find a DJ!

I know what he means, sometimes at weddings the 2 new to each other families are tense/nervous and stiff. Ive seen it so many times, and sometimes they dont get beyond it, but a lot of times the alchol kicks in and changes that. Each wedding is different, and the venue, weather, etc has a lot to do with the atmos too.

I had one wedding in the summer where they put on those big garden games and a bouncy castle for the kids outside was the day england went out of the world cup as well......

everyone left the room after the meal to sit outside ...... at midnight as i packed up ..... they were all still sat outside playing games bouncing etc bride came in halfway through to say everyone outside loved the music but that was the only person i saw.

Many people DONT go to weddings to have a good time. They are there because they feel obliged to go. They do not regularly go out dancing and get there moronic entertainment in front of the telly or propping up the bar. I agree weddings are NOT the easiest gigs to do. Give me a birthday party everytime.

People go to weddings because they feel they have to, but go to Birthdays and other celebrations because they want to, in order to have a good time with their mates.

I'm not so sure I agree with that, maybe in some cases. People feel they have to go to birthday parties as well, and I find weddings to be more exciting than birthdays :)

I rekon it varies between regions, I've allways thought the Scots more likely to party at a wedding than the English.
In reality, it probably even varies between venues in the same town!
I have done some cracking weddings in the past though, just seemed to get more bad than good, that's why I gave them up a few years back.
Like a prat, I've just taken on one for this year and one for next for friends:eek: Must be bonkers :D

Personally I tend to do mainly weddings and anniversarys, and although weddings rarely run on time 90% are trouble free evenings, the other 10% a fight normaly breaks out between family's . Did a wedding once when the groom punched the father of the bride out on the dance floor. Gig ended at 9pm and I went home. Early night but you have to wonder about some people.

sounds similar to one of mine that .... ended with the father of the bride nose to nose with the groom and the words i told my daughter you werent good enough for her and i told her that getting involved with your family was bad news ......10pm end after security turfed them all out ..... all that after 2 evacuations for the flaming tablecloth game.

I did a 40th birthday at the weekend and the girlfriend of the birthday boy leans over the dj booth and says "We don't want this kind of music you can dance to"
At the time I was playing a couple of motown tracks, the dancefroor was packed, she was even dancing herself. She then followed this comment up with "We pay your wages"

The only other time she spoke to me was when she came over and demanded that I stopped playing "I wanna dance with somebody" right away as she didn't like. By this time I had decided to ignore her drunken rants and was even tempted to play it again later.

What can you do with some people. Everyone else had a good time and I even played for an extra half hour due to public demand.

After about 15 mins of Jacksons, Chic etc, a lady comes up and asks us to play something 'disco'.

At a regular karaoke after an attempt at a number "can you turn the mic down, i can hear myself singing".

A pet hate of mine are conversations similar to this:

Punter "Play sumfin' decent mate!"
Me "like what?"
Punter "I dunno, sumfin' decent!"
Me "Well what I'm playing is a request and the dance floor is full"
Punter "Yeah but it's crap"
Me "They like it" (Point to packed dancefloor!)
Punter "Oasis - Champane Supernova, they'll love it!"
Me "Yeah maybe later mate!" (hoping he'll be too drunk to care by then)

What I do now is print out the clients request list and put a copy on each table. This way I can clear myself of any blame when one of their choices bombs, this also gives the guests an idea of what to expect.

I find since I've been doing this I tend to get less of the conversations above........people seem to get into the night more and make requests along the lines of what has been requested by the paying client. :D

Spot on-did that Saturday at a Wedding and had a lot of nice young kids coming up like at a Youth Club making requests from the list.

That's a fab idea, Tony, I like that a lot - I should have cottoned to it myself as when I have the printed list with me to work from people always ask to see it. Can I have my numpty award, now, please?

The only problem I have with printed play-lists is that sometimes people would rather pick something from the list than ask for something genuinely inspired so sometimes you get into a bit of a rut and the requests don't help.

Girl with a heavy South African accent comes up to me and says 'Can you play anything by Randy Jackson?' I say 'I don't think he actually released any solo material, I'm sorry'. Girl walks away obviously thinking I'm mad and at very least incompetent. Of course she actually said Michael Jackson. Cue grovelling apology over mic.

What I do now is print out the clients request list and put a copy on each table. This way I can clear myself of any blame when one of their choices bombs, this also gives the guests an idea of what to expect.

Sounds like an interesting idea.

If I have a long request list with some doubtful choices, I just make sure that I make at least one announcement advising that most/all of the music has been especially selected by the bride & groom.

I'm already on record as disagreeing with this. For me it is a win/win situation. If they bomb it makes me look good and if they do well it fills the floor and helps the evening along and makes me look like a pro. Providing they are not complete bozos and ask nicely I will usually give another jock a SHORT guest spot.

I would never give another jock a guest spot.

Firstly, in my experience, most people who come up & say "I'm a DJ" usually aren't.

Secondly, I don't like other people using or even touching my gear.

Thirdly, if they're rubbish, I'd be regretting giving them a spot in the first place.

I dont like people touching my gear either ..... unless they are blonde female and very sweet .................ooooohhhh............... disco gear ......... no no one uses that except moi :D :D

Agreed! It is a judgement thing. Like I say if they dont look or sound right or ask nicely then it is a no no.
