Mixer advice please

Some help please on small DJ mixers.

Im going to buy a small compact mixer with cross deck faders as a dedicated unit to use with my Cortex.

I have seen the Behringer DX 626 mentioned by Daz---looks good although im trying to get a bit smaller if possible.

My main question though is this--I want something that can give good bass end boost.

I see from the spec on the Behringer 2 band eq model mention of
Each stereo channel sports a great-sounding 2-band kill EQ with 32 dB of attenuation.

The existing small mixer im using temporarily has only 15db--Stageline IMG borrowed from my son:eek:

Does this mean that the Behringer will give me more tone control over Bass and treble--- or is that a red herring so to speak.:confused:

Any other suggestions for a small basic no frills mixer of this sort with cross faders and good bass end, (maybe only two eq controls) would be appreciated.

Hi Daz--Not a problem as long as its under £100, compact and does the job.

They near enough do - well about 2 miles down the road anyway..

It doesn't help the pitch when you've got egg chasers on there too:mad: ;)

Well the stageline is 6.5" wide and very neat--anyway size isnt everything:D
so ignore it for a moment.

Whats this great-sounding 2-band kill EQ with 32 dB of attenuation

Not absolutely sure Alan - to be honest, I've only had it working once when I bought it, as it's just a spare. What I do know is that it sounds reasonable for a 60 quid mixer and has 3 channels and separate mic channel, all with 3 band eq on.

I suppose the attenuation is the amount the eq will boost particular frequencies on each channel. I'm sure someone more technical will correct me!

Im using a mixer with 15db and the Behringer has 32db attenuation which hopefully has more bass end --if so sold to the Caller with a silly hat in Northamptonshire:D

Spose I can always ring the DJ shop tomorrow and ask.

Just looked at the pictures of the Behringer mixers and they seem to have -32DB to cut the signal but only +12DB to boost---similar to my existing mixer which I think is +15db---maybe no difference.

Thanks Steve, im just wanting something with a punchy bass end as the compressed files on the Cortex have less bass than when I use CDs,

You’re not going to get a good mixer for under £100 tbh. Have a look at Allen & Heath I run a xone62 excellent sound from it.

e.g. Behringer is 32 CUT and only 12 BOOST.

My exisiting fader mixer has 15 CUT AND !5 BOOST

My main mixer amp has 15 CUT and 15 BOOST

Maybe ill try Spins idea and record everything in WAV which takes up more space apparently and gives the equivalent sound of a CD--luckily I have a big hard drive!

No need. Go ahead and rip to mp3 format, but at a high bitrate - at 320Kbit/s you won't be able to tell it's compressed and you'll still save at least 50% disk space over wav's. There are other, better compression formats (FLAC, AAC etc.) but for sheer compatibility with playback software and devices stick with mp3.

Im not saying quality is bad---its brilliant--top and middle excellent--but my particular system seems to be a little light on the bass side using these compressed files compared to CD.

Only SOME tracks--particularly older ones from 50s 60s 70s

More modern tracks no problem.

May be to do with the inbuilt sound card on Cortex, maybe my system.

I will try WAV files but would prefer to buy a mixer that does the job

I save all my MP3's at 320 and they play out through my Denon with absolutely no difference to a CD (the Denon will play MP3 files direct). Running a £140 Citronic mixer and I have to say I have never had any need to boost the bass - maybe notching it slightly over the middle notch.

it does sound as if there is some issue with either the quality of your MP3's or the Cortex itself (you may remember that when the discussions first started I wanted to understand what the sound quality was like - does this mean it's a little light on bass?). If the rest of your kit is running well, there really shouldn't be a huge need to increase bass by that much.

I do believe that Matt has a Tosh Laptop---the one that was being discussed recently and yes I think there may be an issue with the Cortex although nothing to get excited about.

I say this with confidence as Dragonfly has told me he is experiencing the same thing with his---less bass apparently from the Cortex than Cds

However he has plenty of bass in reserve on his system and when using Cortex all night you will adjust your settings to suit the sound produced, presently Dragonfly is using a mixture of Cortex and CDs until his collection is ripped on to Hard drive.

I still think I may solve this by buying a mixer that can boost the bass end

Matt has a Laptop so I think thats what he uses.

Dragonfly also has a similar situation---when he plays through the Cortex the bass response is down on normal CDs even with MP3s ripped at 320.

I think I just need as Matt says a slight increase in the bass end by possibly buying a better mixer--the overall Cortex quality is excellent (to my ear)

Sorry, let me clarify - I have a DND4000 which will play MP3 from a CD. Just about to start a new thread on that though (so I don't hi-jack yours Alan).

I think I would just be a little concerned about needing to increase the bass EQ that much to get a suitable sound. As I think we are agreeing, you shouldn't need to and the fault (if you want to call it that) certainly seems to be with the Cortex. I wonder if boosting the bass through a bigger range EQ on a mixer will just result in a poorer but bassier sound rather than a better sound?

Don't forget the Mackies are only a 12" driver Dave and you may need to boost the bass on the eq a bit.

If I'm not using the sub (s) then I do turn the eq up slightly.

as it is for normal CDs, seems to be mainly some of the older 60s 70s stuff.

With Cds I dont need bass eq beyond zero normally, if anything cut a bit.

The set up I use is Peavey XR800f Powered mixer with Pro 15 tops and Subs.

This is not standard Disco gear, I bought this for all purpose use, PA, Disco, Barn Dance, instrumentation etc for musicians who sometimes want to play through the PA.

I have been putting the CD players through a mixer that has faders and two eq controls and that sounded very satisfactory during Xmas period.

Bear in mind I feed that into an input channel on the Mixer Amp which itself has 3 eqs treble, middle and bass.

Im testing this in my house which is not ideal but gives me a good idea as to likely quality on the gig.

Now im probably being a bit picky and some tracks do really punch the bass out out but I want the sound to be as good as I can get all the time.

Dragonfly has had similar situation with his kit ( Mackie ) I just think I maybe need a better mixer with more bass--im waiting for my Disco shop to ring back :bang: :bang:

Thanks Colin, see what you mean about the cut rather than boost.

Ill play around with some mixers first before I do any more--I dont know if the cabinets would handle a load more bass---just a bit more would be nice.

Just to update on this--have put my back up KAM mixer in line with the existing small mixer and it all sounds fine.

Houston we have loads of bass!

Will probably buy a new mixer from my DJ shop (when they ring back) after comparing it with the bass response of my existing mixer making sure its at least as good.

Impressed with the speed of track selection on Cortex when used with a miniature keyboard.
