how bad im shocked....

its now 3.25pm on nye and since 2.30pm i have taken 3 phone calls from people who have JUST been let down by their djs .... booked months ago.

why leave it so late to cancel unless its a real dyer catastrophe? surely if your ill you know youre ill at like 9am?

im the kind of guy that really feels for people that this happens to because you cant help out and with 5 hours to go theyre up against it.

Been the same here as well. Taken 2 calls this morning and 1 this afternoon although i think the 1 this afternoon was the wife of one this morning.
Same old story... DJ has just rung to say he can't do tonight due to being ill.
Makes you wonder.
I've helped one out by using backup equipment.. not happy about using it but its helping someone out that has been let down.

I've had one or 2 cals for NYE bookings come in a bit late, but just due to the clients lack of forthought when it comes to bookign early. 3 in a couple of hours sounds a bit suspect, sure its not the same guy took loads of deposits and done a runner? unfortunatly tis the season to get ripped off.

1. They've had a better offer, i.e. dj A has a gig paying £300, dj B in another place REALLY cannot make his gig for whatever reason so cancels, the venue rings around happens to call dj A. Dj A with a sharp intake of breathe (you know the one, the same as when the washing machine engineer comes round) says oh, well at this late hour it's gonna cost you £500, ok says the venue we'll pay. Dj A cancels his original booking and the chain has started.

2. I've heard locally of dj's double booking, then setting up his own little Dutch auction, he plays at the highest bidder, playing one of against the other, nice eh!

Anyway have a cracking night all, party on down.

Agree with all thats been said. It is so often the case that where they have been let down it is because all the arrangements have been casual.

I've always suspected that last minute let-downs (illness, car stolen, gear blew up last night etc etc) are really the DJ's who take a booking early on and then accept a better offer subsequent to that. In an attempt to make it look genuine they leave it until the very last second to inform the original client and then go perform at the higher payer.

Am I just too cynical?

there's a lesson to customers who book with cheap & cheerful outfits with no paperwork, they haven't a leg to stand on.

That is what SEDA was set up for. All responsible professions (architects, doctors, lawyers, tree surgeons, central heating engineers etc) have a trade association which they usually (but not always) have to qualify to join and pay a yearly fee for the privilege and prestige. Most of these bodies are run by a committee who have a code of practice and can and will expel members from the organization if they are naughty. It doesnt stop the problem but it helps.

I think its shameful - altho real illness may be reasnable for some - but then again many of us take a pertner to help them out so still should not cancell.

I have had tonights booking since last new years eve booking - only 150.00 but then again can use me small rig - 3 course meal and drinks incuded :):) and i get 1st refusal at any events held at the pub.... I have had a few phonecalls for bookings for tonight which have offered me far mor emoney but a deal is a deal in my mind....

If these cancelations are because they got a better offer then they need to be named and shamed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

last december i was working for my old boss, and i done a full month at the same hotel doing xmas parties then finishing the year off on hogmany, (hogmany bash full of 60-90 year olds on a coach tour fro north of england), i was paid £50 a night (walk in job) and £100 for NYE, anyway last december he was booked again for this year (same thing), I agreed then to do it, before deciding to set up my own business in April, I had offers for the whole of DEc including one three days ago for NYE prepared to pay me £700, even though i told her about 10 times i was already booked and couldn't do it, i had equiptment but no DJ, but i stuck to my word towards my old boss as i gae it last year and no amout of money would make me let anyone down. He asked me again today to do the same next year - but i declined as i will obviously have my own bookings and I usually charge a shedload more than he does on average anyway. By the way my night was full of foxtrots, tango's and waltzes, (100% sober as well as i was driving) think the newest track i played all night was the eagles take it easy lol, but hey the punters enjoyed it and so did the hotel. Hope everyone elses night went great...all the best for 2007! I am away for a can of Tennants....:)

Although, you must be a bit annoyed that you couldn't put a DJ out for the other jobs, and took a cut?
