I wouldn't recommend having more than one pair of lights that are under £100, for that bit extra (£30-50) you can get some better units which will spread the dance floor better.
Having said that, if you only do very small venues, 4 or so £100 effects might do.
If spending the extra money, look at the Acme Winners/Rovers for about £135 these days. - Good lights, great control via DMX, and bright too.

Although I no longer use them, my all time favourite budget lighting has to be MUSHROOMS (http://www.terralec.com/prod.asp?i=18061&1=BLOWSTAR_MUSHROOM_(AC135B)).
You can get them for £50 each, and each light gives out 600 watt light output. A pair of them can fill a room. Very cheap and very good value for money.
Hope it helps!.

:agree: They are very effective, but can be noisy and get very hot (to touch that is) and certainly a good one to start with.

These are my favourite non-DMX light too! I have two of them, still use them on occassion (for small, lazy events).
I think you can even pick them up for £40. TLC Direct :)
