One possibly to beware of ?

Had a call this morning from a company claimingthe be called the Verification Association. Saying that due to recent bad press they were looking to get 4 top dj's in the area to recommend for work hmmmm?

So i said really no strings ayy. And guess what the phone goes dead hee hee really they should look to verify themselves first.

They're the same as uFindUs.. don't touch them with a barge poll. I had to send them a letter threatening legal action as they were trying to get me into a deal that i hadn't even agreed to. They promised all sorts on the phone and then didn't come through and kept making excuses saying the person on the phone shouldnt have said what he did etc.

Also, despite me cancelling them, my ad still appears on their site, and i've not had one single hit through to my website in over a year!

I've just had a phonecall from the verification Association as well! - they provide an opportunity to register your business with them, have your references confirmed, use their logo on stationery etc and have a free advert on 118 trades- and their only listing 4 DJs per area! and all for the measly sum of £699 for 18 months! Actually he then knocked off £100, and then came down to £499, and finally as a special offer as he was a DJ as well and he liked me - down to £299!!!!

Almost bit his hand off!! NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Further enquiry shows that they have already signed up one "TOP DJ" in my area, who is a £75 ropelight and screens affair! - so god knows how they got him to pay, for that money he could have bought eight more red soundlab cabs!!!

Likewise....he managed 49 seconds on the phone with me....and hated being called 'mate' all through the conversation....so I said "I'm not your mate..."

That's pretty good I can tell you - 20 seconds is the record before they hang up!

Just been onto their website and they have some 'great' blurb:

"118trades.com also distributes a high quality full colour directory of trusted trades people and businesses to over 3 million homes across the UK on a regional basis. And their Freephone directory enquiry service on 0800 24****** allows customers to access their directory listings at any time of the day or night (ideal for any household emergencies)"


Never received anything from them, they aren't listed in our local phonebooks and never seen that number before. Typical pants marketing company that wear spurs and stetsons if you ask me! :D

Actually the last time UFindUs rang me then said they'd found me on the VA and starting talking about how VA had a bad rep etc... the irony!!!

think yourself lucky they acknowledged someone had said it to you i had a prob last year where i agreed to advertising at 120 quid for a year in a wedding directory then 4 days later got a call from them telling me what date my 120 quid would be going out ........ EACH MONTH!!!! WWWWWWOOOOOOAAHHHH !!!!!

they just denied that their rep would have said anything of the sort as it was not true so legal letter sent and not heard anything for 8 months and no money gone as of course i stopped it.

I had a call from the verification association also, about 6 months ago. They started the call by making out they wanted to engage us as their main provider of disco/karaoke etc. soon found out though what they really wanted. Never got another call from them.

Daniel Corby - The main man. Got a mobile number if you want it. Really nice guy!! I had so many problems withh 118 Trades. I had to spend probably 10 hours + on the phone trying to get my money back but eventually did. All £700 of it. PHEW!!!

Just got my call. Asked them what number they'd dialled. "0800...." I interrupted and asked him where I should send the invoice for the call forwarding charge as it clearly states on my website that canvassers are not welcome and guess what? Yep - he hung up.

Therefore I claim the record at 17 seconds and I have the call log on my mobile as proof! :cool:

I had a call from some media company telling me that my advert has now gone into a booket for primary schools and is ready for delivery!!!!!!

Now the thing is this folks:-

1) I have never heard of this media company (can not remember their name)
2) I do NOT do advertising with these sort of people

When I asked the girl who phoned for her contact details she said she was going out of the office and could not give me her number because the company "Dont give it out"

After I challenged her about this elusive advert she hung up and nothing more has been heard???

Occasionally they hit on someone who may be confused about what and who (maybe they do lots of advertising with lots of agencies) or they get someone's Mrs or whatever and get a verbal 'OK' which is then followed by a whopping great bill for services rendered. Explanation when challenged = "well we got an OK from XYZ person, and here's a recording of the conversation to prove it".

I have just caught up with this thread. I had a call from them a month or so back. I listened to their pitch as I had some free time. He asked me all the usual questions. How long have you been in business? 40 years. How many nights a week do you work? 5. Would you like more bookings? No.
Best bit was that he said they would provide me with a plastic identity card to make myself look more prefessional. I lost it at that point and asked him how his plastic card was going to make me look more professional after 40 years in the business. With tears rolling down my cheeks from laughing I told him to get a life.

Just ask them to put all their promises in writing.... it usually sends all the pushy salespersons running for cover!

Alternatively, at the start of the call, ask if they mind if you record the call for future reference..... that should stop all the rubbish they usually spout! :eek:
