Hello to many of my friends from across the pond.

I'm finding this site to be a wealth of knowledge and a solid site to experience the views of fellow DJs. I'm located in Tampa, Florida - USA

What sort of stuff do you do? Weddings etc?

I know things are a lot different for mobile DJs over there, it will be nice to have a different perspective.

Hello Professor and :welcome2: from across the pond! We don't get too many visitors from the USA, so it would be good to get your input on how things are done differently over there.

From your other post..... Sorry - can't say I recognise the name "Phil Ashland"..... but then I only know most members by their forum handle. Who is he?

Op's I meant Phil Hulton of HeadlineDJ based in the UK.

Thanks Everyone I will enjoy networking with you.

Out of curiousity, over here if you book a mobile disco it is 'standard' to have full kit including lights, but we understand that over with you the lighting rig is not standard, and comes as an 'extra'. Is that the case or have things changed / changing?

I assume you are talking about Pee Cee?

He is a member of the site, yes, but hasn't been on for a while.

PM me if you want to know where he can be found more regularly. :)

I have a very large light show and used it less than five times in 2006 for weddings.

Corporate and school events used the majority of the time and when they request lighting it's an add-on - not standard. However, it's not that way everywhere in the states - In the northern states in many ares it's standard and very expected. I used to live up north and dragged lighting to every event I love it here.

In the Disco's they have lighting, PA and a booth I bring my mixing tools and music.

Good Question

Hi there and welcome, as some of us have just bought the new American USB reader made by Cortex can you tell us if these type of products are popular over there in the States with DJs.

They look pretty useful once the music is set up correctly on hard drives.

Or are you more into laptops and CD players?

thanks

Controllers in general are used by many. Much like in the UK here some like them some don't. I've worked with several developers and as a beta tester for many hardware controllers, I was even an original Cortex beta-tester.

The developers of the Cortex unit are from your side of the pond.

I use vinyl, CD and Lossless audio files to mix at present.

Thats useful thanks for that--excuse my ignorance but what are Lossless audio files ?

Are they similar to MP3s?

thanks

Thanks Darren.

Presumably used where Hard drive space is not an issue.

I don't use MP3's any longer which are Lossy audio files I use FLAC and WAV which are LossLess.

With the affordability of hard drives have full range audio is the way too go.

Just being nosey again, what sort of collection (in terms of numbers of tracks) do you carry?

Nosey!

Professor Jam

My music collection is hugh. Over one-hundred-thousand tracks if I incorporate everything including vinyl and promotionals.

However, I don't bring all tracks to all events - In the Disco current and unique tracks are important - I would not bring It's Raining Men to a break beat or trans focused event. For Mobile DJing I have a foundation library that covers a vast majority of the styles I'll need - Taking into account the uniquness of a spicific event I add to the foundation as needed.

Here is a foundation I created a few years ago to assist some DJs that were starting out and didn't know where to start - Note this is focused on the states and you may require a different collection.
