Thomann - Plugs

Anyone who's ordered from Thomann - does equipment come with a UK 3 pin plug on it or a European 2 pin.

Was looking to buy a few of the Stairville Moving Heads but while doing my research saw a few websites actively discouraging the use of Thomann because they sell stuff with the European plugs to UK customers, which is allegedly illegal....

Not sure about the illeagal bit, but yes, goods from Thomann do come with a European plug.

90% of those items have an IEC socket and you just replace the lead. On those items that do not have a IEC socket, I cut off the europlug and fit an inline IEC socket.

I don't know if they do or don't. However I wouldn't stress about it as a 13A plug is cheap enough, and the wiring isnt hard.

If it is illegal, it won't affect you, and I would have thought they'd have been hunted down by now.

It depends what you're buying.

All the Stairville (Isolution type) lighting has separate plugs anyway i think, eg: you can just use a normal iec to uk plug.

stuff from thomman does come with a european 2 pin plug ......still a very embarassing subject with me.....

but daz is right the i show i move stuff has separate cables so you can just get new cables with 3 pin plugs etc.

I can't see it being illegal.
The last light I order was a two pin, just switched it over till 3 pin UK and bingo, it worked.

I wonder if the 'illegal' aspect has come about from the fact that all appliances sold in the UK are supposed to have a moulded plug on them..... However, the stuff from Thomann isn't actually being sold in the UK is it? We are choosing to buy from abroad..... which is very different! :)

As far as I'm aware the kit from Germany is all fine and I have never had any problems , but I would not recommend cutting the 2 pin plug off any units and replacing it with a uk style 3 pin plug as this will most likely invalidate the warranty. Snap in converter plugs are readily available , RS Components do them and I have seen them on ebay a time or two.

Haha - totally never thought that it's just a case of swapping the cable, not rewiring the plug. As simple as it would have been, its still effort. Wouldn't have stopped me buying though.

Think thats correct with the illegal aspect. I know Thomann is abroad but they actively sell and distribute to the UK. Think that law was changed recently to include any EU companies that distribute to the UK.

Wouldn't stop me buying - still a very good place to shop, just thought i'd ask about it.

From experience.... Yes, anything from Thomann with a lead will have a europlug on it.
The Stairville heads do not have a moulded lead :D

The law probably would not apply as it for domestic appliances. You notice on most disco gear it says "For professional use only" or similar. This gets round the domestic problem, because it's assumed that someone buying that type of kit will have a resonable knowledge of electrics, enough to wire plugs and not kill themselves anyway:eek:
Disco gear is now in a grey area as it is cheap and easily available to any member of Joe puplic, so that's why some kit has attached leads.
:soapbox: attached leads.... which is why pro gear has detachable.
Pro gear is likely to be 'used' so there is a greater risk of the cable becoming damaged and worn out and will need replacing. So all you do is get another lead. simple!
Of course is much safer if when a fixed cable appliance has a damaged cable, that the owner opens it up, trys to replace the cable with something unsuitable and it potentially becomes unsafe, so much safer than the unit never being tampered with and replacing the cable with another off the shelf one.:rolleyes:
Just proves that these numpties that make up EU regs no nothin about anythin:(
