Secure Wireless

Might seem somewhat dumb, but since having wireless, I haven't password protected my connection.

Looking at my internet useage, it does seem that I am not the only one who has been tapping in! There is "internet phone" use on there and we certainly don't do that!

Two questions, how do I make things more secure - using a Linksys router if that helps.

2nd, any way I can catch whoever else is using it?

they would need to know what your network ssid key was, plus if you use a WEP key its encrypted, check here (http://www.comcast.net/help/faq/index.jsp?faq=Security118072) for some tips n tricks

i wouldnt bother using wep it can be cracked in as little as 5 minutes very easily,

the best protection is WPA-PSK With radius and Biometric Authentication

My wireless is WEP (it has to be because I'm running wireless bridges instead of just access points) My neigbours are in their 50s and enjoy cars not hacks!

ITs not your neighbours u need to worry about,

has been known in recent times for peadophiles to hack into peoples wifi to download indecent images, in one case someone was prosecuted for doing just this in london,

Its very easy to do alot of guide on the internet but if your happy then your happy

Anyone setting up an internet connection without any sort of enrcyption in this day and age is stupid and really has't read much into what they are setting up.


You really want something like WEP 128 bit encryption nothing less will do.

Yes, it is very advisable to make things secure, and I'm sure that there are members who would welcome advice, but suggesting that they are stupid for not knowing something is more likely to discourage people from asking questions in the first place...... and that goes for ALL subjects - everyone's got to start somewhere!

why not stick with good old fashioned "wired"
no much simpler and none of the problems outlined in the posts above!
personally, if I can't plug it into a wallport, I don't trust it.

see there in may lie a problem what with laptops now becoming more affordable and space being a premium in peoples houses running a wire the length of your house may not always be the answr that works.

Most portable devices are becoming more and more wifi compatible so therefore it only makes sense to use a wireless internet connection. but in that people need to read into the technonogy that they are going to use. now certain isp's that give free wireless modem pre config them with encryption so that the end user does not have to worrie about setting it up other than typing in the key on there pc and away they go nice a secure.

but some users who already hve internet connections and move over to wireless routers, firstly may not understand or even know about wireless security and those get the problem or highjackers that rice has found he has. This is why i say that really if someone purchasing such devices does not understand how, what and why they need secure connections then they should seek the advice of prof'ls who can set this up for them in the correct way and then the don't have to worry about this.
