Found this little strange item today:

Not a good make & the light is too weak to be of any use (75W), but what an interesting idea for space-saving on the lighting bar - combining a lighting effect and a smoke machine in one unit! :D

Think of it more as a fogger with very bright "power" light :rolleyes:

Make for a little fill in on the rig or maybe interesting on the floor :cool:

I reckon that unit is useless unless your doing a tiny venue (and i mean tiny) 75w? I didn't think you could see light that was rated in double figures! The smoke machine is only 400w too, when the smallest smoke machines you want to touch are rated 700w, so i imagine the heat up time in that unit would be a while....and even then you wouldn't get much smoke!

I use two American DJ DynoFog II (1000 watts) for the floor under my table pointing out to the dance floor. I use two Chauvet F650's(450 watt) on my lighting truss just for my lights. Next to the foggers under my table I use two par38 cans to achive this other things effect. I use 150 watt flood lights. I match the gels to the colors of the event. I also have a Mr. Cool fogger for the dry ice effect. I guess what I am saying is just get a couple par38 cans for 10.00 to 15.00 each and use those for the same but better effect.

I guess I should have mentioned I dont use them all at once and not all of them are there at every event. The smallest place I have ever done a job was 1200 sq ft. Most places around here are huge and have 12 to 15 foot ceiling heights. I guess over there you all have those older buildings that are very small? We only have one place here that has an upstairs. Here's a funny story. One time one of the f650's got loose from its wing nut while mounted on my truss and it slipped and pointed to the ceilling, right where the smoke detector was. The fire department showed up and the room had to be cleared. I fixed it before they got there and the 25 smokers at the back door got blamed for it and the door had to be closed the rest of the night. I told the bride and groom it was my slip up but neither of them smoked and we all just laughed and everyone danced on through the night. Oh yeah and its called fog here not smoke. Non toxic,scented fog. I use scents in my foggers to make it smell very nice.

I.E. Using 80% Distilled water & 20% White vinigar??

What can you use that won't set off the smoke detectors, or is it you can use current smoke machines/foggers, whatever you want to call them, as long as you have the smoke lying just above the floor.

Need to think ahead for when the smoking ban comes in.;)

Yes I've heard about dry ice, something to do with the amount of water molecules. ;) Will check with our technical chap, who recommends them.

They are two VERY VERY different things! :eek:

Low lying or chilled fog is just that, it's just normal fog cooled down so it stays low until it warms up when it drifts up and evaporates away.

Dry Ice is frozen carbon dioxide which turns into low smoke when slightly heated, it then behaves a bit like the chilled fog, but more effective.

Once both are on the floor they have a similar effect and one is no more or less significantly dangerous than the other.

However :eek:

Dry Ice is supplied as blocks of frozen CO2 which will severly burn skin if touched :eek:
It has to be handled properly in a controlled manner i.e. keep away from children/drunk people etc. The machines themselves are full of water and require carefull handling.

Dry Ice isn't really suitable for disco use, it is more a theatrical effect.
H&S wise, you should have someone who is responsible for the dry ice effect around all the time it is in use, whom is fully aware of how to handle the CO2 and use it safely.
Although not quite in the league of pyrotechnics it is still something to be treated with the utmost care and respect.

My foggers are cleaned everytime they come back from an event. I use fogger clean, which will be ran through them just like fog juice. I have used dry ice in the early years of my DJ business and for halloween night haunted houses and yards. It does not set off fire, smoke or any alarms at all. The draw back? It is to stinking exspencive and if you touch it it will bond to your fingers like glue and can cause you to loose some skin. I havent used a hazer so I am not sure about that question. I have seen some hazers that do not use an internal heater to heat up fluid so it is 0 warm up time, so maybe thats the difference. I use the American DJ Mr. Cool fogger for low lying fog, just like dry ice. You can make a fog chiller yourself by blowing the fog into ice to cool it down. I have a few that I made out of old ice chests for my halloween yard disply. I have ran foggers at all of my events. Enough to fog the dance floor and to create the right enviorment for my lights. I have never set off an alarm except for the time the wing nut slipped and pointed directly at the smoke detector. A band I played in used a smoke machine at a concert in a place that used to be a firehouse and it always set of the alarms. Another note here. All public buildings are non-smoking, so if you showed up with a machine that said smoke you would never be allowed to use it.

Does this not just refer to tobaco smoke? The smoking bans this side of the pond are just that & will not affect the use of foggers, hazers, low fog or dry ice (other than venues with smoke detectors where all types of smoke/fog/haze will set them off if they waft into the detector & remember all smoke will rise, that much is basic physics)
