Speakers? - what do you think?

Hi

I am very close to purchasing my speaker set up.
Know all about the pro's/con's of Active's by virtue of
listening to you guys, on here.

I'm looking at playing to private parties, and the smaller venues.
Maybe 75/100 would be an average crowd.

My inclination is for the WHARFEDALE EVP-X12P 12"
300W POWERED SPEAKER (PAIR)

or the WHARFEDALE EVP-X15P 15" 400W POWERED SPEAKER (PAIR)

Can anyone recommend them?
What would be the 'big' difference, sound wise between 300/400W
if I was to buy and use at the above type of venue/crowd.

Any comments about price/functionality would be most welcome.

we dont have that brand over here. I checked them out at thier site and they seem like they are good for what you need them for. I would suggest getting the matching sub for better bottom end. Bass is really important over here. If the clients cant feel the bass hitting them in the chest they get disappointed.

well if im right looking at the pics one set has a 15" bass driver the other a 12" if you couldnt afford a sub with them id go with 15" if you can i find a 15" sub compliments my 12" active mackies quite nicely for what i need them for.

At some stage i would recommend getting a sub, sub frequencies require a lot of amplifier power and therefore reduce the overall level the speakers can produce. I have a pair of DAS 112A active speakers and plan to get a sub at the earliest opportunity but in the venues i have played in (upto 200 people) they have been more than powerful enough (they are 450W).

But the figure you should really be concerned with is maximum peak SPL, which for the DAS 112A is 128dB SPL at 1m. I couldn't find any data on the wharfdales. Basically a speaker can be rated 1000w but be very inefficient. Therefore a 500w speaker might actually be "louder" than a 1000w model because it is more efficient. For active speakers look at the Max peak SPL and for passive speakers sensitivity ( the max peak SPL produced at 1m with a 1w).

Wharfdale isnt a Pro audio make and so wont sound as good as RCF, DAS etc and wont be made as well- but can you afford near double the price of the Wharfdales? We all have to work within budgets. Also generally in small venues i don't use my speaker stands, this increases the bass response but doesn't give such a great throw, in small venues this isn't a problem.

it has been mentioned on here that what lets the active wharfedales down is the amplifier, if i were i would look into a pair of active warrior's, some members on here use them and say they are superb and there roughly the same price as the wharfedales.

wharfedales sound as good as anything out there but whats let them down is build quality. ive got evpx-15's and svp 15's and both are falling apart after less than a year, handles were screwed on with woodchip screws ! missus was well impressed when i took a chunk out of the wall in our front room when it decided to let go ! Im going to try and make an effort to go and listen to the class d's, thinking maybe the twin 12" sub and a pair of 12"tops

A guy I know is a Line dance caller and I heard his Wharfedale 15inch actives.

I thought they were pretty good.

Depending on how much bass you want you might be ok without subs.

Dont know about them falling to bits though!

thats what i was getting at crazy get 15" if you cant afford a sub i used peavey 15" before i managed to afford y sub

i never had any problems with the peaveys but spend most of my time sticking the wharfedales back together ! 2 new faults today, lights on front of evp-x's have stopped working on one cab and corners have come of one of the svp's are coming away.
