My gig - Sat 16th Dec

I organised a staff Xmas party for where I work. I bought and cooked the food (everyone did put in £2.50 per person to cover the cost) I got up 6.00am to start cooking etc.

Got to the venue at 6.00pm with my eldest daughter and one of the supervisors who helped put the food out.
I provided a disco at no cost to the company and also managed to get the venue free too.

Party started at 7.30pm.

The night turned out to be very very disappointing. Only 25 people turned up.Nobody danced, I tried all genres. Tried a couple of games, they were OK, but not brill.
I didn't get any feedback at work. I was mortified. Was I that bad? Did they enjoy it?

Today, when I got to work there was a envelope on my desk addressed to me. Thinking it was a Crimbo card from someone at work I opened it, It was a Thank You card from 4 of my colleagues saying

" Thank you for trying to give our party a good night. Sorry the miserable buggers wouldn't get up and dance, you must feel right p****** off with them. Never mind some of us enjoyed it"

I thought the gesture was sweet. Then as I was about to leave work today another envelope had appeared on my desk, I opened it and it was another Thank You card, this time signed by the boss saying

"Many thanks for the hard work and planning of Sat night"

Inside the card was a £10 voucher for the shop that I work in

Well, not quite sure what to think really. I was on a right downer after the gig. Even the bar manager of the venue couldn't believe how disappointing the night was. I have done a fair few gigs at the venue, and she'd never seen a gig quite like it. I was that low, I even considered just packing it all in. My hubby said it was their problem if they didn't make the best of it.

I worked very hard getting it all organised, provided entertainment etc. I didn't do it to get anything out of it. I did it to try to get everyone together and have some fun.

Oh well...............................

It's truly horrid when you get no support from colleagues when you've bust a gut isn't it. Well - you did your best (worked your backside off by the looks of it!) and those who appreciated it told you!

Ungrateful people! Shame but it happens. People you work with can be a funny lot and I remember trying to motivate people to join in at an an office I used to work at was like squeezing blood out of a stone.

Still, it was their loss. I'm sure they missed out on a good evening and would of enjoyed themselves if they had been there. Looks good for you with your boss though. I'm sure all the effort you put into arranging the evening and being proactive in doing it won't go unnoticed.

At least some people thanked you and admited to haveing a good time - I thought the best one was the card and message you got from your Boss - not many of them would consider doing anything like that anymore.

I think people arnt as easy going this year (possibly down to not drinking as much or other pressures) an dthere not letting go when they get chance to party.

Part of the crowd Lynne an dme were at yesterday came up afterwards and said a cracking nite and great choice of music - did they get up n dance or even apear to enjoy it no ........ just goes to show

It must have been a real downer on the night but, afterwards, it does show that some of your colleagues appreciated your effort. Well done to you for putting yourself out.

Sorry to hear about that Kaz, but remember work parties are always difficult as a lot of people dont like socialising with other s from work. Like axman said focus on the positive. Ihad a bad one this week due to an inconsiderate manager, almost made me want to give up the job.

As the job was passed on to me by a member of this forum I wont mention the places name as it was very kind of him to give me the work and it is by no means his fault. I played a place in leicester last week for a function that provides own gear and has a live band in the evening. A lot of people expected I only had to play background music till about 9:45 while they ate. Then play some more upbeat to get them in the mood ready for a live band. Then when band finsh at 11:30 continue music until 12:30 when im due to finish. Night starts and its going great about 250 people turn up all in good mood. A few people come up during backgorund music with the usual 'i forgot who sings this' kind of questions but all seeming to enjoy it. 9.45 comes along and I start with lambada loads of people get up (about 2 thirds of them infact) so I continue with similar music all having fun laughing etc no requests so I ask if anyone want a song to let me know.
No one comes up so continue with the music. Come 10:30 band takes a few sit back down but most stay up for them. Band have a pretty good session finish at 11:30 so I tell everyone to give them a round of applause (they earnt it ). And I start with a bit of disco, then I get some requests for some newer music, only requests I have so I move on to some newer stuff, s.o.s scissor sisters, beyonce you get the idea. They love it no more requestswhole evening everyone and i mean everyone is dancing (have the pics to prove it to). Finish at 12:30 with tina turner simply the best as it was the last request I was given said goodnight merry christmas to the croud and turned off. Croud start singing to me (and i mean whole croud about 200 of em) the dj's the best , better than all the rest. To the tune of tina turner. As I left I was patted on back hand shaken, offered drinks thanked the whole lot a really nice croud. As I walked out I said to the manager how much they seemed to enjoy it and she agreed.
Left went home end of story.........I wish

Couple a days later i ring friend from forums to fill him in on what happened on night (feeling a bit a pride on a job well done). To be told I was complained about by the venue. According to them all i played was black lace cheesy songs all night and didnt use the mic at all.
So I guess they are thinking about a different night and forget it, i was back there this week so I thought would raise the matter. Turned out it was a bit of a misunderstanding. They say all I played all night was new songs that no one danced to and that io didnt use the mic. Please see previous comments for what actually happened. And as for mic work I was making dedications all night as well as the usual comments on songs.
Then I spoke to some of the staff on the evening who were there last time as well. Turns out the owner wasnt happy that I had more people up dancing than the band did so decided to complain about me.

A fact confirmed when it turned out the owner was the lead singer in the band that night as well. One of the staff heard him talking to another person at the venue that 'if he gets more people up dancing than I do when im on he'll never play here again.' (this being about me)
So as before did almost exactly the same, I had whole room dancing, when he finished his set he had a bout 15 - 20 people dancing. I came back on at about 11:40, wham packed dancfloor for the rest of night.
Come the end I say goodnight get a round of applause. i go up the owner to say hello , as he hadnt introduced himself to me yet. Said hi i hear your the owner how are you, takes a look at me and says so I hear turns his back on me and ignores me. Walk out and the manager takes me by the arm and says it was a great night. It seems the owner is a bit insecure in his own abilities and won't let anyone else work there who upstages him.
Cant beleave he complained and plain lied just to make sure I dont upstage him again, seriously how petty is that.

And for the person who got me the gig, thanks for the work and im sorry that you recieved a complaint about me over this. All I can say is that I have the pictures to prove what really happened as well as other staff members from the night.

Sorry about the long post but its been getting at me all weekend, first complaint I've had in 19 years and as you can imagine it upset me more than a little. As im sure yous did Kaz, anyone else had any bad experiences this christmas? luckily this was my only bad one so far (touch wood)

we have all got tales of woe in this particular subject
and i bet every single one of us has wanted to throw the
towel in on quite a few occasions.
but dont worry the person on this forum who supplied you
with the bookings will know the score.
try not to take it to heart and move on,tomorrows another
day,
there,s a good old saying :
you can please some of the people some of the time,but
you will never please all of the people all of the time.
so what i do now is please the client and everyone else there
