Please let me know if this is so way of disco that it's not allowed - but generally as a community you guys seem to have a diverse range of knowledge...

Our 4 year old Bush widescreen TV has started producing a high pitched whistle - not all the time but when it starts you're stuck with it. Question is, anyone know what it is and if it's worth repairing (as it only cose £200 a new) - doesn't go away by changing channels or lowering sound, but does stop for a short while when you bash the top!

If it's not worth repairing, we will be shopping for a 32" LCD - but don't want to spend the earth. Yes I know you get what you pay for, but what is uit we should look out for - I see thing like - contrast ratio, CD/M2 and reolution. Are there some "don't go lower" rating to watch for?

Also what budget brands are good - seen a nice Bush and Argos have a nice looking Wharfedale... budget hopefully £400 - £500 very top!

But again, if this thread is so non-disco related, very sorry.

Probably dust. Try taking the back off (unplug it first!!) and let loose with the hoover and one of those 'can of air' things in all the nooks & crannies. Or a soft paintbrush.

Could be, but it's also likely it's a sign that the high voltage (EHT) section is on it's way out, then it's not worth repairing.
Value wise, in perfect condition, probably £100 or less if it's 32" :(

chances are that the linear capacitor has a fault or the line out transformer has a fault chances aremore on the linear capacitor it can some times be solved buy coating the capacitor with lacour.

or it could always be your flux capacitor requiring 1.21 gigwatts of power.

But have to say its time to put ya hand in your pocket and get a proper modern TV

Searched and searched today for a 32 inch at a good price, wife came home and said how big can we get!

So in the end, although not buying it from Argos (link simply for demonstration), we are probably going for one of these:

Right guys, TV arrived, plugged in, but sky picture in particular not as good as expected - what should I use - Scart or SVHS. Using scart right now, would it help to go get an svhs lead?

A good quality SVHS lead should be a bit better because the composite video signal is split, maybe you need an all pins wired scart lead if the picture is that bad, could be only using comp vid and not RGB as you would expect.
ANYWAY, buy a decent SVS lead and dont forget you need separate audio leads because SVHS is video only.
