How can i just for fun, record singers on my regular friday night spot on my laptop i'm using pcdj with kj plug in and someone asked me to record them the other week, since then i've given it a lot of thought and i imagine it could be done i just don't know how do i go through my mixer or straight onto laptop and then disc please help (these recordings a strictly for fun and i may give them away to my locals who support me every week with the same songs every week)

To record vocals, just use Recording software such as 'Cool Edit Pro', and use the line input on your PC.

I wouldn't want to be making copies of backing tracks. Even though it's only "for fun" as you say, you are illegally copying licensed material.

Yep, hook up a minidisc recorder or something to one of the mixer outputs - simple as that. You can do it all through software, but I wouldn't recommend it, unless you're confident your laptop is 100% stable.

Aye, although this was a while ago :D. It's now "Adobe Flash Player" and its goodbye to Fireworks and hello more Photoshop.

Is that legal????

Serious question. I would have thought that recording someone singing would contravene copyright or distribution laws, I am assuming that they are not recording songs they have wrote themselves.

Out of interest, does anyone know if it's legal to record the vocals of a track only?

I do know that vocals are recorded by 'sound-a-likes' in the case of samples being refused for certain songs. For example - Black Legend - You See The Troubloe With Me, and Cleptomaniacs - All I Do were originally released on promo with the original artist's vocals (Barry White/Stevie Wonder). When they were refused permission to use the vocals, they simply arranged for the vocals to be recorded by someone else.
