400W UV cannon - explosion risk

I used a 400W UV cannon last week, 1/2 way through the night when everyone was singing happy birthday to the birthday boy, what I initially though was pyrotechnics turned out to be the lamp exploding, showering the area in front of it with glass.

Although the timing could not have been better, and no one was injured or affected, this appears to be a major incident in my book, so if you have one be warned. I cannot identify the lamp manufacturer as it is in a million pieces on the floor of the venue, but I will visit the retailer to take this further.

I seem to recall someone else mentionning this nasty issue in the distant past.

Crikey! That's pretty bad, you want a refund on that as well. I've never used one, but I've heard from a few people that those UV cannons are pants for what you're paying, in terms of brightness, output etc. Is this true?

I've heard of a couple of incidents where this has happened. I had 4 of the units myself, and are reluctant to take them to shows for that reason.

Exactly the same thing happened to me, the canon was the 400w type and had been on for about 30 mins and the glass just exploded leaving a bright filament inside, very scary, no one was on the dance floor at the time. Thank goodness!!!

Bloody hell! Surely these sorts of things are identified in CE testing?? If this is a known fault across the line, they should be banned! :eek:

I was thinking about getting a uv cannon, dont think I will bother, or is the make that is causing this? having worked in a disco shop they hired 2 cannons out allthe time and they never exploded.

I believe it's just the cheaper lamps that have the problems.

Surely they have a gauze in place - if not - why not fit one?

They do have gauzes, but I'd imagine the glass has shattered into such small pieces that they've gone straight through it.

I've had the same problem here and have stopped using mine now.
