The number of tracks really depends on which bit rate you rip at.

If you rip at 320K then you should be able to fit about 5-6000 tracks. Using WAV then about 1500.

Im currently ripping my CDs at 320k and its surprising how big some files are--10 meg for a few songs.:eek: Yawn!!!!!!!!!!

I would work nearer to 5000.

That’s right, in that case the internal drive size is not so important since your library will "currently" or eventually exceed whatever largest single hard disk you can find.

I am about half way through ripping my collection over for digital decks and I have filled about 30gig so far of unique songs (no doubles as I turf them out advantage of digital) and that is ripping at 320kbps. But saying that only about 10gig are regulaly played songs. The rest are album tracks and sections I only use for special events 50's 60's 70's nights etc.
If you want whole music collection on its probably not going to happen but if you just put on regualar choices and have rest on an external drive you only have to use if songs are requested.

40GB will be be enough for some, not for others: nothing will ever please everyone! If it were larger, there would be just as many people complaining that it was too big and that it would be better if the unit were cheaper without such a large drive, so as far as I am concerned, it's a moot point.

However, my question about using both the internal and external drive would be: can they work together or do you have to use one or the other? ie if you are searching for a particular track, do you need to know if it is on the internal or external drive?

You can use the drives together, yes. Plus you can connect portable MP3 players to it.

40GB caters for 90% of users, the other 10% will just have to connect another drive and quit complaining! :D

I loaded 5,000 files into my HD2500 sample (with more space to spare) and ran the above program. It found 1,095 dups out of the 5,000 loaded, which gained me even more space.

Yes, they can work together.
There is a SOURCE button on each deck which provides access to all your external devices. We can support up to (4) external storage devices + a USB keyboard

For example:

USB 1 = 500GB external drive with 50,000 files
USB 2 = 500GB external drive with 50,000 files
USB 3 = 500GB external drive with 50,000 files
USB 4 = 500GB external drive with 50,000 files
Internal HDD = About 6,000 files

No because then the player is 100% dependant on what you connect to it.
No device = No playback

At least with our clever machine, all you need is power and its ready to go with 6,000 possible files to pick from, although a mobile DJ only plays about 100 songs per 5-hr gig.

Now every DJ should have a backup plan. We offer a 3-way redundant system for backup.
Internal HDD > External USB > Traditional CD playback via our D4500/D4000

Sure 40GB may not be enough for some folks, but the VALUE of having the on-board HDD outweighs whatever “volume capacity” with ease of mind of having redundancies without the extra cost. That’s why our system design is much smarter than our competition

Is it feasible to use WAV for everything?

Isnt that only recorded in REAL time---like recording on an old tape recorder or mini disc player.

It would take a heck of a long time, as long as it takes to play EVERY track you have:eek:

You're wrong :D

WAV is alot quicker than ripping mp3 as there's no compression phase. It just makes an exact copy of the audio. Takes about 10seconds per track.

Did I say that? No.

I have approximately 6000 tracks, and I have been DJing for longer than you. OK, I only do your average cheesy disco, no speciality nights such as rock nights or the like. Very rarely do I get asked for a track which I haven't got, and when I do, it's an obscure track which no-one else would be interested in anyway.

I have trimmed my collection to shave off the dead wood, and even now there must be 1000-2000 tracks, or maybe more, which never see the light of day.. :(

Just because it doesn't hold your entire collection, it can still hold the core material which you will need to call upon at most gigs. As I mentioned before, 4000 tracks is definitely enough to cover 18ths/21sts, 50ths, weddings etc. Furthermore, I'm confident you would only ever play half of that.

Well I only ever brought the point up because i would imagine most would want their entire collections on there. Its only you that's said anything about only putting certain tracks on.

I mean if Denon released a CD played that would only play half of your CDs would you say "oh, its ok.. it'll play the ones i'd use most often" :D

Point taken, but with all things considered, 40GB is not bad. Bearing in mind you can connect almost any USB storage device to it, connecting extra media is not much of a hassle. It also provides an excuse to treat yourself to one of these (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Creative-Zen-Vision-Multimedia-Player/dp/B000JP76TO)... ;)

It would save most having to buy anything extra like an external drive. Since each device has its own database, you would need to search each one separately.

However, your search item remains in the window as you select each source, so you dont need to re-type it each time.

The hardware is done, we are just finishing up the software side.
